Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma tachiraense was described by Schultz in 1944 in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (volume 94, no. 3172, p. 288, pl. 7, figs. B–C). The type locality is the Río Táchira, a tributary of the Río Zulia approximately 4 mi north of San Antonio, within the Río Catatumbo system, Táchira state, Venezuela. The species is named for Táchira state, the Venezuelan state in which the type locality falls.
An early synonym, Chaetostoma tachiraensis, represents a gender-inflected variant of the specific epithet and is no longer in common use; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Chaetostoma tachiraense as the valid combination. The species has no assigned L-number or LDA code and no established English common name.
Schultz described two Chaetostoma species from the Lake Maracaibo drainage in the same 1944 publication; the other was C. sovichthys. Historical confusion between the two has been documented — a PlanetCatfish image (image ID 21972) from Galvis et al. (1997) originally labelled as C. tachiraense may in fact have depicted C. sovichthys, underscoring the difficulty of separating these morphologically similar highland species from the same drainage. Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae.
Morphology
FishBase and PlanetCatfish both record a maximum size of 3.5 in (3.5 in) SL — a modestly sized Chaetostoma, smaller than many of its congeners. The body is strongly depressed and flattened ventrally, with the broad sucker disc mouth adapted for adhesion to hard substrates in swift current. Like all Chaetostoma, the abdomen is unplated, and the snout lacks the full plate armour present in many other loricariids.
Interopercular odontodes — the bristle-like spines projecting from behind the gill cover — are present and more developed in adult males. The genus is distinguished from Ancistrus primarily by the absence of fleshy, branched snout tentacles; Chaetostoma males bear the interopercular odontodes but not the rostral tentacle fan characteristic of Ancistrus. Coloration is typical of the genus: brownish to olive with variable pale spotting or reticulation dorsally, paler ventrally.
Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern consistent across Chaetostoma: males have a proportionally broader and more robust head, slimmer ventral sides, and enlarged pelvic fins. The enlarged pelvic fins are functionally associated with spawning behaviour in current — the male uses them to cover the egg clutch while braced against the substrate in fast water.
Habitat
Chaetostoma tachiraense is restricted to the Catatumbo River basin, within the Lake Maracaibo drainage of Táchira state, Venezuela. The IUCN assessment (2021) and field data confirm the species occurs at elevations of 1,000–2,0 ft — a montane specialist confined to the fast, cold, well-oxygenated tributary streams of the Andes foothills draining into the Catatumbo system.
At these altitudes, stream temperatures are substantially cooler than lowland Venezuelan rivers. The substrate in such habitats is typically rocky and boulder-strewn, with strong current and high dissolved oxygen. Chaetostoma species are physiologically adapted to these lotic, oxygen-rich conditions and are poorly suited to warm, still water. The very restricted geographic range — a single river basin at high elevation — is the primary factor underlying the species' Vulnerable status: any disturbance to the Catatumbo highland headwaters affects essentially all known habitat for this fish.
The Catatumbo basin is shared between Venezuela and Colombia, though the type locality is in Venezuelan Táchira. Broader basin-level threats include deforestation on the Andean slopes feeding the headwaters, sedimentation from agricultural activities, and altered hydrology.
Feeding
Chaetostoma tachiraense is a periphyton grazer, feeding on the thin films of algae, diatoms, and associated organic matter that colonise submerged rock surfaces in fast-flowing montane streams. This dietary strategy is shared across the genus and is reflected in the broad, transversely arranged dentition adapted for scraping rather than biting into plant tissue or wood.
In captivity, the diet should be algae-centred: quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched nori provide the bulk of nutrition. Natural algae growth on rocks and glass in the aquarium serves as a continuous supplementary grazing surface. Blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) and cucumber are accepted. The species is not a wood-eater; driftwood is not required as a food source, though it may graze biofilm from any hard surface. As with other highland Chaetostoma, overfeeding with protein-rich foods is not recommended.
