Taxonomy & naming
Dekeyseria picta was formally described by Rudolf Kner in 1854, published in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften Wien (volume 7, page 277, plate 4, figure 2), based on material labelled from Manaus, Brazil — the fish's type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination Dekeyseria picta (Kner, 1854), with a lengthy list of synonyms reflecting the species' long and tangled taxonomic history: among the notable earlier combinations are Ancistrus brachyurus, Peckoltia brachyura, Dekeyseria brachyura, and Zonancistrus brachyurus.
The striped colour forms that circulate under the codes L052 and L168 were for some time treated as representing the genus Zonancistrus, but subsequent work — including a 2018 revision by Silva & Rapp Py-Daniel — concluded that colour-based generic separation is not supportable, and the striped forms are properly united with the non-striped forms under Dekeyseria. Both L052 (first coded from upper Orinoco material) and L168 (Rio Negro/lower Orinoco) refer to the same species, D. picta. A 2018 redescription (Silva & Rapp Py-Daniel, Neotropical Ichthyology) confirmed the species' wide distribution and stabilised the synonymy.
Among the names folded into that synonymy is Dekeyseria pulchra (Steindachner, 1915), originally described as Ancistrus pulcher from material taken at the mouth of the Rio Negro near Moura, Brazil — the masculine epithet pulcher was regularised to the feminine pulchra when later authors moved the species into the feminine genus Dekeyseria. Older sources sometimes treat D. pulchra as a separate, more narrowly Orinoco-and-upper-Negro-centred species, but the Catalog of Fishes now treats Dekeyseria pulchra as a further junior synonym of Dekeyseria picta.
Dekeyseria sits within subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae. PlanetCatfish notes its similarity to Lasiancistrus but distinguishes it by the particularly broad, flattened body profile when viewed from above, especially in large adults.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL), with the body unusually broad and strongly depressed — giving the fish its distinctive 'flounder-like' appearance when viewed from above. The extremely flattened profile and wide, splayed pectoral fins are adaptations to fast-flowing, rocky substrates where the fish presses against rock faces and resists current by grip and body shape.
Coloration undergoes a pronounced ontogenetic shift. Juveniles below approximately 3.5 in SL display sharp, contrasting alternating pale and dark transverse bands across the body — the classic 'zebra' look marketed as the butterfly pleco. Intermediate fish (roughly 3.5–5 in SL) show bands that begin to fragment and merge at their edges. Large adults above 5 in SL often appear nearly patternless or with only irregular reticulation in some colour forms, while others retain broader pale blotches on a dark field. This colour plasticity, combined with wide geographic variation, contributed to the historical synonymy confusion.
Like other Dekeyseria, the species is capable of facultative aerial respiration — gulping atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen runs low, a useful trait during the seasonally stagnant, oxygen-poor conditions that blackwater pools and backwaters can develop.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males develop substantial odontodes on the first pectoral-fin ray (which is noticeably thickened) and on the posterior flanks. The male's head is measurably wider than the female's. In addition, the pelvic fin of breeding males can extend beyond the pelvic-fin spine base in well-conditioned individuals — a detail useful for sexing in hand. Females are slimmer with fewer and smaller odontodes.
Habitat
Dekeyseria picta is broadly distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, with confirmed records from the Rio Negro (including the upper Negro), the middle Amazon (Solimões), the lower and upper Negro, the Casiquiare canal linking the Orinoco and Amazon systems, the Demini River (a Negro tributary), the Río Atabapo (upper Orinoco), and the middle Orinoco. The species thus spans both blackwater and mixed clearwater environments.
A peer-reviewed redescription (Silva & Rapp Py-Daniel 2018) characterises D. picta as inhabiting blackwater environments associated with fast-flowing habitats, commonly found among submerged wood or rocky substrates. The blackwater association is significant: in the central Rio Negro, ambient pH can drop to 4.0–5.0 during the dry season, with very low conductivity and near-zero hardness. PlanetCatfish records a pH range of 5.6–6.8 and temperature 75–81 °F for the species, consistent with blackwater conditions at the cooler end of the Amazonian tropics. FishBase records under the synonym Dekeyseria pulchra broaden that range up to about pH 8.0, likely reflecting the Orinoco headwater populations reached via the Casiquiare canal, where the water is less humic-stained and closer to whitewater than the Rio Negro heartland of the species. The flat body and strong clinging ability allow the fish to exploit fast, rocky chutes and riffles that are inaccessible to more rounded-bodied loricariids.
Feeding
Dekeyseria picta is primarily a periphyton and biofilm grazer — it uses the broad, scraping mouth typical of Hypostominae to rasp epilithic algae, bacterial films, and fine detritus from rock surfaces and submerged wood. The diet in the wild likely consists of aufwuchs — the complex community of attached algae, cyanobacteria, fungi, and associated microscopic invertebrates — supplemented by organic detritus carried by current over rock surfaces.
