Taxonomy & naming
Curculionichthys oliveirai was originally described as Hisonotus oliveirai by Roxo, Zawadzki and Troy in 2014, in a paper treating small hypoptopomatine loricariids from the upper Paraná basin. The following year Roxo and colleagues erected the new genus Curculionichthys to accommodate a cluster of small otothyrine-like plecos distinguished by a constellation of characters absent in Hisonotus sensu stricto, and the species was simultaneously transferred to that genus; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Curculionichthys oliveirai (Roxo, Zawadzki & Troy, 2014).
The genus name is a compound: Latin curculionem, meaning 'elongated snout' or 'weevil' (alluding to the distinctively projecting rostrum), combined with Greek ichthys, 'fish'. The specific epithet oliveirai honours Professor Claudio Oliveira of UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, São Paulo), a leading authority on Neotropical freshwater fishes. The species has no widely used common name in the hobby and carries no L-number or CW-code designation.
Within the family Loricariidae, C. oliveirai is placed in the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the smaller, stream-dwelling armoured catfishes of South America. The original description was published in ZooKeys 534: 103–134 (2015) under the genus-erection paper (Ref. 113800 on FishBase).
Morphology
Adults are tiny, with females reaching approximately 1 in SL and males slightly smaller at around 1 in SL — placing C. oliveirai among the most diminutive loricariids known. Weight has been recorded at roughly 0.67 g. The body is elongated in proportion, with the characteristic loricariid armour of overlapping bony scutes covering head and trunk.
The most diagnostic external features, per the original description, are the pair of rostral plates at the tip of the snout, the longitudinally aligned rows of odontodes on the head and trunk, a functional V-shaped spinelet, and small, inconspicuous odontodes that do not form conspicuous brush-like tufts. The head is moderately deep relative to head length (head depth 51.6–59.2% HL). Tooth counts are 11–18 premaxillary teeth and 11–15 dentary teeth; the teeth themselves are slender and bicuspid.
The dorsal fin has 9 soft rays and the anal fin 6 soft rays; vertebral count is 27. Ground coloration from preserved specimens is typical of the genus — pale to brownish with darker mottling, though live coloration in stream-dwelling individuals has not been documented in the literature available here.
Habitat
Curculionichthys oliveirai is known from tributaries of the rio Ivaí in the upper rio Paraná basin, Paraná State, Brazil. Confirmed collection localities include ribeirão Salto Grande, ribeirão Keller, rio Mourão, and ribeirão Cambira. The type locality is ribeirão Cambira at the boundary between the municipalities of Cambira and Apucarana, at approximately 23°38'54"S, 51°29'58"W.
These streams are small to medium-sized tributaries flowing through the interior of Paraná State — a landscape that has experienced intensive agricultural conversion, making undisturbed riparian habitat increasingly patchy. Specific physico-chemical data (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen) from collection events are not available in the sources consulted. As a hypoptopomatine, the species is expected to occupy shallow, fast-flowing reaches with hard substrate — rock, gravel, and submerged organic matter — where biofilm and periphyton accumulate on surfaces available for grazing.
Feeding
Curculionichthys oliveirai is a micro-algae and biofilm grazer, as expected from its hypoptopomatine placement and its low trophic level value of 2.4 (±0.1) recorded on FishBase — consistent with periphyton feeding rather than predation or detritivory. The elongated snout, which gives the genus its name, likely facilitates reaching into crevices and over irregular substrate surfaces to crop epilithic algae and the associated microorganism films.
No specific gut-content analyses are available for this species in the sources consulted. General hypoptopomatine biology suggests primary reliance on algae, diatoms, and associated detritus scraped from hard surfaces in flowing water.
Mating
No behavioural observations of courtship or mating have been published or reported in captivity for Curculionichthys oliveirai. The species has not been recorded in the aquarium hobby, and no breeding account exists in the sources consulted. The original description does not document sexual dimorphism beyond the minor size difference between the sexes (females slightly larger).
By analogy with other small hypoptopomatines, cave or crevice spawning with some degree of male territorial behaviour is plausible, but this remains speculative in the absence of direct observation.

No captive breeding of Curculionichthys oliveirai has been reported. The species is not established in the aquarium trade, and no wild reproductive data are available in the literature consulted. Resilience metrics on FishBase classify it as high resilience (minimum population doubling time under 15 months), suggesting rapid turnover typical of small, r-selected stream fishes, but the specific reproductive parameters underlying that estimate are not detailed in the available sources.
In the aquarium
Curculionichthys oliveirai is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade. No import records, husbandry guides, or keeper accounts are known from the sources consulted. Its tiny adult size (under 1 in SL) would theoretically make it manageable in a small, well-filtered stream-biotope aquarium with smooth rock surfaces, strong oxygenation, and a mature biofilm, but these conditions have not been tested against this species in captivity.
Given the intensive agricultural pressures on Paraná State streams, wild collection presents additional conservation concerns. Hobbyists with a specialist interest in micro-loricariids should treat any encounters with this species with care and prioritise documenting water parameters and behaviour if the fish is ever obtained.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Curculionichthys oliveirai as Least Concern in November 2018, on the basis of its occurrence across multiple tributaries of the rio Ivaí and no evidence of precipitous population decline at the time of assessment.
However, the upper rio Paraná basin in Paraná State is one of the most heavily modified freshwater landscapes in Brazil — dominated by intensive soy and sugarcane agriculture, with significant loss of riparian vegetation, increased sedimentation, and agrochemical runoff that can collapse the epilithic algal communities on which micro-grazers like this species depend. The restricted endemic range (rio Ivaí tributaries only, as currently known) means that localised habitat degradation could have a disproportionate effect. The species warrants monitoring as agricultural intensification in the region continues.