Mating
Breeding biology in C. tachiraense has not been specifically documented in the literature available from cache data, but the genus-level pattern is consistent across Chaetostoma and almost certainly applies. Males establish and defend preferred spawning sites — typically the underside of a flat rock or a crevice formed between boulders — and display to females using the interopercular odontodes as a secondary sexual signal.
The male's enlarged pelvic fins are understood to serve a functional role during spawning: in fast-current environments where eggs are deposited on exposed rock undersides rather than within enclosed caves, the male braces himself against the substrate and uses the pelvic fins to cover and protect the egg mass after fertilisation. Rival males are repelled through lateral threat displays and, if necessary, physical contact.
Breeding
Chaetostoma spawns on the underside of flat objects in moving water — a spawning strategy distinct from the cave-spawning of many other pleco genera and well-adapted to the boulder-strewn, fast-flowing streams of the montane Andes. The adhesive egg clutch is deposited upside-down on the underside of a flat rock, and the male remains with the clutch, guarding it and fanning with his fins to maintain oxygenation.
Capt breeding of C. tachiraense is not documented in the data available, likely reflecting its rarity in the trade. For any Chaetostoma from highland habitats, the key aquarium triggers are cooler water temperatures, strong current, high dissolved oxygen, and a rocky habitat with flat overhanging stones. Regular partial water changes and a varied algae-rich diet support conditioning. Given the species' conservation status, any successful captive breeding would be especially valuable and worth documenting.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma tachiraense is rare in the aquarium trade — it carries no L-number and has no established common name, making it primarily of interest to Chaetostoma specialists and advanced catfish hobbyists. Its montane origin imposes a specific water temperature requirement that sets it apart from many more commonly kept tropical plecos: the species is adapted to the cooler streams of the Venezuelan Andes at 1,000–2,0 ft, and tank temperatures should be kept at the lower end of the tropical range, ideally 64–75 °F. Warmer conditions reduce dissolved oxygen and cause chronic stress for a high-altitude species.
The tank should be set up with a strong current and high oxygen, using powerheads or a vigorous filter return directed across a rocky substrate. Stacked boulders creating caves, flat overhanging rocks, and minimal fine substrate best replicate the natural riverbed. Gravel or sand between the stones is acceptable, but open sandy zones with no current hold no attraction for this species.
At 3.5 in SL, C. tachiraense is a compact fish; a tank of 20–25 US gal with the described furnishings is adequate for a pair or small group. Water should be soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, with excellent water quality maintained through regular partial changes. The species is peaceful toward other fish but can be territorial with conspecifics competing for rock sites; providing multiple caves and crevices reduces aggression. Compatible tankmates are cold-tolerant community fish — small tetras, danios, and livebearers that tolerate the cooler temperature range.
Conservation
Chaetostoma tachiraense is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed 15 January 2021 (IUCN Red List, species ID 49830742). The criterion reflects a restricted area of occupancy — essentially the Catatumbo River headwaters in Venezuelan Táchira — combined with observed or inferred continuing decline in habitat quality. The specific sub-criterion (iii) points to degradation of habitat extent and quality as the driving factor.
The Catatumbo highland tributaries face multiple pressures. Deforestation of the Andean slopes feeding the headwaters increases sedimentation and alters stream hydrology. Agricultural expansion in the Táchira highlands introduces runoff that degrades water quality in the same fast-flowing streams the species depends on. The Lake Maracaibo drainage has historically suffered significant environmental stress — petroleum extraction infrastructure, agricultural development, and urbanisation in the broader basin all contribute to cumulative degradation.
The species' combination of high-altitude restriction, a single river-basin range, and specialisation for fast, cold, well-oxygenated stream habitat makes it inherently vulnerable to any changes affecting the Catatumbo headwaters. No captive breeding population is known to provide insurance against further wild population decline. Conservation of the Táchira highland riparian corridors — the stream margins and forested catchments feeding these rivers — is the most relevant management action for this species.
