Weber's pleco entered hobbyist tanks before it had a scientific name — the L167 code was assigned from Rio Negro blackwater collections years before Carvalho, Lima, and Zawadzki formally described it in 2010. A detritivore built for the dark, soft, tea-stained waters of the middle Río Negro, it is among the larger Hypostomus in trade and one of the few species to carry a formal IUCN Least Concern assessment within this famously data-poor genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus weberi was formally described by Carvalho, Lima, and Zawadzki in 2010, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, number 1, page 44, Figure 3). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this as a valid species, and no synonyms are currently listed. The species belongs to the large, polyphyletic genus Hypostomus — the most species-rich genus in Loricariidae — within the subfamily Hypostominae.

In the aquarium hobby the fish had been in circulation before its formal description under the L-number code L167, assigned by the German aquarium press (DATZ) for undescribed loricariids from Rio Negro collections. The L-number designation persists in trade alongside the accepted scientific name.

The specific epithet honours the Dutch biologist Carl Weber. Distribution extends across the middle Río Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil, with one uncertain record from the Río Siapa — a tributary of the Río Casiquiare — in Venezuela, which would extend the known range into the upper Casiquiare corridor if confirmed.

Morphology

Hypostomus weberi is a medium-to-large loricariid. Published size data contain a discrepancy: the FishBase entry lists 7 in SL, which likely reflects the holotype or a small type series specimen, whereas PlanetCatfish records 12 in SL — a figure more consistent with field-collected adults and broadly in line with other large middle-Río-Negro Hypostomus. A working maximum of approximately 12 in SL is used here pending a published size series in the primary literature.

Body form follows the standard Hypostomus plan: robust, dorsoventrally flattened, with complete bony scute armour covering the flanks and a prominent dorsal fin. The ventral surface is unplated and pale. Coloration in this blackwater species tends toward dark brown to near-black on the dorsum with subtle patterning; exact juvenile-to-adult pattern change is not well documented in published sources.

The ventrally positioned mouth bears the keratinised teeth typical of omnivorous-detritivore Hypostomus — not the broad spatulate teeth of the wood-eating Panaque clade, but narrow, multi-cusped structures suited to scraping biofilm and detritus from submerged surfaces. The species is a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface when dissolved oxygen is low — an adaptation widespread in blackwater loricariids.

Habitat

The middle Río Negro is the world's largest blackwater river, draining a vast expanse of ancient, nutrient-poor Amazonian sediments. Its waters are extraordinarily soft (near-zero hardness) and acidic — pH values commonly fall between 3.5 and 5.5 in the main channel and flooded-forest igapó zones — and are coloured deep amber to dark brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from decaying organic matter. Conductivity is negligible. Temperatures in the middle Negro typically range from about 79–86 °F.

FishBase notes habitat as "rapids and flooded forest," placing H. weberi across two contrasting microhabitats: rocky rapid zones with current and the seasonally inundated igapó forest floor. This breadth is consistent with other large Río Negro Hypostomus that move between fast-water rock substrates and slower flooded-forest habitats as the river rises and falls through its pronounced annual flood pulse. The type locality coordinates (approximately 0°58'S, 62°57'W, near Barcelos, Amazonas) lie in the heart of the middle Negro's biologically richest zone.

Feeding

FishBase records H. weberi as a detritivore. This broad designation is consistent with the feeding mode observed across most non-xylophage Hypostomus: the fish uses its ventral sucking disc and rasping teeth to scrape and ingest a mixed diet of algae, biofilm (bacteria, fungi, diatoms), fine particulate organic matter, and decaying wood surfaces. In the soft, dark, oligotrophic waters of the Río Negro, benthic detritus accumulated from the flooded forest and terrestrial leaf litter is likely a major food source.

In the aquarium, the diet should reflect this omnivore-detritivore character. Sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, sweet potato) form the staple. Occasional protein supplementation — sinking carnivore wafers, frozen bloodworm — is appropriate given the wide natural diet. Pieces of driftwood should be provided both for grazing surface and behavioural enrichment; while H. weberi is not a true xylophage, wood biofilm contributes to its diet in the wild.

Mating

No published breeding observations for H. weberi in the wild or in captivity are available in the sources reviewed. General Hypostomus reproductive biology may be cautiously applied: males in large Hypostomus typically defend burrow or rock-crevice territories and develop elongated interopercular odontodes during the breeding season. Courtship involves male territorial display and olfactory signalling. Females select the fittest males based on territory quality and male condition.

Given the pronounced flood-pulse seasonality of the Río Negro, seasonal cues — rainfall, temperature drop, water softening — likely trigger reproductive readiness, as documented in numerous Amazonian loricariids. Replicating such cues with deliberate water changes and a modest temperature reduction may be relevant for aquarium conditioning attempts.

Breeding

No documented breeding reports for H. weberi in captivity are recorded on PlanetCatfish or in the primary literature reviewed here. The species has only two registered keepers listed on PlanetCatfish, indicating it is uncommon in collections. Breeding mode in large Hypostomus is typically substrate spawning in excavated burrows or rock crevices, with paternal or biparental egg guarding — a pattern that would apply provisionally to H. weberi, though it cannot be confirmed from available data.

At approximately 12 in, a successfully breeding pair would require a very large tank with appropriate burrow sites. Given the blackwater origin, soft, acidic water conditioning would be essential for any serious breeding attempt.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus weberi is an uncommon fish in the hobby. With a working maximum size of around 12 in SL, it is a substantial animal requiring a large aquarium — a minimum of 90–120 US gal is a reasonable starting point for an adult, with a footprint that provides adequate territory and bottom grazing area. Very few keepers are recorded on PlanetCatfish, and it is not a regularly imported species.

Water chemistry should reflect the extreme blackwater conditions of the Río Negro: temperature 79–86 °F, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft water (close to zero hardness). Standard tap water will need considerable treatment — RO water blended to achieve the correct parameters is the practical approach. Standard dechlorinated hard tap water is unsuitable long-term and may cause chronic stress or immune compromise.

Decoration should include driftwood, smooth boulders, and low light to replicate the tannin-rich, shaded igapó environment. Strong filtration with good biological capacity is essential given the bioload of a large loricariid. The species is a facultative air-breather and must have unobstructed surface access.

H. weberi is best kept in a species-appropriate biotope tank or with similarly soft-water-adapted tankmates. Its rarity and demanding water requirements make it an enthusiast fish rather than a general community animal. Importation from wild Brazilian Rio Negro collections is subject to Brazilian export regulations, and availability is sporadic.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus weberi as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment reflects the species' presence across the extensive middle Río Negro basin, one of the best-protected large river systems in Amazonia. The Rio Negro drainage lies largely within the Brazilian Amazon, much of which falls under federal conservation units or indigenous territories.

That said, the Río Negro basin faces incremental pressure from mercury contamination linked to artisanal gold mining (garimpo), deforestation at its margins, and occasional illegal fish collection. The ornamental trade is likely a minor factor given the species' rarity in the hobby. The IUCN LC status reflects current range-wide stability rather than an absence of localised threats.
