Taxonomy & naming
Cordylancistrus tayrona was formally described by Provenzano, Milani, and Ardila Rodríguez in 2017 in Zootaxa (volume 4294, number 5, pages 522–530), from type specimens collected in the Badillo River, a tributary of the Cesar River north of Valledupar in Departamento Cesar, Colombia — within the Magdalena River basin on the northern flank of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 75083) registers the valid name as Cordylancistrus tayrona Provenzano, Milani & Ardila Rodríguez, 2017. No L-number or LDA code has been assigned.
The genus Cordylancistrus takes its name from the Greek kordyle (club or swelling) and agkistron (hook), a reference to the wide, robust head typical of the group. The specific epithet tayrona honours the Tayrona, the pre-Columbian indigenous culture of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta whose descendants still inhabit the region; the name is used as a noun in apposition. Cordylancistrus currently comprises seven species, and C. tayrona is distinguished within the genus by a unique fleshy dark excrescence over the posterior tip of the supraoccipital, a character not seen in its congeners.
Morphology
The holotype of C. tayrona reaches 4.5 in total length (TL) — a modest size for the family. The body follows the standard loricariid bauplan: strongly depressed, fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral sucking disc formed by the fleshy lips. The most diagnostic external feature is the fleshy black or dark brown keel or excrescence projecting from the posterior tip of the supraoccipital — unique among described Cordylancistrus species. Additional diagnostic characters include a strip of very small plate-granules and odontodes along the snout border, elongated movable cheek odontodes that reach or approach the origin of the pectoral fin, and pectoral-fin spines that, when adpressed, almost reach or slightly surpass the midpoint of the pelvic-fin spine. The dorsal fin carries 8–9 soft rays; the anal fin carries 3 soft rays. Both an adipose fin and an anal fin are present, a combination variable across loricariid lineages.
No published data on coloration in life are available beyond what can be inferred from holotype photographs. Detailed size data beyond maximum TL are not yet in the literature for this species.
Habitat
Field data associated with the type locality and the original description indicate that C. tayrona inhabits piedmont rivers of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — clear, transparent streams and rivers with strong to moderate current. The substrate at collection sites is composed of rocks, small stones, and sand. Aquatic vegetation is sparse, a consequence of the dense forest canopy shading these narrow montane watercourses. Water temperature at collection sites falls in the range of 64–75 °F, reflecting the elevational influence of the Sierra Nevada. The species is distributed across Caribbean-draining systems from the Magdalena basin — including the lower Magdalena and Cesar tributaries — east to the Ranchería drainage.
The combination of clear, well-oxygenated, cool piedmont water, rocky substrate, and strong current suggests a rheophilic microhabitat preference typical of many Hypostominae.
Feeding
No published diet data exist specifically for C. tayrona. Given its loricariid morphology — a ventral sucking disc, fine odontodes on the snout, and the general Cordylancistrus body plan — biofilm and aufwuchs grazing on rock surfaces is the likely primary feeding mode in the wild, consistent with the rocky, fast-water habitat described at type locality sites. The genus Cordylancistrus is not a documented wood-eater in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque; it is placed in a lineage of rock-associated, current-adapted loricariids.
In the absence of aquarium records, husbandry practice for analogous rheophilic Hypostominae applies: high-quality sinking wafers with significant algae or spirulina content, supplemented with blanched vegetables and occasional invertebrate protein.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented for C. tayrona in the wild or in captivity. The species was only described in 2017 and is not known to be established among aquarists at the time of writing. General loricariid reproductive biology suggests males would hold and defend cavity or crevice sites, with courtship involving odontode display, but this remains unconfirmed for the genus Cordylancistrus specifically.
Breeding
No breeding records exist for Cordylancistrus tayrona in captivity or detailed reproductive data from field collections. PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers and no breeding reports. The species is currently known almost exclusively from the type series and the original taxonomic description. Until specimens enter and establish themselves in the hobby, captive reproductive biology will remain undocumented.
In the aquarium
Cordylancistrus tayrona has not established itself in the aquarium hobby and is essentially unknown in the trade. No husbandry data have been published and no PlanetCatfish keeper records exist. The original description photographs are of holotype specimens; no live aquarium photographs are on record.
Based on habitat data from the type locality, any future keeper would need to provide cool, clean, highly oxygenated water with strong flow — conditions consistent with the piedmont rivers of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (temperature 64–75 °F, transparent water, rocky substrate). Heavy filtration with significant water movement and regular partial water changes would be essential. Rocky cave or crevice hiding places should be provided. Dietary needs would likely follow the pattern of other rock-associated Hypostominae: algae wafers, biofilm-supplemented sinking foods, and blanched vegetables.
Given the species' recent description, restricted natural range, and unknown conservation status, responsible sourcing would require verification that any specimens are legally and sustainably collected.
Conservation
Cordylancistrus tayrona has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is therefore Not Evaluated. The species has a geographically restricted distribution across Caribbean-draining river systems of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — a montane massif under substantial pressure from agricultural land clearance, deforestation for coffee and banana cultivation, and water extraction from piedmont rivers. Its apparent endemism to a limited suite of drainages in a heavily modified landscape warrants future assessment. No population size estimates or trend data are available.
