Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus dolichopterus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in his 1854 monograph on South American loricariid fishes, based on specimens labelled from Manaus — the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon Solimões — in Amazonas State, Brazil. The type locality is generally interpreted as the lower or middle Rio Negro rather than the Amazon proper, because this species is consistently an endemic of the Negro drainage.
The authority is non-parenthetical (Kner, 1854): Kner placed the species in Ancistrus when he described it, and it has remained there. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Ancistrus dolichopterus Kner, 1854 as a valid species.
For most of the twentieth century, the species name A. dolichopterus was applied loosely to multiple bristlenose pleco taxa from across Amazonia, including the common-bristlenose aquarium fish now known as Ancistrus cirrhosus. The critical revision came via the L-number system and subsequent taxonomic work: Müller (1999) identified L183 — a distinctive spotted bristlenose from the middle and lower Rio Negro — as the 'true' A. dolichopterus, recognisable by its unique dorsal-fin formula of I/9 (one spine, nine soft rays), a count not found in any other described Ancistrus. Most trade fish sold as 'bristlenose pleco' are not A. dolichopterus.
Ancistrus belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae (order Siluriformes). Loricariidae is the largest catfish family and one of the most species-rich vertebrate families on Earth, with more than 900 valid species and an estimated additional 100–200 awaiting description. Ancistrus is itself a large and taxonomically complex genus, with around 60–70 valid described species, and the systematics of the group are actively being revised using molecular and morphological methods.
Morphology
Ancistrus dolichopterus is a moderately sized bristlenose. FishBase records a maximum of 5.5 in standard length (SL) with a published weight up to 120 g, while Seriously Fish gives a notably larger maximum of about 7–8 in SL — the FishBase figure derives from a small type series and probably understates the fish's full size. PlanetCatfish lists an intermediate 4.5 in SL. Most aquarium adults settle around 4–5 in SL.
The body is typically Ancistrus in form: dorsally flattened, fully armoured in interlocking bony scutes, with a broad suction-disc mouth bearing rows of small spatulate teeth. The diagnostic character separating A. dolichopterus from every congener is the dorsal-fin formula I/9 — a single spine followed by nine branched soft rays — whereas most Ancistrus have I/7 or I/8. This extra-long dorsal fin is the literal meaning of the species name: Greek dolichós ('long') + pterón ('fin').
The colour pattern is highly distinctive. The base body colour is dark brown to nearly black, overlaid with numerous white or pale-cream spots of variable size scattered irregularly across the head, body, and into the fins. Juveniles and subadults show the most vivid contrast — the spots are brilliant white and the dorsal and anal fin margins carry a conspicuous ivory-white seam that is the origin of the 'starlight' and 'snowflake' trade names. This white fin margin fades in fully adult fish, particularly large males, though the body spotting persists.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Mature males develop the bushy tentacles (fleshy tentacle-like appendages, sometimes called bristles or cirri) on the snout and head that are the hallmark of the genus Ancistrus, and they also develop stout odontodes on the pectoral-fin rays and interopercular region. Females have shorter, simpler tentacles restricted to the snout margin rather than erupting from the full head surface, and their pectoral odontodes are less developed. Gravid females are distinctly plumper through the abdomen.
Habitat
Ancistrus dolichopterus is a specialist of the middle and lower Rio Negro, the immense blackwater tributary that drains a vast catchment of ancient Guiana Shield and Brazilian Precambrian sediments north and west of Manaus. The Rio Negro is one of the world's most acidic and ion-poor large rivers: pH values of 3.8–5.5 are typical, total dissolved solids rarely exceed 5–10 mg/L, and the water is stained a deep tea-brown to near-black by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from centuries of accumulated organic matter in the catchment.
Within this system, A. dolichopterus occupies flowing streams and tributaries — the igapó (seasonally flooded forest), submerged driftwood tangles, root mats, leaf-litter banks, and boulder faces that characterise the Rio Negro's tributary network. It is predominantly a nocturnal forager that shelters under or inside wood and rocky crevices by day. The preferred microhabitat appears to be the surfaces of submerged logs and branches, where biofilm, algae, and small invertebrates are concentrated.
Water temperatures in the Rio Negro system where this species occurs are typically 75–82 °F, with the warm season pushing toward 86 °F in smaller, sun-exposed tributaries. Dissolved oxygen, though lower than in whitewater rivers, remains adequate due to moderate current and the fish's facultative air-breathing capability — like many loricariids, it can gulp air at the surface when oxygen is low. The species tolerates the extremely soft, acidic Rio Negro conditions that would stress most aquarium fish.
Feeding
Ancistrus dolichopterus is an omnivorous aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps biofilm, periphyton (attached algae), diatoms, fungal hyphae, and microinvertebrates from submerged surfaces — primarily wood and rock — using its rows of spatulate teeth. The suction disc mouth is well adapted to clinging to current-swept surfaces while feeding. Organic detritus and decomposing plant matter (including wood fragments) are also ingested incidentally, and possibly deliberately for the associated microorganisms.
Wood consumption deserves clarification. Although A. dolichopterus, like many Ancistrus species, will rasp submerged wood persistently and appears to derive nutritional benefit from the biofilm coating it, it is not a true xylivore in the specialised sense of Panaque and Panaqolus species, whose gut microbiology enables cellulose digestion. Ancistrus simply benefits from the wood's surface productivity and possibly ingests some plant material, but does not require wood for digestive function the way Panaque does.
