One of the most convincingly plant-like fish in the hobby, Farlowella knerii carries an implausibly elongated body — rostrum to tail — that passes for a waterlogged twig in the dim, vegetated waterways of Ecuador and Peru. Patience is its defining trait in both the wild and the aquarium: it grazes biofilm and algae from surfaces with unhurried deliberateness, retreating from boisterous tankmates rather than competing with them.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella knerii was formally described by Franz Steindachner in 1882 in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 19, number 19, p. 177), from material collected in eastern Ecuador. The original combination was Acestra knerii; the valid combination Farlowella knerii is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). Retzer and Page (1997) redescribed the species in full in their authoritative monograph on the stick catfishes — Systematics of the stick catfishes, Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann (Pisces, Loricariidae), Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 148: 1–88 — providing updated morphometrics, type-series data, and distribution records.

The genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 commemorates William G. Farlow (1844–1919), an American botanist at Harvard University who specialised in algae — an apt dedication for a genus that grazes algal films for a living. The specific epithet knerii honours Rudolf Kner (1810–1869), Austrian zoologist and icthyologist at the University of Vienna who described numerous South American fishes from collections assembled by imperial expeditions.

Farlowella belongs to subfamily Loricariinae within Loricariidae, a lineage characterised by extreme body elongation, a pronounced rostral extension anterior to the mouth, and an absence of the dorsal adipose fin present in some other loricariid subfamilies. Within the genus, F. knerii is distinguished from congeners by scute counts and rostrum proportions as established by Retzer and Page.

Morphology

Farlowella knerii reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 6.5 in SL — a figure that understates the actual visual impression because the body is extraordinarily slender. The depth-to-length ratio is among the smallest of any loricariid, giving the fish the cross-section of a pencil. Total length, including the delicate caudal filaments, adds several centimetres beyond the standard measurement.

The diagnostic character of the genus is the rostrum — a stiffened, bony extension of the snout that projects well forward of the mouth, whose tip rests on wood or leaf surfaces when the fish feeds. The body is covered in longitudinal rows of keeled bony scutes. Ground colour is brown, overlaid with two dark lateral stripes that run from the rostrum tip, through the eye, to the caudal peduncle — a pattern that echoes the longitudinal grain of a waterlogged stick when the fish lies still against wood or stems.

The dorsal fin is positioned close to the body midpoint and is modest in size. All fins are translucent to lightly pigmented, blending with the surroundings. Sexual dimorphism is discreet outside the breeding season: breeding males develop a fringe of fine odontodes (bristles) along the dorsal surface of the rostrum, which females lack. Gravid females are also noticeably deeper-bodied through the abdomen when viewed from above.

Habitat

Farlowella knerii is recorded from the upper Amazon drainage of eastern Ecuador and Peru — principally the Napo and Pastaza river systems, the major Amazonian tributaries that drain the eastern slopes of the Andes. The type locality is Canelos, a small community in eastern Ecuador within the Pastaza basin.

The headwater rivers of the Napo and Pastaza are clear to slightly turbid, moderately flowing streams fed by Andean snowmelt and rainfall. Water chemistry in these upper drainages is characteristically soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH approximately 6.0–7.5), with low conductivity and temperatures in the range of 75–81 °F. Current can be noticeable in main-channel reaches but slack backwaters, flooded margins, and submerged vegetation beds offer the microhabitats most used by twig catfishes.

Microhabitat association is strongly with submerged wood, woody debris, and aquatic plants — surfaces colonised by the periphyton biofilm that constitutes the species' diet. The fish rest horizontally against these substrates, relying on their camouflage rather than flight as a primary anti-predator strategy.

Feeding

Farlowella knerii is a periphyton grazer: it scrapes algal films, diatoms, and associated organic detritus from hard surfaces using its underslung, disc-like mouth. The rostrum acts as a tactile probe and positioning aid, pressing the mouth against textured wood, submerged roots, smooth stones, or large plant leaves while the fish rasps slowly across the surface.