In the aquarium, the species is straightforwardly omnivorous with a vegetarian lean. It will browse algae growing on tank glass and decor but should not be expected to act as an algae-control organism for large or heavily planted tanks. Supplementary feeding with spirulina-based wafers, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and peas keeps animals in good condition. Small amounts of meaty foods — frozen bloodworm, Artemia — can be offered occasionally and are usually accepted. Overfeeding with protein-rich foods is not recommended. Driftwood in the tank serves as both shelter and a supplementary rasping substrate; while D. picta is not a true xylophage, the wood surface biofilm provides incidental nutrition.
Mating
Dekeyseria picta is a narrow-cavity cave spawner — males select and defend a cave whose dimensions closely match their body width, an apparent adaptation that physically prevents a rival male from entering while also providing a tight, sheltered spawning chamber. PlanetCatfish's species page notes 'narrow (height) cave breeders', and keeper accounts consistently describe spawning occurring inside flat-roofed slate caves, narrow PVC pipes, or tight crevices between rocks, with the opening just large enough for the fish to enter.
Courtship involves the male occupying and displaying from the cave entrance. Well-conditioned males are noticeably more robust and thicker-armed (pectoral odontodes prominent) than females. Triggering spawning typically requires soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.8–6.5), a temperature nudge toward 79–81 °F, and regular large water changes that simulate rainy-season dilution. Multiple females can be kept alongside a single male in a sufficiently large tank, but two males in close proximity will compete vigorously for cave territory.
Breeding
Dekeyseria picta is one of the more commonly bred larger ancistrine plecos in the hobby, with nine breeding reports on PlanetCatfish as of 2025. Spawning follows the narrow-cave pattern: the female deposits a tight cluster of adhesive eggs on the cave ceiling or walls, the male fertilises them and then settles in the cave entrance, fanning the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins throughout incubation.
Typical clutch sizes in hobbyist accounts run from roughly 20 to 50 relatively large, pale eggs. Incubation at 79–81 °F spans approximately 5–7 days. Newly hatched fry carry large yolk sacs and remain in or near the cave for several further days; the male continues to guard during this phase. Once yolk is absorbed, free-swimming fry are surprisingly capable grazers and can be offered spirulina powder, Artemia nauplii, and microworm from the outset. Fry of the L052/L168 colour forms display sharply defined banding from an early age that makes them visually distinctive even at 0.5–1 in. Soft, clean, oxygen-rich water is particularly important during larval development.
In the aquarium
At 5.5 in SL, D. picta is a mid-sized pleco that fits comfortably in a 120-litre aquarium, though 40–55 US gal provides better scope for a compatible group or breeding pair. The tank should prioritise flat rock arrangements — slate sheets, smooth river stones, broad pieces of aquarium shale — that replicate the fast-water rocky habitat and also provide the narrow flat-cave spawning sites the fish requires. Provide moderate to strong water flow; an external canister filter supplemented with a powerhead is ideal.
Water parameters should reflect the blackwater origin: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 5.5–6.8, soft water with low hardness (under 8 °dH ideally). Nitrates should be kept low; weekly 25–30% water changes are recommended. Avoid the harder, more alkaline water chemistry suited to East African cichlids or livebearers — D. picta is genuinely soft-water adapted and will show signs of stress (increased susceptibility to infections, faded colouration) in hard, alkaline conditions.
The species is generally peaceful toward non-conspecifics; aggressive interactions are mainly intraspecific and cave-territory related. Suitable tankmates include South American tetras, pencilfish, apistogramma cichlids, Corydoras, and other fish comfortable in soft acidic water. Avoid keeping with large, aggressive pleco species that would monopolise cave territory. Driftwood is a valuable tank addition for both grazing and shelter, though the species' dependence on it is less strict than in true xylophages.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Dekeyseria picta as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a wide geographic distribution across multiple major South American river systems — the Amazon, Negro, and Orinoco basins — and no evidence of range-wide population decline. The species occupies a large extent of occurrence and is collected in moderate quantities for the ornamental trade, with both the Rio Negro (L168) and Orinoco (L052) colour forms available through the hobby.
Captive breeding is well established and documented, which reduces — though does not eliminate — pressure on wild populations from collection. The Rio Negro, the species' heartland for the most-traded forms, is relatively well-protected compared to heavily deforested parts of the Amazon basin. Localised threats include mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining (garimpo) in the upper Negro and Orinoco headwaters, and periodic disturbance from boat traffic and subsistence collection. At a basin scale, the species appears secure.
