Taxonomy & naming
Crossoloricaria venezuelae was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 from material collected in the Lake Maracaibo drainage of Venezuela. It is the type species of the genus Crossoloricaria, and its placement is treated as stable in both the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase, where it is listed under the valid combination Crossoloricaria venezuelae (Schultz, 1944).
The species belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, the whiptail and twig-catfish lineage within the armoured-catfish family Loricariidae. Members of this subfamily are distinguished by their depressed, elongate bodies and long, slender caudal peduncles. As the genus type, C. venezuelae anchors the concept of Crossoloricaria, a small assemblage of benthic, sand-associated whiptails.
Morphology
Crossoloricaria venezuelae reaches about 7 in standard length, a moderate size for a whiptail loricariine. The body conforms to the Loricariinae plan: dorsoventrally flattened, armoured with rows of bony plates, and tapering to a long, thin caudal peduncle. This flattened build suits a life spent in close contact with the substrate.
Detailed published descriptions of fin counts, plate arrangement, and colour pattern for this species are not readily available in the sources consulted. No data on sexual dimorphism has been published in the references reviewed here.
Habitat

General requirements can be inferred from its biology: a soft sand bed for sifting and burrowing, clean well-oxygenated water, and tropical temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C (matching the recorded 72–79 °F range). As a benthic sand specialist it would need open substrate rather than a wood-and-rock biotope.
