Taxonomy & naming
Curculionichthys karipuna was described by Silva, Roxo, Melo & Oliveira in 2016 in Zootaxa (volume 4175, number 3, pages 281–291), as a new species of Curculionichthys from the eastern Guiana Shield of northern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists C. karipuna as a valid species within Loricariidae, subfamily Hypoptopomatinae. It carries no L-number and has not been formally registered in the ornamental trade.
The genus Curculionichthys is a small hypoptopomatine clade of rheophilic dwarf catfishes; the genus name combines the Latin curculio (weevil or grain-beetle) with the Greek ichthys (fish), likely alluding to the downward-pointing, snout-like anterior head profile. The species epithet karipuna honours the Karipuna indigenous people (also rendered Caripuna), who inhabit the Rio Oiapoque region of northern Amapá and Pará states — the general cultural landscape of the type area, even though the collecting localities themselves lie in the Cassiporé and Jari drainages rather than the Oiapoque.
Morphology
At a maximum recorded size of 1 in SL, C. karipuna is among the most diminutive loricariids formally described. The body plan follows the hypoptopomatine pattern: dorsoventrally compressed, with a ventral suckermouth, bony scutes covering most of the body, and a pointed anterior snout profile — the last being explicitly cited as a diagnostic character for the species.
Key morphological characters separating C. karipuna from its congeners include: an irregular concentration of chromatophores covering the origin of the anal fin and the distal portion of the first unbranched anal-fin ray; absence of the dark-brown body spots seen in some relatives; absence of contrasting dark anterodorsal spots; papillae randomly (rather than regularly) distributed on the lower lip; small, inconspicuous odontodes arranged in rows on the head and trunk; a higher premaxillary and dentary tooth count than most congeners; a lower vertebral count; a higher lateral abdominal plate count; and the absence of an unpaired dorsal caudal-peduncle platelet. No sexual dimorphism is documented.
Habitat
Curculionichthys karipuna is known from two distinct drainage systems in northern Amapá state, Brazil, on the eastern edge of the Guiana Shield. The primary locality is the Rio Cassiporé, an Atlantic coastal river that drains independently to the sea; the second is an unnamed affluent of the Rio Jari, which is itself a major left-bank tributary of the Amazon.
The two collection environments differed in character. Rio Cassiporé sites were shallow, fast-flowing streams with large exposed rocks — typical rocky-riffle Guiana Shield habitat. The Rio Jari site reached approximately 3 ft depth, and C. karipuna was found among aquatic roots growing from the bank, mixed with marginal vegetation. Both habitats share the fast, well-oxygenated water that characterises most Curculionichthys collection localities. No water-chemistry data are recorded for the specific collection sites.
Feeding
Curculionichthys karipuna is an algae and biofilm grazer, consistent with all Hypoptopomatinae. The ventral suckermouth and rasping dentition are adapted for harvesting periphyton — the community of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and associated fine detritus — from rock surfaces, submerged roots, and woody debris in fast-flowing streams.
No aquarium feeding records exist for this species. Given its tiny size and rheophilic habits, it would presumably require fine, easily rasped algae-based foods (spirulina wafers, soft algae growth, fine aufwuchs) in captivity. Providing strong water movement over textured surfaces to encourage biofilm growth would likely be important.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Curculionichthys karipuna. The species is absent from the aquarium hobby, and field observations of reproductive behaviour have not been published. General patterns in small hypoptopomatines involve site fidelity to sheltered microhabitats during spawning, but nothing specific to this species or genus is on record.
Breeding
No breeding data are available for Curculionichthys karipuna. As with virtually all members of this genus, the species is not maintained in captivity and no reproductive accounts exist. The broader loricariid pattern of adhesive egg deposition on sheltered substrates is the baseline assumption, but clutch size, parental roles, and incubation period remain undescribed.
In the aquarium
Curculionichthys karipuna is not available in the aquarium trade and is extremely unlikely to be encountered outside scientific collections. Its diminutive size (under 1 in SL) and rheophilic Guiana Shield origin would demand specific conditions: clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water; smooth and rough rocks with well-developed biofilm; minimal organic waste; and appropriately tropical temperatures consistent with northern Amapá lowlands.
The tiny body size makes this species particularly vulnerable to water quality lapses and to competition from larger tankmates. Any husbandry guidance beyond these basic habitat inferences would be speculative, as no captive observations are on record.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Curculionichthys karipuna as Least Concern (LC) in September 2020. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across two separate drainage systems (Cassiporé and Jari) and no evidence of significant population decline at the time of evaluation.
Amapá state remains one of Brazil's most intact forested regions, and the rivers of the eastern Guiana Shield are comparatively less impacted than many southern Brazilian drainages. However, C. karipuna's tiny known range, micro-endemic habits, and dependence on clear fast-water streams make it potentially sensitive to any sedimentation, deforestation of riparian zones, or hydrological modification within its two known drainages. It receives no protection through the ornamental trade and has no captive population.
