Pseudacanthicus pirarara is the scarlet cactus pleco — the species behind L025, one of the most iconic L-numbers in the aquarium hobby, known since the early 1990s for the vivid orange-red to scarlet colouration of its fin margins and spines against a dark, heavily armoured body bristling with hypertrophied odontodes. Formally named only in 2016 by Chamon & Sousa from the Rio Xingu, it spent more than two decades in trade as a pre-description L-number while hobbyists and breeders steadily refined its husbandry. A member of the Acanthicus clade — the 'cactus plecos' — it is a carnivore with a body plan that has changed little from its Gondwanan loricariid ancestors, armed with keeled scute rows, elongate curved teeth, and formidable spines that make it as much a defensive weapon as a decorative fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudacanthicus pirarara was formally described by Cláudio C. Chamon and Telton C. Sousa in 2016 in the Journal of Fish Biology (volume 90, number 1, pages 2 et seq.), with the type locality given as Pedral do Caitucá, Rio Xingu, Senador José Porfírio, Pará State, Brazil (3°34′24″S, 51°51′33″W). The fish had circulated in European and North American aquarium markets as Pseudacanthicus sp. L025 from at least the early 1990s, and the pre-description hobby name 'scarlet cactus pleco' had been widely established before the scientific name appeared. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination Pseudacanthicus pirarara Chamon & Sousa, 2016; the authority is non-parenthetical.

The genus Pseudacanthicus belongs to the Acanthicus clade within tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). Members of the clade are distinguished from other loricariids by: longitudinal rows of keeled odontodes along the body sides; eight or more dorsal-fin rays; seven to eight infraorbitals; five anal-fin branched rays; and hypertrophied odontodes along the snout margin. Within the clade, Pseudacanthicus is differentiated from Acanthicus by the presence of two small plates in the posterior area of the compound pterotic and by the narrow premaxillae bearing a small number of elongate, curved teeth.

The epithet pirarara is a Tupi-Guaraní word widely used in Brazilian Portuguese as a common name for various red-finned or red-tinted river fish; here it references the vivid scarlet-orange colouration of the fin margins that makes this species unmistakable.

Morphology

Pseudacanthicus pirarara is a large pleco: PlanetCatfish records a maximum of 17.5 in SL, while FishBase lists 16 in TL and 950 g — in practice, well-fed adults in large aquaria reach 14–17.5 in TL and are broad, muscular animals. The body is strongly armoured with bony scutes bearing prominent keeled odontodes arranged in regular longitudinal rows, giving the flanks a ridged, 'cactus-spine' texture that is the origin of the common name. The dorsal profile is convex; the head is broad and slightly depressed, bearing the hypertrophied odontodes on the snout margin that are diagnostic for the Acanthicus clade.

Base body colour is dark grey to brown or near-black, typically uniform in adults. The fins are the defining feature: dorsal, caudal, pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins carry vivid orange-red to scarlet margins and fin-ray tips in young adults and conditioned specimens. The intensity of red colouration can vary with condition, diet, and age; heavily stressed or poorly nourished fish show duller fin colour. The pectoral spines are long and stout, bearing rows of fine odontodes along their posterior edges that can lock out when the fish is threatened — a defence mechanism that can injure nets and hands.

Sexual dimorphism is present. Males develop more elaborate odontodes on the pectoral-fin rays and interopercular region than females, particularly visible in breeding condition. Females are broader through the abdomen and the genital papilla differs in shape; female odontode development is less elaborate.

Habitat

Pseudacanthicus pirarara is a Rio Xingu endemic — the type locality and all confirmed records are from the Xingu drainage in Pará State, Brazil. The Xingu is one of the most biodiverse loricariid rivers in the world: a clearwater river that flows north from the Brazilian Shield over ancient Precambrian bedrock, producing the exceptional system of granite rapids, boulder fields, and shallow rocky outcrops (pedrais) that host hundreds of endemic armoured catfish species.

The lower and middle Xingu, where P. pirarara is recorded, is characterised by warm, clear to slightly tannin-stained water, pH 6.0–7.4 (PlanetCatfish), and temperatures of 75–79 °F in the main channel. The rocky substrate provides an abundance of crevices, boulder-caves, and overhangs that the fish uses for shelter and spawning. Dissolved oxygen is high in the rapids sections. The species is typically collected from larger boulder formations and cave systems at depth rather than the shallowest rapids habitats preferred by some of the smaller Xingu endemics.

The Belo Monte dam complex, the major infrastructure project on the lower Xingu operational since 2016, has permanently altered flow regimes and inundated sections of rocky-rapid habitat in the middle Xingu — the core range of this species. The impact on wild P. pirarara populations has not been quantified but is potentially severe.

Feeding

Pseudacanthicus pirarara is a carnivore, not an herbivore or wood-eater, and its dietary requirements in captivity reflect this. In the wild, the elongate, curved teeth are suited to seizing invertebrates — large aquatic insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and carrion — from rock crevices and boulder faces in the fast-flowing Xingu. The limited stomach-content data available for Pseudacanthicus species consistently show animal matter dominance, with algae and detritus as minor components.

PlanetCatfish notes that in the aquarium, prawns and chopped mussel are among the favoured foods and promote healthy growth; high-quality sinking pellet foods are well accepted and produce less waste than wet invertebrate foods. A small vegetable component (blanched courgette, spinach, algae wafer) rounds out the diet and is important for nutritional balance, though P. pirarara will preferentially consume protein-rich foods when given a choice.

