Farlowella martini is a twig catfish of the Caribbean coastal drainages of Venezuela, a biogeographically distinct set of rivers that has produced a number of endemic freshwater fish found nowhere else. Like its Venezuelan relatives, this elongate loricariid is a specialist of clean, well-structured shallow-water habitats, spending its days pressed motionless against submerged surfaces while grazing the microbial films that accumulate on them.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella martini was described by Fernández-Yépez in 1972 from Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela. The species was subsequently included in the revision of the genus by Retzer and Page (1997), which clarified species limits and synonymies across Farlowella. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Farlowella martini Fernández-Yépez, 1972 as the valid name.

The genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae of the family Loricariidae — the armoured catfishes. Loricariinae is characterised by a strongly depressed and elongated body, a greatly produced rostrum (snout), and a mosaic of bony scutes covering the dorsal surface. Within this subfamily, Farlowella species are immediately distinguishable by their extreme twig-like slenderness, which is among the most pronounced in the entire family.

The species epithet martini honours Felipe José Martín Salazar, a Venezuelan ichthyologist who made contributions to the study of Neotropical fishes. A taxonomic note is warranted: the name 'martini' appears independently in other loricariid genera — Ancistrus martini and Acestridium martini are separate and unrelated species bearing the same epithet in honour of different individuals or to different referents. These share only the epithet, not any close relationship with F. martini.

Farlowella martini is Not Evaluated (NE) by the IUCN — a gap that likely reflects the species' rarity in collections and limited research attention rather than an absence of conservation concern.

Morphology

Farlowella martini reaches approximately 7.5 in standard length (SL), placing it among the larger twig catfishes. Published weight data indicate a maximum of approximately 12.30 g — a figure consistent with the extreme slenderness of the body plan, in which most of the length is contributed by the rostrum and bony lateral plates rather than body mass.

The body form is the highly specialised Farlowella silhouette: a very long, cylindrically narrow profile tapering at both ends, with the rostrum comprising a substantial proportion of total length. The body is covered in keeled bony scutes in longitudinal series. Colouration in the genus is typically cryptic — pale brown to tan with faint longitudinal dark lateral stripes — closely mimicking the appearance of a submerged twig or root fragment.

The inferior mouth is small and disc-like, furnished with fine brush-like teeth suited for scraping biofilm from smooth surfaces. The pectoral fins are broad and used to anchor the fish against a substrate. Specific morphological data distinguishing F. martini from congeners are those defined by Retzer and Page (1997) and pertain to plate counts and snout proportions. Sexual dimorphism in this species follows the general Farlowella pattern: males in breeding condition develop dermal odontodes on the snout margins and pectoral spines; females become noticeably broader through the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Farlowella martini is recorded from Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela. These are rivers that drain the northern slopes of the Venezuelan coastal mountain range (Cordillera de la Costa) and flow northward into the Caribbean Sea, passing through states such as Aragua, Carabobo, and adjacent regions. This is a distinct biogeographic province from the Orinoco basin to the south, separated by the mountain range itself, and is home to several fish taxa found nowhere else.

The Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela are typically short, fast-falling mountain streams in their upper reaches that transition to broader, slower-moving lowland channels near the coast. Water chemistry in these systems tends toward warm temperatures (73–82 °F), with pH and hardness varying considerably from the soft, acidic headwaters to more alkaline lowland reaches. No specific water-chemistry data are available for the localities from which F. martini was collected.

Microhabitat preferences inferred from the biology of the genus centre on areas of submerged vegetation, root tangles, fallen wood, and aquatic macrophytes in slow-moving or quiet-water margins where biofilm can develop on surfaces. Feeding

Farlowella martini is a biofilm grazer and benthic feeder, consistent with the feeding ecology documented for the genus. The fine brush-like teeth of the inferior mouth are precisely adapted for this mode of feeding, allowing the fish to rasp the thin biofilm layer from plant stems, wood, smooth rock, and glass surfaces.

