Taxonomy & naming
Pterygoplichthys xinguensis was described by Claude Weber in 1991, originally placed in the genus Glyptoperichthys as Glyptoperichthys xinguensis. Subsequent revision recognised the synonymy of Glyptoperichthys with Pterygoplichthys, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Pterygoplichthys xinguensis (C. Weber, 1991), with Glyptoperichthys xinguensis Weber, 1991 treated as a junior synonym.
The type locality is the Rio Fresco near the village of Aldeio Gorotire, within the Rio Xingu basin, Pará State, Brazil — the middle Xingu, south of the Kayapó indigenous territory. The species is assigned the hobbyist code L083 in the DATZ L-number system, which was applied when the fish first appeared in the European aquarium trade in the early 1990s.
Pterygoplichthys is a genus of large, armoured sailfin plecos within the tribe Hypostomini of subfamily Hypostominae. The genus includes several species notorious as invasive aliens in warm freshwaters of Asia, North America, and elsewhere — introduced through release of unwanted aquarium fish. Pterygoplichthys xinguensis is currently known only from the Xingu basin and is not established as an invasive outside its native range.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 15 in and a maximum weight of 580 g for Pterygoplichthys xinguensis — a substantial fish considerably larger than the bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus) that dominate the hobby. Like other Pterygoplichthys, adults are fully armoured in bony scutes along the body and bear the large, sail-like dorsal fin with many rays that gives the genus its common name. The pectoral fins are broad and paddle-like; the ventral disc mouth is equipped with fine teeth for scraping algae and biofilm.
Coloration is dark — brown to near-black ground colour — overlaid with small, pale cream or whitish spots scattered across the body and fins. This pattern is the key visible distinction from the superficially similar Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps (L165), which displays a bold reticulated or 'leopard' pattern of larger, interconnected pale markings on a darker background. The spots of P. xinguensis are smaller and more evenly scattered; in P. gibbiceps the pattern forms broader, more irregular blotches. Both species occur in the Xingu basin, and the two are regularly conflated in trade where fish may be sold under the wrong L-number or common name.
Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species. As in other Pterygoplichthys, males tend to be slightly slimmer in body profile than females; breeding males may develop more pronounced odontodes on the pectoral-fin spines. Reliable external sexing is difficult outside the breeding season.
Habitat
Pterygoplichthys xinguensis is endemic to the Xingu River basin in Pará State, Brazil. The Xingu is one of the major right-bank tributaries of the Amazon, draining the central Brazilian Shield. Its lower and middle reaches are characterised by an extraordinary complex of rapids, rock outcrops, and archipelagos — habitats that have driven the evolution of a highly endemic fish fauna found nowhere else on Earth.
The type locality on the Rio Fresco sits in the middle Xingu drainage. The Xingu mixes clear water from the Shield uplands with some blackwater influence; typical water conditions in the middle and lower Xingu are warm (approximately 79–86 °F), with a pH in the range of approximately 6.5–7.5. The river is typically well-oxygenated in the rapids sections, with lower oxygen in marginal backwaters.
Like other large Pterygoplichthys, this species is a demersal benthic fish, inhabiting bottom substrates including rock surfaces, woody debris, and sandy areas where it rasps algae and biofilm. Its facultative air-breathing capability, shared with many loricariids, allows it to survive in marginal hypoxic conditions.
Feeding
Pterygoplichthys xinguensis feeds in the manner typical of the genus: it is primarily a herbivore and aufwuchs grazer, using its ventral suckermouth to rasp algae and the associated biofilm community (periphyton) from the surfaces of submerged rock and wood. The fine, spatulate teeth are well suited to this mode of feeding. In addition to algae, the gut contents of Pterygoplichthys species typically include fine sediment, detritus, and the diatoms and organic particles embedded in biofilm.
In an aquarium context, P. xinguensis requires a diet dominated by plant-based foods: spirulina wafers, algae discs, blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, and peas, and the natural algae that accumulate on tank glass and décor. Given its large adult size, it has a correspondingly large appetite and produces significant waste output. Supplementary feeding with sinking prepared foods and occasional meaty items is accepted but the diet should not be protein-heavy.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Pterygoplichthys xinguensis has not been specifically documented in the scientific literature. The following is based on the well-studied genus-level reproductive strategy.
Pterygoplichthys species are burrowing spawners in the wild: males excavate tunnels into riverbank substrate, digging horizontal galleries that serve as nest chambers. Tunnel construction is energetically demanding and represents significant investment; males compete for and defend burrow sites. Females visit the burrow, deposit their eggs within the tunnel, and the male takes over exclusive care of the clutch.
In the aquarium, the scale of burrowing behaviour and the adult size of P. xinguensis (up to 15 in) mean that breeding is rarely achieved in typical home aquaria — the fish and its reproductive requirements outstrip what most aquarium setups can accommodate.
Breeding
Pterygoplichthys xinguensis, like its larger relatives in the genus, is a burrow-spawner with paternal brood care. In their natural habitat, males excavate riverside tunnel nests into muddy or sandy banks during the breeding season, timing reproduction to the river's flood cycle. Eggs are deposited within the tunnel and the male guards and aerates the clutch until hatching.
No confirmed aquarium breeding records for P. xinguensis are known to this author. The large adult size and the requirement for burrow-nesting make captive breeding impractical without specialist facilities — a contrast with the smaller, cave-spawning Ancistrus species that breed reliably in standard home aquaria. Large public aquaria or specialist large-tank keepers would be the most likely setting for any future captive breeding attempt.
In the aquarium
Pterygoplichthys xinguensis reaches up to 15 in total length — a size that demands serious consideration before purchase. This is not a fish for a standard community aquarium. A single adult requires a tank of at minimum 80 US gal, with robust filtration capable of handling the substantial waste output of a large, actively feeding pleco. Tanks housing adults need frequent large water changes and high turnover rates to maintain water quality.
The species is imported occasionally under the L083 designation. Buyers should be aware of the trade confusion with L165 (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps): both species have been sold under each other's L-number, and positive identification requires attention to colour pattern — the small, scattered spots of P. xinguensis versus the bold reticulated markings of P. gibbiceps. Both species are from the Xingu basin and have broadly similar care requirements, but accurate identification matters for any effort to track species provenance.
Water should reflect Xingu basin conditions: temperature 79–86 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and good oxygenation. Driftwood, flat rock surfaces, and cave-like shelters suit the species' habitat preferences. P. xinguensis is generally not aggressive toward dissimilar tankmates but is territorial with conspecifics and other large plecos competing for the same benthic space and shelter sites. It is not a suitable tankmate for small, slow-moving bottom-dwellers.
Given the ongoing threats to the Xingu River and its endemic fauna, purchasing wild-caught P. xinguensis contributes to demand for Xingu fish at a particularly sensitive time for that ecosystem.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys xinguensis as Least Concern in 2018. This assessment pre-dates the full operational impact of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex on the middle and lower Xingu — a project that has dramatically altered flow regimes, water temperature, and sediment dynamics in the species' native range.
The Xingu basin hosts one of the most endemic freshwater fish faunas on the planet, and several Xingu endemics have suffered significant population declines following dam construction. Pterygoplichthys xinguensis is a large, mobile, generalist feeder that may be more resilient to altered habitat conditions than highly habitat-specialised endemics such as Hypancistrus zebra (L046). Nevertheless, the disruption of natural flood pulse dynamics and the alteration of riverbank structure that facilitates burrow-nesting could affect reproductive success. Continued monitoring of Xingu loricariid populations as the post-dam ecosystem settles into a new state is important for any future reassessment.
