Farlowella mariaelenae is a master of disguise so thorough it barely registers as a fish: pressed motionless against a submerged twig or the stem of an aquatic plant, it is essentially invisible to predator and observer alike. This twig catfish from the western Orinoco basin of Venezuela carries the longest, most slender body plan in freshwater fishkeeping — a body plan so extreme that it has been independently evolved from the same loricariid chassis that produced the squat, broad-headed pleco of the pet trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella mariaelenae was described by Martín Salazar in 1964 in Memoria de la Sociedad de Ciencias Naturales La Salle (volume 24, number 69, pp. 246, fig. 1). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Farlowella mariaelenae Martín Salazar, 1964 as the valid combination. The type locality is Río Salinas, a tributary of Río Pao Viejo, northeast of El Baúl, Estado Cojedes, Venezuela — a whitewater tributary of the western Orinoco system. The species was formally redescribed by Retzer and Page in 1997, clarifying its morphological limits within the genus.

The genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to the tribe Harttiini of subfamily Loricariinae (Armbruster, 2004). This tribe is characterised by algae- and aufwuchs-grazing, association with firm substrates (rock, wood, stems) rather than soft sand, and sensitivity to low oxygen levels — contrasting sharply with the carnivorous, open-substrate Loricariini. Farlowella itself is defined by its extreme elongation, a prominent rostrum of variable length, and two lateral dark stripes running from rostrum tip through the eye to the tail.

The genus contains around 30–35 recognised species. A key to the genus, noting the role of ventral scute rows in identification, is available on the PlanetCatfish forum. F. mariaelenae is distinguished by having three rows of ventral plates — a feature visible in close-up photographs on PlanetCatfish — which separates it from some congeners that have only two. The epithet mariaelenae is a feminine genitive honouring a person named María Elena; the dedicatee of the original description has not been widely publicised in accessible ichthyological literature.

Morphology

Adults reach 6.5 in standard length (SL), equivalent to roughly 8–8.5 in total length. The body plan is extreme: narrow and essentially cylindrical in cross-section, with a long, pointed rostrum projecting anteriorly from a small, dorsally-positioned eye and a tiny downward-pointing mouth. The entire body — from snout to the base of the caudal fin — is armoured in longitudinal rows of keeled bony scutes that interlock like fish scales writ large; the ventral surface shows the diagnostic three rows of ventral plates.

Coloration is tan to brown above, closely matching dead wood and submerged plant stems, with two continuous dark brown lateral stripes running from the very tip of the rostrum, through the eye, and extending to the caudal fin base. The ventral surface is pale cream. The dorsal fin is located near the middle of the body — a key generic character of Farlowella, contrasting with related genera in which the dorsal is placed further forward.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle outside of breeding condition. Breeding males develop rows of stiff odontodes (bristles) along the sides of the rostrum — the 'snout bristles' — a reliable secondary sex character. Females lack these bristles or have them only weakly developed. The caudal fin is small and rounded in both sexes; the tail lacks the extended filament seen in some other loricariines.

Habitat

Farlowella mariaelenae is distributed in the western Orinoco River basin of Venezuela, with PlanetCatfish recording confirmed occurrences in the Upper Orinoco (Guaviare drainage), Middle Orinoco (Río Meta), and Middle Orinoco (Río Apure) sub-basins. FishBase notes a possible extension to Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela. The type locality in Estado Cojedes places the species in the Orinoco llanos (plains) drainage.

A critical ecological note from PlanetCatfish is that F. mariaelenae is 'found only in whitewaters and never blackwaters' — meaning it occupies the nutrient-richer, more alkaline, sediment-laden whitewater rivers draining the Andes and Venezuelan lowlands, not the acidic, humic blackwater rivers of the Guiana Shield. This has direct aquarium implications: soft, very acidic conditions are not appropriate for this species, unlike many Orinoco and Amazon fishes.

The species occupies shallow, slow to moderately flowing sections of rivers and their tributaries, clinging to submerged wood, aquatic vegetation stems, and trailing roots. It is a member of the Harttiini, a tribe associated with firm substrates rather than soft sand. Water conditions in its range: temperature 75–86 °F (PlanetCatfish), pH 6.4–7.8. FishBase notes the genus as capable of facultative air-breathing.

Feeding

Farlowella mariaelenae is an algae and aufwuchs grazer — a member of the herbivorous Harttiini, not the carnivorous Loricariini. In the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, periphyton, and the associated microorganism community (the aufwuchs) from the surfaces of submerged wood, stones, and plant stems using its small, downward-pointing mouth armed with fine, spatulate teeth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.5 (±0.2) for the species, consistent with primary production consumption.

In aquaria, feeding Farlowella is one of the principal challenges. Unlike larger plecos, they are slow, deliberate feeders that cannot compete with aggressive tank-mates. Quality Marine notes that in a clean tank without sufficient algae, the fish risks starvation. Ideally the aquarium should have a mature growth of green algae and aufwuchs for background foraging. This should be supplemented with algae wafers (placed where the fish habitually rests), spirulina flake softened by soaking, and blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), spinach, and cucumber all work, pressed against wood or glass. Small amounts of live or frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp) can be offered as a protein supplement, especially during breeding conditioning.