Feeding should not be excessive: large carnivorous plecos are capable of gorging and producing very large amounts of nitrogenous waste, which rapidly degrades water quality in enclosed systems. Feeding two to three times per week with high-quality prepared foods and occasional invertebrate supplements is preferable to daily overfeeding. The fish is primarily nocturnal and will feed most actively after lights-out.

Mating

Courtship in Pseudacanthicus pirarara has been observed by aquarium keepers and is documented in the PlanetCatfish breeding article 'Spawning Pseudacanthicus sp. L025, the scarlet cactus pleco.' Males are territorial and establish dominance over cave sites long before spawning occurs. In a tank with suitable structure, a dominant male will occupy and patrol a central cave or crevice, displaying interopercular and snout odontodes toward rival males. The bright fin colouration intensifies in breeding-conditioned males, particularly the scarlet dorsal and caudal margins.

Temptation with Pseudacanthicus is to house them with other large 'tough' loricariids, but PlanetCatfish warns that despite their formidable armour, individuals can be harassed and stressed by faster-moving or more aggressive species. Providing adequate territory structure (separate caves out of visual contact, physical barriers of stone and wood) reduces stress-related inhibition of reproductive behaviour.

A receptive female, recognisable by her broader abdomen and less elaborate odontodes, will enter the male's cave after a period of mutual investigation; spawning occurs inside. The female's role ends at egg deposition; paternal care follows. Long sight lines in the tank between adults can trigger unnecessary aggression and should be broken by aquascape structure.

Breeding

Pseudacanthicus pirarara has been bred in captivity, and the event is documented through PlanetCatfish's breeding report system (two registered reports) and the associated Shane's World article on spawning L025. This represents meaningful progress for a large, specialist loricariid, and the photographic series on PlanetCatfish documenting fry development day-by-day from 6 days to 94 days post-hatching is among the most comprehensive early-life documentation for any Pseudacanthicus species.

The breeding mode is cave-spawning with paternal egg care. The male deposits the clutch on the cave interior and broods the eggs, fanning them with his fins to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Fry hatch with a large yolk sac and are guarded by the male in or near the cave entrance until the yolk is absorbed; at this point they begin rasping biofilm and eventually accept fine invertebrate and particulate foods.

Successful breeding has been associated with: a dedicated cave (ceramic cave tube or PVC section of appropriate internal diameter) that the male can fully occupy; pristine water quality with very low nitrate and high dissolved oxygen; temperature in the upper range of tolerance (77–79 °F); and conditioning of adults on high-quality protein-rich foods for several weeks before the intended spawning period. Larger tanks with water changes of 25–40 % weekly provide the near-constant water quality the species requires.

In the aquarium

Pseudacanthicus pirarara is a fish for experienced keepers with appropriately large aquaria. A single adult requires a minimum tank of 90–105 US gal; a breeding pair requires 160 US gal or more, with extensive structural complexity providing separate territories. The fish grows at a moderate rate in good conditions and can reach 12 in TL within two to three years.

The most critical parameter is dissolved oxygen: the Xingu-origin adaptation to highly oxygenated fast water means this species will suffer in poorly aerated tanks. A sump or high-turnover canister filter directed across the water surface, or a spray bar, is essential. Temperature 75–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.4, and low to moderate hardness reflect the Xingu habitat; the species is less rigid in its water chemistry requirements than some Xingu endemics but should not be placed in warm, stagnant, or organically loaded water.

PlanetCatfish cautions that Pseudacanthicus species should not be confused with omnivorous or vegetarian large plecos (Panaque, Pterygoplichthys) in terms of tankmate selection. Despite their armour, they can be intimidated by faster-moving, bolder fish of similar size. Suitable tankmates include large, robust South American fish (large cichlids in separated territory, other large loricariids in a spacious tank) rather than bruising mid-water predators.

The pectoral spines are a real handling hazard: the locking spine mechanism can cause painful punctures and net damage. Use a rigid container for fish transfer rather than a soft-mesh net. The spines are also a common site of fungal infection after injury; maintain excellent water quality and isolate injured fish for treatment.

Conservation

Pseudacanthicus pirarara has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List as of the species' valid description date, and FishBase and PlanetCatfish both record its IUCN status as Not Evaluated. The formal scientific name was only established in 2016, which has delayed the assessment process. However, the conservation context is concerning: the species is a Rio Xingu endemic with what is inferred to be a limited natural range, all of it in a river system that has undergone dramatic anthropogenic modification.

The lower and middle Xingu — the core of the species' range — was fundamentally altered by the Belo Monte dam project. Completed between 2016 and 2019, the project inundated approximately 311 mi² of river and floodplain, including extensive rocky rapids habitat. The Volta Grande do Xingu section, which hosted extraordinary loricariid diversity, was the hardest-hit area. While the precise impact on P. pirarara populations is unquantified, the loss or degradation of boulder-cave habitat over tens of kilometres of river represents a serious range reduction.

In the aquarium trade, L025 remains in demand, and wild collection from the Xingu for export continues under Brazilian IBAMA licensing, with supply likely reduced since Belo Monte altered access and populations. Captive breeding, while achieved, is not yet routine. Given the scale of habitat change, a formal IUCN assessment when it occurs is likely to place P. pirarara in a threatened category.
