Taxonomy & naming
Crossoloricaria cephalaspis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Iman Isbrücker in 1979. The type locality lies within the Río Magdalena basin of Colombia, though the exact collection site coordinates span a range of possibilities within the basin, reflecting some uncertainty in the original locality data (cited in PlanetCatfish as multiple coordinate options spanning approximately 5°–11°N, 74°–75°W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Crossoloricaria cephalaspis Isbrücker, 1979 as the valid combination.
Crossloricaria is a small genus of Loricariinae with only approximately three currently recognised valid species, all confined to western or northern South America. The genus name Crossoloricaria combines the Greek krossoi (fringe or tassel) with the Latin lorica (cuirass or leather corslet), with the compound alluding to the structural character of the genus's armour — specifically, features of the keeled scute arrangement along the flanks. The species epithet cephalaspis derives from the Greek kephalē (head) and aspis (shield or buckler), together meaning 'head-shielded' or 'with a shield on the head', in reference to the large, broad, shield-like bony plating that covers the dorsal surface of the head in this genus.
Morphology
Adults of C. cephalaspis reach a maximum of approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL), making this a small loricariid even by whiptail standards. The body is strongly depressed and elongate in the characteristic Loricariinae fashion, with a broad, flat head covered by an extensive plate of fused or closely interlocking scutes — the shield-like structure referenced in the species epithet. Habitat

Crossoloricaria cephalaspis is a rare fish in the hobby and few specific husbandry records exist. Its small adult size (under 4.5 in SL) makes it physically suitable for a relatively modest aquarium — a tank of 20 US gal or more with a small footprint — but its origin in the flowing waters of the Magdalena basin suggests that water quality and oxygenation are important variables.
The single temperature data point (approximately 73 °F) implies a preference for cooler conditions than most Amazonian loricariids; a range of roughly 68–75 °F is a reasonable working estimate. Water should be well-oxygenated and clean, with efficient filtration and regular partial water changes. Conservation

Nonetheless, the Magdalena basin is one of Colombia's most heavily impacted river systems. Extensive deforestation, agricultural runoff, urban and industrial water pollution (particularly in the mid and lower basin near Bogotá and Medellín), large-scale gold and coal mining activities, and a long history of hydroelectric development have substantially altered habitats throughout the basin. For an endemic species of limited range, the cumulative effect of these pressures represents an ongoing background risk.
