Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma venezuelae was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 in Zoologica: Scientific Contributions of the New York Zoological Society (volume 29, part 1, number 5, p. 41, plate 1, figs. 1–3; fig. 2), from specimens collected at Río Caripe, Caripito, Venezuela. It was originally placed in the genus Corymbophanes; the combination Corymbophanes venezuelae is its sole synonym. FishBase (identifier 50232) and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) both recognise Chaetostoma venezuelae (Schultz, 1944) as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Corymbophanes to Chaetostoma.
Chaetostoma belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. Genus-level characters include evertible interopercular odontodes, the absence of abdominal plates, and the absence of plate rows along the snout margin — features that separate Chaetostoma from Ancistrus, which carries fleshy rostral tentacles absent in Chaetostoma and its allies.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in (SL), placing C. venezuelae among the smaller members of the genus. The body plan follows the typical Chaetostoma template: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with keeled bony scutes in longitudinal rows, and equipped with a broad, depressed head bearing a ventral mouth fringed with papillae and rows of fine, bristle-like teeth suited for scraping biofilm from hard substrates.
Sexual dimorphism in Chaetostoma is consistent across the genus: mature males develop a broader, heavier head and a noticeably slimmer ventral profile than females, and the pelvic fins of breeding males are disproportionately enlarged — thought to function as a shield over the adhesive egg clutch during fertilisation in fast current. No species-specific morphological descriptions beyond the original 1944 account are available in the sources consulted.
Habitat
The type locality of Chaetostoma venezuelae is the Río Caripe at Caripito, a small town in Monagas state, eastern Venezuela. Caripito lies within the drainage of the Río San Juan, a Caribbean-slope river that discharges to the Gulf of Paria. The San Juan system drains the eastern flank of the coastal range and the foothills of the Interior Range, carrying water from relatively modest elevations compared to Andean-foothill Chaetostoma.
No field-recorded water-chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) for this species were found in the sources consulted. Rocky, fast-flowing stream conditions are inferred from the genus's rheophilic ecology; Chaetostoma species broadly inhabit high-oxygen riffle and cascade zones over exposed bedrock or boulders. The 2021 IUCN assessment cites insufficient distributional data as the basis for the Data Deficient rating, indicating that the species has not been surveyed beyond the immediate type locality area.
Feeding
Chaetostoma venezuelae is presumed to be an algal biofilm scraper in the manner typical of the genus. The fine, bristle-like (chaetose) teeth of Chaetostoma are adapted for rasping the thin periphytic mat — diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated organic matter — from rocky surfaces in fast-flowing water. No dietary observations specific to this species appear in the literature or trade sources consulted.
In the aquarium, if the species were kept, a diet centred on algae — spirulina wafers, algae tablets, and naturally grown biofilm on rocks and glass — would be appropriate, supplemented with blanched vegetables. Driftwood is not a dietary requirement for Chaetostoma.
Mating
No mating observations for Chaetostoma venezuelae are recorded in any source consulted. Genus-level accounts describe male territory establishment over rocky surfaces or shallow cavities in fast-flowing water, with males displaying enlarged interopercular odontodes and oversized pelvic fins during the breeding season. The functional hypothesis for the enlarged pelvic fins — shielding the fertilisation site from current wash-out — is well supported by analogy across rheophilic loricariids. Species-specific mating behaviour for C. venezuelae remains undocumented.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Chaetostoma venezuelae are known. PlanetCatfish lists zero registered keepers and zero breeding reports as of the date the cache was collected. Based on Chaetostoma genus biology, the species is presumed to deposit adhesive eggs on the underside of a flat object — a broad stone or slate — in shallow fast water, with the male brooding inverted over the clutch. In the aquarium
Chaetostoma venezuelae has no documented presence in the aquarium hobby. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers, no wild-caught spotters, and no photographs as of the cache date. The species does not appear to have entered the ornamental trade, and no care data from practised hobbyists exist.
Should specimens become available, the husbandry principles that apply to other small rheophilic Chaetostoma would be a reasonable starting point: high dissolved oxygen, vigorous water movement replicating a rocky stream, a temperature range appropriate to the species' latitude and elevation (data sparse for this taxon specifically), and an aquascape of smooth stones and boulders offering both grazing surfaces and shelter. Water chemistry parameters cannot be stated with confidence in the absence of field measurements.

Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma venezuelae as Data Deficient (DD), with an assessment dated 15 January 2021. The DD designation reflects insufficient information on the species' distribution and population status to permit a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — not a conclusion that the species is secure, but an acknowledgment that the evidence base is too thin to categorise it.
The type locality at Río Caripe, Caripito, is in Monagas state, eastern Venezuela — a region subject to petroleum industry activity, agricultural conversion, and associated water-quality pressures. Whether C. venezuelae persists at its type locality, or occurs more broadly in the San Juan drainage, is unknown. The species is essentially a taxonomic entry with a locality pin and an 80-year-old description; meaningful conservation assessment awaits field surveys.