In the aquarium, a balanced diet should be offered: high-quality sinking wafers (algae- or spirulina-based), blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette/zucchini, raw potato), and occasional protein-rich supplements such as frozen bloodworm, daphnia, or brine shrimp. Pieces of driftwood in the aquarium serve both as grazing surfaces and as enrichment. An exclusively algae-based diet without protein is not optimal; an exclusively meat-based diet is also unbalanced.
Mating
Ancistrus dolichopterus follows the standard Ancistrus breeding system, which is built around male territory and cave occupation. Males establish and defend individual caves or tight crevices — naturally provided by woody debris, root tangles, or rock gaps in the wild, and replicated in the aquarium with ceramic tubes, PVC pipe sections, or slate caves. A dominant male occupies his cave site persistently, emerging at night to feed and chase rival males.
Courtship is not elaborate. The male's primary display is presence and cave-holding; when a ripe female approaches, she enters the cave and the pair spawns in close contact inside. The female deposits a cluster of adhesive eggs in the deepest part of the cavity and then departs. The male assumes sole responsibility for the clutch from this point.
Males in healthy aquarium groups show vigorous inter-male competition for cave sites, with fin-nipping and chasing being common. Providing multiple caves — more than the number of males — reduces stress and injury. Females may visit multiple males' caves over a spawning period if conditions are right. The seasonality of spawning in the wild is not well documented for this species, but in captivity spawning occurs year-round under stable conditions and may be stimulated by temperature variation mimicking rainfall.
Breeding
The male of Ancistrus dolichopterus is a devoted egg-guardian. After the female departs, he remains in the cave, actively fanning the egg clutch with his pectoral and ventral fins to maintain oxygenation. The eggs are relatively large, yellow to pale-orange, and the clutch size is typically 30–80 eggs — Ancistrus species are moderately fecund relative to the small Hypancistrus plecos. Scotcat records hatching at approximately 5–7 days at 77–81 °F.
The newly hatched larvae carry large yolk sacs and remain huddled in the cave, where the male continues to guard them. Within 5–10 days the yolk is absorbed and the fry become free-swimming. Young Ancistrus dolichopterus emerge with the characteristic spotted pattern already visible at very small size and immediately begin grazing biofilm from surfaces. First foods in the aquarium include microworm, baby brine shrimp nauplii, fine powdered algae wafers, and blanched lettuce or spinach pressed flat onto the glass.
Growth is moderately fast; fry reach 1 in within two to three months under warm, well-fed conditions. Captive breeding of this species is straightforward for experienced bristlenose keepers, and it has been bred regularly in European and American fishrooms since the 1990s, though it is rarer in captivity than the common bristlenose (A. cirrhosus) due to its greater water-chemistry sensitivity.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus dolichopterus is not a beginner's pleco but is manageable for the intermediate keeper willing to maintain authentic Rio Negro conditions. The critical requirement is soft, acidic, warm water. pH in the range 5.0–7.0 is appropriate; pH above 7.5 is stressful over the long term. Total dissolved solids should be low — water conditioned with Indian almond leaves, peat filtration, or Sera Blackwater Aqua-Safe produces conditions closer to the species' natural environment. Temperature: 75–82 °F (with 79–81 °F ideal).
A minimum tank size of 31.5 in length (approximately 25 US gal) suits a pair or small group. The aquarium should be furnished with driftwood pieces — both for grazing and for the behavioural enrichment of cave-like recesses — plus several dedicated spawning caves (ceramic tubes or flat slate bridges) if breeding is intended. Live or plastic plants are acceptable; the fish do not typically destroy plants.
Filtration must produce steady current and good surface agitation; the species does not thrive in sluggish, poorly oxygenated setups. A quality canister filter rated for double the tank volume is a good baseline. Weekly water changes of 25–30 % with soft, slightly acidic water maintain water quality without mineral overloading.
This is a peaceful species appropriate for community blackwater tanks alongside small tetras (Hyphessobrycon, Paracheirodon), pencilfish, dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma), and other Rio Negro residents. Males can be territorial with each other and with other cave-defending plecos if space is limited; one male per 80-litre section is a practical rule. Driftwood, biofilm, and the aesthetic of a Rio Negro setup complement this fish extremely well.
Conservation
Ancistrus dolichopterus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated on 21 October 2020. The assessment reflects the species' moderately large range across the Rio Negro basin, its occurrence in a geographically remote area with limited habitat destruction relative to more accessible parts of Amazonia, and the lack of evidence for significant population decline.
The primary threats to the species are collection pressure from the ornamental fish trade and any future degradation of the Rio Negro catchment. The Rio Negro basin as a whole contains extraordinarily high fish biodiversity and endemism, and proposals for hydroelectric development in the upper Negro have raised conservation concerns for the ichthyofauna generally. Currently, however, the middle and lower Rio Negro where A. dolichopterus occurs remains one of the less-disturbed major Amazonian river systems.
The species is not protected under CITES and is regularly traded internationally in the ornamental fish market. The vast majority of individuals in trade are wild-caught; captive breeding exists but is not widespread compared to the common bristlenose (Ancistrus cirrhosus). Continued collection at scale without attention to sustainable harvest levels could become a future concern if demand increases significantly.
