Taxonomy & naming
Harttia panara was described in 2018 by Oyakawa, Fichberg and Rapp Py-Daniel as part of a revision and expansion of the Xingu-basin Harttia, a group of rheophilic (current-loving) whiptail catfishes. It is recognised as a valid species by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and is placed in the subfamily Loricariinae.
The genus name honours Charles Frederick Hartt (1840–1878), the Canadian-born naturalist of the Thayer Expedition to Brazil. The species epithet honours the Panará — also known historically as the Kreen-Akarore — the Indigenous people of the Xingu region, a naming choice that ties the fish to the human as well as the ecological landscape of its home river.
Morphology
Harttia panara reaches about 4 in standard length. It shows the diagnostic Loricariinae form: a strongly depressed head and body, a ventral suckermouth, and a long, tapering caudal peduncle. The body is sheathed in the bony plates characteristic of the armoured catfishes, and the flattened profile is an adaptation to life pressed against rock in fast water.
The species was distinguished from its Xingu congeners in the 2018 description on the basis of meristic and morphological characters; full details of live coloration are given in that work. No separate published account of sexual dimorphism is available for this species, though Harttia males generally develop enlarged odontodes on the head and pectoral spines.
Habitat
Harttia panara is known from the Xingu River basin in Brazil, where it occupies the rheophilic habitats — rapids and swift, rocky channels — favoured by the Xingu Harttia group. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of warm, clear, fast-flowing water over rock.
The Xingu's clearwater rapids are a distinctive and demanding environment: well-oxygenated, low in suspended sediment, and structurally complex. Specialised rheophilic fishes such as this one cling to and shelter among rock in the current. No water-chemistry figures specific to H. panara have been published beyond this general habitat characterisation.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study of Harttia panara has been published. As a benthic loricariine of rocky rapids, it is presumed to graze biofilm — algae, diatoms, detritus, and associated micro-invertebrates — from hard substrates using its ventral suckermouth, in the manner typical of the subfamily.
Mating
No mating or courtship behaviour has been documented for Harttia panara. In the genus generally, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes and defend spawning sites, but no observations specific to this species exist in the published literature.
Breeding
There are no published breeding records for Harttia panara. Loricariinae are typically substrate egg-layers exhibiting paternal care, with the male guarding the eggs, but no data has been published confirming the reproductive mode or fecundity of this species.
In the aquarium
Harttia panara is not established in the aquarium trade and has no documented husbandry record. As a rheophilic clearwater rapids fish, it would demand the most exacting conditions of its group — pristine, strongly oxygenated water with vigorous flow, a rocky substrate, and stable warm temperatures. It is best treated as a species of scientific and conservation interest rather than a hobby fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Harttia panara as Endangered in 2020. Its restriction to the rheophilic rapids of the Xingu River places it squarely in the path of the basin's principal threat: the alteration of flow regimes by large hydroelectric development, most notably the Belo Monte dam complex, which has dewatered and impounded stretches of the rapids on which clearwater specialists depend. Loss and modification of these swift-water habitats is the central conservation concern for the species; its narrow ecological requirements leave little margin for the hydrological changes now reshaping the Xingu.