In the aquarium, natural algae growth on glass, wood, and large-leaved plants forms the foundation of the diet and should be encouraged rather than eliminated. Supplementary feeding is necessary in clean tanks where biofilm is sparse: thin rounds of blanched courgette (zucchini) or cucumber, spirulina wafers, and sinking algae tablets placed near favourite resting sites are accepted. The species is not a wood-eater in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque, and driftwood — while useful as décor and cover — is not a dietary requirement. Feeding activity is unhurried and continuous throughout the day; these fish rarely dash for food as more active species do.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in Farlowella in general is understated. Males develop prominent rostral odontodes during the breeding season — a fringe of fine bristles on the dorsal snout — and gravid females are noticeably deeper-bodied. In related species that have been bred in captivity (notably F. acus and F. gracilis), males position themselves alongside females on flat surfaces prior to spawning, and may nudge or rest alongside a receptive female for extended periods before eggs are deposited.

No specific courtship observations have been published for F. knerii, and there are no captive breeding records for this species on file. The reproductive mode described for congeners is the most reliable available guide: egg deposition on flat, hard surfaces followed by male guarding.

Breeding

No captive breeding record exists for Farlowella knerii specifically. Information on breeding is therefore drawn from documented accounts of congeners (F. acus, F. gracilis) and the general biology of the genus.

Farlowella species deposit adhesive egg clutches on flat hard surfaces — aquarium glass, broad-leaved plants such as Anubias, smooth flat rocks, or sections of slate. The male remains with the clutch, fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain water circulation and oxygen supply, and removing any fungused or infertile eggs. Incubation in congeners at tropical temperatures lasts approximately 7–10 days. Newly hatched fry are miniature but fragile, and early survival depends on the availability of established biofilm for grazing from the first days of free swimming.

For aquarists interested in attempting a spawn, the conditioning approach used for related twig catfishes applies: a varied vegetable diet, pristine soft slightly acidic water, and gentle seasonal temperature variation to simulate cue cycles. Whether F. knerii would respond to the same triggers as more temperate-origin congeners is unknown.

In the aquarium

Farlowella knerii is an undemanding species in terms of water chemistry — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at 75–81 °F suits it well — but it demands good husbandry in two specific respects: water quality and a peaceful community.

These are thin-bodied, delicate fish that have very limited reserves. They are sensitive to dissolved waste accumulation and should never be added to an immature aquarium. Weekly water changes of 25–30%, a well-cycled biological filter, and zero ammonia and nitrite are prerequisites. Standard lengths of 6.5 in mean they are not tiny, but their near-zero body depth and gentle disposition make them vulnerable in any tank with boisterous or nippy tankmates. Avoid fast-swimming barbs, aggressive cichlids, and any fish large enough to attempt to eat them.

Ideal companions are small, peaceful mid-water species — small tetras, rasboras, hatchetfish, and Corydoras — that will not outcompete them for food or stress them with persistent activity. The aquarium should be furnished with driftwood and large-leaved plants (Java fern, Anubias, Echinodorus) to provide resting sites and natural grazing surfaces. A tight-fitting lid is advisable; these fish can and do escape through small gaps.

PlanetCatfish holds no registered breeding reports for this species, reflecting its scarcity in the hobby rather than any particular difficulty. Wild-caught specimens require the usual acclimation care: quarantine, gentle handling, and establishment of biofilm before introduction.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Farlowella knerii as Least Concern in 2014, noting a broad distribution across the upper Amazon drainage of Ecuador and Peru and no evidence of rapid population decline. The Napo and Pastaza drainages, while subject to some deforestation and oil extraction pressure in their lower reaches, retain extensive intact riparian and flooded-forest habitat in the headwater zones where this species is found.

The species is not widely collected for the ornamental trade — it appears infrequently in retail, and PlanetCatfish has no registered keeper or breeding records — so commercial harvest pressure is low. Its long-term security will depend on the health of Andean-Amazon river corridors and the preservation of riparian vegetation that sustains the biofilm communities on which the genus depends.
