Described from swift rocky riffles in the heart of Brazil's Cerrado savanna, Hemiancistrus cerrado is a compact armoured catfish whose name honours one of the world's most biologically rich — and most threatened — tropical biomes. Known from a handful of Araguaia tributaries in Goiás state, it represents the kind of range-restricted, biotope-specialist species that quietly disappears when riffle habitats are dammed or deforested before science has had time to learn much about them.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiancistrus cerrado was formally described by de Souza, Melo, Chamon and Armbruster in 2008 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 6, number 3, pages 419–424). The holotype, MZUSP 89078, was collected from the rio do Bugre, a tributary of the rio Araguaia in Goiás state, Brazil. Paratypes are held at Auburn University Museum of Natural History (AUM 45427) and the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP).

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hemiancistrus cerrado as a valid species within subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini. The species was diagnosed from its congeners H. megalopteryx and H. punctulatus principally by a larger internarial width (15.9–21.1% of head length, versus 11.2–14.0% in H. megalopteryx) and a proportionally longer adipose-fin spine (9.4–13.6% of standard length, versus 7.1–8.7% in H. megalopteryx).

The specific epithet cerrado is a noun used in apposition and refers directly to the Cerrado, the vast tropical savanna biome of central Brazil within which the species' known range falls. The Cerrado is the most biodiverse savanna on Earth and a global biodiversity hotspot recognised for its exceptional levels of endemism across vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL), placing H. cerrado at the larger end of the Hemiancistrus size range. The body follows the typical loricariid plan: dorsoventrally flattened and encased in overlapping bony scutes, with the ventral surface largely naked skin used for attachment to hard substrates.

The dorsal fin contains two spines and seven soft rays; the anal fin has one spine and four soft rays — fin counts consistent with other members of the genus. The relatively wide internarial distance and elongated adipose-fin spine are the key diagnostic proportions used to separate this species from its closest relatives.

Sexual dimorphism in Hemiancistrus generally involves males developing interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and additional odontodes along the pectoral-fin spine during the breeding season; females in breeding condition tend to be broader-bodied. Whether these dimorphic traits are fully expressed in H. cerrado has not been documented in the available literature, though the pattern is broadly consistent across Hypostominae. The species is a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration during periods of low dissolved oxygen — an adaptation of value in seasonally variable streams.

Habitat

Hemiancistrus cerrado is known from second-order streams in the Cerrado of Goiás state, central Brazil: specifically from the rio do Bugre, rio Vermelho, and probably the rio do Peixe, all tributaries of the rio Araguaia within the upper Tocantins basin. These streams share a characteristic riffle-dominated structure, with swift currents passing over rocky substrates — the kind of swift, oxygen-rich microhabitat that armoured catfishes with strong sucker mouths are well adapted to exploit.

The Cerrado is a strongly seasonal biome. Stream discharge, temperature, and chemistry fluctuate considerably between the wet season (roughly October–March) and the dry season (April–September), when smaller tributaries may drop substantially in volume and water temperatures can rise. These seasonal cycles likely influence reproductive timing and feeding behaviour, as they do in related species across the Tocantins and Araguaia systems.

Exact water chemistry parameters for the collection localities of H. cerrado have not been published. Based on the character of Cerrado streams in Goiás and related Hemiancistrus habitats, the water is likely near neutral to mildly acidic (pH approximately 6.5–7.5) and moderately warm (75–82 °F), with lower conductivity than Andean whitewater systems.

Feeding

Like other members of Hypostominae from fast-flowing rocky streams, H. cerrado is presumed to feed primarily on biofilm, aufwuchs, and periphyton — the complex community of algae, bacteria, diatoms, and fine organic matter that colonises the surfaces of rocks and submerged wood in riffles. The ventral sucker mouth, adapted for firm attachment to current-swept substrate, is well suited to this grazing lifestyle.

No specific dietary study exists for this species. Based on its riffle habitat and loricariid morphology, a diet centred on algae scraping and biofilm grazing is the most defensible inference. In the aquarium, Hemiancistrus in this ecological guild typically accept high-quality algae wafers, sinking spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), and occasional invertebrate supplements. Driftwood in the aquarium provides both a surface for biofilm colonisation and a minor dietary supplement.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in H. cerrado has not been documented in captivity or described from field observations in the available literature. Based on patterns established across Hypostominae, males of loricariids from swift-water riffle habitats typically defend crevice or cave sites, display interopercular odontodes during courtship, and patrol territories against rival males.

Given the rocky riffle microhabitat of this species, natural spawning sites likely include tight crevices beneath submerged boulders or in interstitial spaces in the riverbed, where current velocity is reduced and eggs can be guarded without being swept away. More specific information awaits either field study or captive breeding records.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Hemiancistrus cerrado has been documented in the available literature, and the species is not known in the ornamental trade to any significant degree. Based on its placement within Hypostominae, it is almost certainly a cave spawner in which the male guards the clutch — the near-universal reproductive pattern in this subfamily.

Egg morphology, clutch size, incubation period, and fry development are undescribed for this species. Aquarists working with related Hemiancistrus species report moderately sized clutches of adhesive eggs deposited in cave-like structures, with the male fanning and guarding until the fry disperse. For H. cerrado specifically, data are sparse and these details should not be assumed without direct observation.

In the aquarium

Hemiancistrus cerrado is not established in the hobby and is seldom if ever available through the ornamental trade. Its limited known range, restricted to a handful of Cerrado tributaries in Goiás state, means it is unlikely to be a regular import.

For the rare aquarist who obtains this species, its habitat gives clear guidance: a current-rich setup with a strong return flow, rounded river stones, smooth slate or similar flat rocks for attachment, and clean well-oxygenated water is appropriate. Target parameters based on Cerrado stream analogues would be temperature 75–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5. Given its maximum size of around 6.5 in SL, a tank of at least 40–55 US gal would be needed to house adults comfortably with adequate territory.

Feeding should emphasise biofilm-rich surfaces and algae-based foods: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables. Supplementary driftwood is advisable. The species is likely peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates but may be territorial with other bottom-dwelling loricariids of similar size and habit.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiancistrus cerrado as Least Concern in November 2018. At the time of assessment, the species was not considered to be in decline at a rate qualifying for a threatened category, and no immediate major threats were identified sufficient to trigger uplisting.

Nonetheless, the Cerrado biome that gives this species its name is one of the most threatened savanna ecosystems on Earth: an estimated 50% or more of the original Cerrado has been converted to agriculture, principally soy cultivation and cattle ranching, and stream degradation through sedimentation, riparian clearing, and small-scale damming is widespread in Goiás. Species restricted to a small number of second-order streams in a heavily altered biome are inherently vulnerable to localised events. Population data and trend information for H. cerrado remain sparse; any reassessment would benefit from systematic survey work across its known and potential range in the Araguaia tributaries.
