Taxonomy & naming
Curculionichthys sabaji was formally described by Roxo, Silva, Ochoa and Oliveira in 2015, published in ZooKeys 534: 103–134 (doi: 10.3897/zookeys.534.6169, 11 November 2015), as one of three new species erected alongside the new genus Curculionichthys within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae (historically also referred to as Otothyrinae in some classifications; FishBase places Curculionichthys in Hypoptopomatinae). The holotype measures 1 in SL and was collected from the Rio Xingu in Altamira, Pará State, Brazil.
The genus name Curculionichthys combines the Latin curculionem — referring to an elongated snout — with the Greek ichthys (fish), together describing the relatively elongated rostral profile that characterises the genus. The species epithet sabaji honours Dr. Mark Henry Sabaj Pérez (b. 1969), ichthyologist and collection manager at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, recognised for his extensive contributions to the study of Neotropical fishes and particularly for his role coordinating the iXingu Project, a collaborative biodiversity survey of the Rio Xingu basin.
It is worth noting that a separate species — Peckoltia sabaji (Jones & Majewski, 2007) — carries the same patronym for the same individual. That pleco is a larger, commercially traded member of the Ancistrinae described two years after Dr. Sabaj's work became widely known; the two sabaji epithets are taxonomically unrelated.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Curculionichthys sabaji Roxo, Silva, Ochoa & Oliveira, 2015 as the valid name. FishBase speccode is 68119.
Morphology
Curculionichthys sabaji is a microform: the maximum standard length recorded is 1 in (1 in SL), making it one of the smallest loricariids known. The holotype measured 1 in SL. The body is elongated and slender for a hypoptopomatine, covered in scutes bearing small, inconspicuous odontodes arranged in longitudinally aligned rows on the head and trunk. The anterior profile of the head is distinctly pointed.
Key morphometric characters from the original description: dorsal fin spine length 18.5–22.7% SL; pectoral fin spine 18.9–23.4% SL; head length 34.3–38.6% SL; snout length 45.5–56.9% HL; caudal peduncle depth 7.0–10.0% SL; 6–9 lateral abdominal plates; meristics D1,9; A1,5; 28 vertebrae. The cleithrum bears an area free of odontodes. Coloration is characterised by several dark-brown spots distributed across the body; the caudal fin is largely hyaline (transparent) with one dark stripe extending from the base of the caudal peduncle along the median caudal rays, and dark chromatophores arranged in an irregular pattern that approaches two bands near the fin margin.
Sexual dimorphism has not been described for this species in sources reviewed here.
Habitat
Curculionichthys sabaji is known from five localities within the Rio Xingu basin, Pará State, Brazilian Amazon, including the vicinity of Altamira — a stretch of the Xingu subject to intense conservation concern due to the Belo Monte hydroelectric project. The Rio Xingu is a clear-water Amazonian river, and the Xingu basin below the Volta Grande (Big Bend) section encompasses a mosaic of swift rocky channels, flooded forest margins, and rapids habitats.
For a micro-loricariid of this body size and elongated form, a rheophilic microhabitat — rock surfaces and hard substrate in moderate to strong current — is the expected ecological niche, consistent with the general biology of small Hypoptopomatinae from Amazonian white-water rivers. Specific pH, temperature, and water chemistry data for the collection sites of C. sabaji are not available in sources reviewed here.
The restriction to five known localities in the Xingu basin suggests a limited natural range, though under-sampling of the region's cryptic small-bodied loricariid fauna may mean the true distribution is broader.
Feeding
No gut content analysis has been published for Curculionichthys sabaji. Based on its morphology — inferior sucker mouth, small body size, loricariid scute armour, and habitat association with hard substrates — the species is inferred to be a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer, feeding on algae, diatoms, periphyton, and associated fine organic material scraped from rock and woody surfaces.
FishBase records a trophic level of 2.7 for the species, consistent with primary consumer feeding on biofilm. This feeding guild is typical of small Hypoptopomatinae and Otothyrinae across Amazonian river systems.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Curculionichthys sabaji have been published. The species has not been kept in aquaria to any documented degree, and wild behavioural data are absent from sources reviewed here. Given the tiny adult size and restricted known range in an under-surveyed river system, breeding behaviour remains entirely unstudied.
Breeding
Reproductive data for Curculionichthys sabaji are not available. No captive breeding accounts exist for this species or for the genus Curculionichthys. Clutch size, spawning site preferences, incubation period, and parental care behaviour are unknown.
In the aquarium
Curculionichthys sabaji does not appear in the international aquarium trade and has no documented keeping history. At a maximum of roughly 1 in SL — smaller than many popular nano fish — it would theoretically be manageable in a very small aquarium. However, given its apparent restriction to the Xingu basin and the conservation sensitivities around that river system, commercial collection is unlikely.
No husbandry information is available. A Xingu-type setup — warm water (the Xingu is a tropical river), moderate to strong current over clean rocky or sandy substrate, with biofilm-coated surfaces and low organic load — would logically suit a micro-loricariid from this environment. The species is mentioned here for completeness as a described member of its genus; practical aquarium guidance cannot be offered without documented keeping experience.
Conservation
Curculionichthys sabaji has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It was described in 2015 and is known from only five localities in the Rio Xingu basin — a river that has faced severe anthropogenic pressure from the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam complex, which altered water flow, sediment dynamics, and river connectivity in the Volta Grande section of the Xingu.
The combination of restricted known range, micro-endemic Amazonian distribution, and major ongoing habitat modification in its basin makes this species a candidate for future conservation attention. At present, formal threat status cannot be determined; collection from its restricted Xingu localities under current environmental conditions is a legitimate concern pending a formal IUCN assessment.
