Taxonomy & naming
Curculionichthys piracanjuba was originally described by Martins and Langeani in 2012 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 23, number 1, page 30, Figures 1 and 2a) under the name Hisonotus piracanjuba, from type specimens collected in an unnamed stream tributary of the Rio Piracanjuba at the GO-213 road crossing near Morrelândia, Goiás State, Brazil. In 2012, Martins and Langeani also erected the new genus Curculionichthys to accommodate a group of Hisonotus-like hypoptopomatines with a relatively elongated snout, and C. piracanjuba was among the species transferred to this new genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Curculionichthys piracanjuba (Martins & Langeani, 2012) as the valid name; Hisonotus piracanjuba is now treated as a synonym.
The genus name Curculionichthys is formed from the Latin curculionem (a weevil, with reference to an elongated snout) and the Greek ichthys (fish), describing the relatively prominent snout that distinguishes species of this genus within the Hypoptopomatinae. The species epithet piracanjuba is derived from the Tupi words pirá (fish) and canjuba (yellow), the name of the rio Piracanjuba — the river in whose tributary the type locality lies — and is thus a toponym rather than a description of the fish's appearance.
Morphology
Curculionichthys piracanjuba is a tiny loricariid, reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (reference 106073). The body bears the full armour of overlapping bony scutes characteristic of the Hypoptopomatinae, covering the dorsal and lateral surfaces and giving a rigid, tank-like profile disproportionate to its small size. The ventral surface is unplated, as in other hypoptopomatines.
The snout is relatively elongated compared to closely related genera such as Otocinclus, a character that is diagnostic for Curculionichthys. The mouth is disc-shaped and ventrally positioned, adapted for adhering to hard surfaces and rasping fine algal films. Like all hypoptopomatines, the species lacks an adipose fin — a character that helps separate the subfamily from the related Parotocinclinae and from Parotocinclus, which retains an adipose fin.
Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised for this species.
Habitat
The type locality of Curculionichthys piracanjuba is a small unnamed stream tributary of the rio Piracanjuba, at the GO-213 road crossing near Morrelândia County, Goiás State, Brazil, at coordinates approximately 17°43'23"S, 48°57'47"W. This site lies within the Rio Paranaíba basin, which forms the upper portion of the Rio Paraná system — part of the greater La Plata drainage.
The Cerrado biome of central Goiás produces clear, well-oxygenated upland streams with sandy or rocky substrates and moderate current. Stream water in this region is typically soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm through most of the year. These small Cerrado tributaries support a specialised fish fauna, with many species of limited range.
Like other hypoptopomatines, C. piracanjuba is a demersal, benthic species closely associated with hard surfaces — rock, submerged wood, and solid detritus — on which algal biofilm develops.
Feeding
Curculionichthys piracanjuba is an algae and biofilm grazer, with a trophic level of approximately 2.5. The disc-like ventral mouth with its rasping dentition is suited to scraping aufwuchs — the community of algae, bacteria, diatoms, and fine organic matter that accumulates on submerged hard surfaces — from rocks and wood in shallow, well-lit stream sections.
In the aquarium, the species should be maintained with access to mature surfaces carrying natural biofilm growth, supplemented by algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables. Given its tiny size, fine particle size and thin wafer foods are appropriate. As with other diminutive hypoptopomatines, competition for food with larger, more aggressive tankmates should be avoided.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour for Curculionichthys piracanjuba have not been documented. By analogy with other small hypoptopomatines such as Otocinclus species — which share a similar body plan and ecological niche — males likely engage in active pursuit and chasing of females during the breeding season. Females in breeding condition may be noticeably plumper when viewed from above, owing to developing eggs.
The very small size of the species means that a well-planted, mature aquarium with abundant biofilm growth would be the most appropriate environment for conditioning.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Curculionichthys piracanjuba has not been reported in the aquarium literature. Given its rarity in trade and restricted natural distribution, it has not been the subject of systematic husbandry documentation.
The reproductive biology of closely related hypoptopomatines suggests that the species likely deposits adhesive eggs on hard surfaces such as plant leaves or aquarium glass, as seen in Otocinclus species — but this remains unconfirmed for C. piracanjuba. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and larval development are not available.
In the aquarium
Curculionichthys piracanjuba is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, reflecting both its very restricted natural range and the fact that it was only scientifically named in 2012. It would be of primary interest to specialist catfish keepers and researchers.
Its tiny size — under 1 in SL — means that small, well-established aquaria with abundant biofilm and fine sinking foods are most appropriate. A tank with mature hard surfaces (flat smooth stones, driftwood, broad-leaved plants), gentle filtration, and stable, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at 72–79 °F would approximate its Cerrado stream habitat. It should not be kept with large or boisterous fish that would outcompete it for food or disturb its substrate grazing.
Because this species has not been captive-bred, any specimens that enter trade would be wild-caught from a geographically restricted population, and restraint in collection is warranted.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Curculionichthys piracanjuba as Least Concern in November 2018, based on the absence of evidence of major population decline. However, the species is known only from the Rio Paranaíba basin in Goiás State, and its range appears restricted to a small area of Cerrado streams.
The Brazilian Cerrado is one of the world's most threatened biomes, with extensive conversion of natural vegetation to soya and cattle production having eliminated or degraded a large proportion of small stream habitats. Stream channelisation, sedimentation from exposed agricultural soils, and reduced riparian cover are ongoing pressures on the fish fauna of small Cerrado tributaries. While the Least Concern listing reflects current data, the restricted range of C. piracanjuba warrants attention as landscape change continues in the upper Paraná basin.