In the aquarium, Farlowella martini requires a well-established tank with ample grazing surfaces: driftwood with algal and bacterial films, broad-leaved plants (Echinodorus, Anubias), and areas of the glass where green algae are permitted to grow. Supplementary foods should be plant-based and slow-sinking — algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), or spinach placed flat on a surface where the fish can access them at its own slow pace. High-protein or fast-sinking foods are of limited value and should not dominate the diet.

Mating

No courtship observations specific to Farlowella martini are documented in the available literature. Reproductive behaviour in the genus — based on documented accounts from F. acus and other more commonly kept twig catfishes — follows a pattern in which males become somewhat more active and closely attend receptive females, with the male's snout near the female's flank as he accompanies her along flat surfaces.

Males in breeding condition are recognisable by more prominent snout odontodes relative to their normal state. Conditioning adults with varied plant-based foods, maintaining clean and stable water, and providing periodic seasonal cues through water-change routines are the practical steps recommended before expecting reproductive behaviour. Given the rarity of F. martini in captivity, any observed mating behaviour would represent novel data for the species.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Farlowella martini are present in the available literature. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus, the expected pattern is adhesive egg deposition on a flat clean surface — aquarium glass is the most frequently used site in captive accounts of related species — followed by paternal guarding and fanning of the egg mass. The male tends the clutch through an incubation period of approximately one week at temperatures around 79–82 °F, after which free-living fry emerge already capable of clinging to surfaces and grazing biofilm.

Farlowella martini's rarity in the hobby means that captive breeding accounts are essentially absent. FishBase records a medium resilience and a minimum population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years for the species — population parameters that suggest moderate susceptibility to population decline and slow recovery capacity if populations are reduced. Documentation of captive breeding, should it occur, would be of scientific and conservation interest.

In the aquarium

Farlowella martini is very rarely seen in the trade and is not a species hobbyists are likely to encounter except through specialist sources or by chance in mixed loricariid imports from Venezuela. Husbandry requirements are those shared by all Farlowella: clean, well-oxygenated water in a mature, established tank; a long, shallow footprint; ample biofilm-coated surfaces for grazing; and gentle, non-competitive tankmates.

Temperature in the range of 73–82 °F and neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.5–7.4) are appropriate starting points based on the Caribbean coastal river environment, though specific water-chemistry preferences are undocumented. The species is benthic and demersal, spending most time motionless on flat surfaces — the long twig-like body offers little hydrodynamic resistance and requires no strong current. Dissolved oxygen must be kept high; stagnant or poorly circulated water is not tolerated.

The elongate rostrum and delicate bony scutes are vulnerable to physical damage. Tanks with sharp decor, aggressive or nippy tankmates, or strong suction near intake pipes can injure the fish. A soft substrate or bare bottom beneath the fish's preferred resting areas is preferable. Peaceful small tetras, Corydoras catfishes, and calm mid-water species are the most suitable companions.

Given the species' Not Evaluated IUCN status and its restricted Venezuelan coastal range, any hobbyist keeping F. martini should endeavour to document husbandry and any breeding attempts, contributing to the limited knowledge base for this understudied species.

This Not Evaluated (NE) status reflects a gap in assessment coverage rather than confirmed absence of concern — the species' restricted distribution in Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela, a region that has experienced substantial habitat modification through urbanisation, agriculture, and water abstraction, means that potential threats exist even without formal documentation.

The Caribbean coastal rivers of Venezuela (Aragua, Carabobo, and neighbouring states) are among the most heavily human-influenced watersheds in the country, draining densely populated and intensively farmed coastal lowlands. Sedimentation from agricultural runoff, pollution from urban areas and industry, and reduced riparian vegetation all degrade the clean, biofilm-rich shallow-water habitat on which Farlowella depend. For a species with moderate population resilience and slow recovery time (minimum doubling time 1.4–4.4 years), localised population loss could take years to reverse even if habitat conditions improved.

A formal IUCN assessment incorporating current distribution data and threat analysis would provide a clearer conservation picture. Until such an assessment is conducted, precautionary collection limits and habitat monitoring in the species' known range rivers are advisable.