Good lighting to promote algae growth and avoidance of aggressive food competitors are both essential maintenance requirements.

Mating

Farlowella mariaelenae, like all Farlowella, spawns on flat surfaces — typically vertical ones such as the glass pane or a broad leaf, or on smooth driftwood faces. The male's snout bristles are the primary visual sexual character and signal reproductive readiness; fully bristled males should be paired with smoothly-snouted females. Courtship in related Farlowella species involves the male guarding a selected spawning site and herding the female towards it.

The genus Farlowella belongs to the flat-spawning Harttiini rather than the lip-brooding or cave-spawning strategies seen in Loricariini. After the female deposits a tightly-packed adhesive egg mass on the chosen surface, the male fertilises it and thereafter assumes exclusive guard duty, fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins and tail to maintain water flow and oxygen supply around the developing embryos.

PlanetCatfish lists no registered captive breeding reports for F. mariaelenae specifically — consistent with the species' rarity in collections and the challenges of maintaining Farlowella in good long-term condition. Breeding is occasionally achieved in well-maintained, mature planted tanks using related species such as F. acus, F. vittata, and Sturisoma barbatum, and similar principles are expected to apply here.

Breeding

In the Farlowella breeding mode, fertilised eggs are deposited in a compact, usually circular mass, adhered by a sticky matrix to a vertical or near-vertical surface. Clutch sizes in the genus are modest — typically 50–150 eggs in related species — reflecting the external brooding rather than internal protection of eggs. The male guards and fans the clutch continuously until hatching, which in related species occurs in approximately 7–10 days at 79–82 °F.

Fry emerge as miniature adults in body plan but with a proportionately large yolk sac that sustains them for the first day or two. Once the yolk is consumed they begin rasping algae immediately; they are extremely small and initially need infusoria, liquid fry food, or very fine green algae paste in addition to biofilm from mature surfaces. Fry growth is slow and they remain delicate for the first few weeks.

For any attempt at captive breeding, a well-established, brightly lit tank with abundant algae and aufwuchs growth is the most important prerequisite. Water temperature in the 79–82 °F range, regular partial water changes, and conditioning on varied algae-based and small live foods should precede any breeding attempt. Strong current is beneficial — Harttiini generally respond well to oxygenated, well-circulated water. Avoid any chemical treatments or sudden parameter changes during incubation.

In the aquarium

Farlowella mariaelenae is an uncommon but regularly traded twig catfish, with 16 registered keepers on PlanetCatfish — more than many Farlowella species, suggesting some availability through specialist importers. At 6.5 in SL (roughly 8 in total length), it is an appropriate size for a 25–40 US gal aquarium, though more space is always better.

The critical parameter is substrate and structure, not tank volume alone. This fish needs a tank furnished with smooth driftwood, submerged plant stems, and ideally living plants (Java fern, Anubias, Vallisneria) against which it will rest and forage. It spends much of its time motionless, clinging to a surface — this is not lethargy but camouflaged ambush-style resting, and a fish that hasn't moved for hours is often perfectly healthy.

Water: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.4–7.5, soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated, and with gentle to moderate flow. PlanetCatfish stresses that this species is found only in whitewater — neutral to slightly soft, not acidic blackwater — so water that is too soft and acidic is counterproductive. Pristine water quality is essential; Farlowella species are notably sensitive to elevated nitrates and deteriorating water conditions.

Tankmates should be chosen very carefully. Avoid anything nippy (tiger barbs, serpae tetras) as twig catfish are slow and passive and will not flee from fin-nipping. Small hatchetfish, non-aggressive tetras, and Corydoras catfish are the classic companions recommended by PlanetCatfish. Larger cichlids and any aggressive mid-water fish should be avoided. A group of two to four Farlowella is feasible in a large, well-planted tank but requires sufficient feeding stations and foraged surface area.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Farlowella mariaelenae as Least Concern in November 2020. This reflects the species' occurrence across multiple drainage systems within the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and the absence of documented population declines. The western Orinoco basin faces some habitat pressure from agricultural development in the Venezuelan llanos, but these impacts have not been assessed as threatening the species' viability.

Farlowella as a genus presents taxonomic challenges — many species in the trade are misidentified, and the true distribution of F. mariaelenae versus allied species such as F. vittata (which has an established introduced population in Florida) is not always clear from hobbyist records. This taxonomic uncertainty makes population trend assessment difficult.

The species is rarely kept or bred in captivity, meaning wild collection meets demand — though demand itself is relatively low given the species' care requirements. There is no known aquaculture programme for this or most Farlowella species. Preservation of intact whitewater river habitats with submerged wood and aquatic vegetation in Venezuela's Orinoco tributaries is the most important conservation consideration for this species.
