Taxonomy & naming
Hypostomus krishnamurtii was formally described by Zawadzki, Penido and Lucinda in 2020 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (article IEF-1153, published online 26 June 2020; DOI: 10.23788/IEF-1153). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid within the genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803, which remains the largest genus in the family Loricariidae.
The species was collected from the medium and upper Rio Tocantins basin in Goiás state, central Brazil — a major South American river system draining into the Amazon. The type locality is Rio Uru, a tributary of Rio das Almas, near Heitoraí, Goiás (15°47'45"S, 49°50'18"W).
Hypostomus is placed within subfamily Hypostominae, the species-richest subfamily of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus contains well over 130 valid species and continues to grow as Neotropical river systems are more thoroughly surveyed. H. krishnamurtii was described as part of a broader wave of new loricariid species named from Brazilian river basins in the 2010s and 2020s.
The species epithet honours Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895–1986), the Indian philosopher and educator whose lifelong work focused on human advancement and educational reform. According to the ETYFish Project, Zawadzki has named a series of Hypostomus species after progressive philosophers and educators — a pattern of tribute naming with no morphological relevance to the fish itself.
Morphology
Formal morphological data for H. krishnamurtii beyond the original description is sparse in the available literature. As a member of the genus Hypostomus, it carries the characteristic loricariid body plan: a depressed, heavily armoured head and trunk covered with rows of overlapping odontode-bearing scutes, a ventral suctorial mouth adapted for grazing on submerged surfaces, and a plated abdomen.
The original description has not been widely reproduced in accessible secondary sources, so specific meristic data — plate counts, tooth numbers, and fin-ray counts — cannot be stated here without risk of error. Size data are also absent from available sources; maximum standard length is not documented in the secondary literature consulted. The distribution in a medium-altitude Cerrado tributary of the upper Tocantins suggests a moderately built rheophilic species adapted to rocky or cobbled substrates in clear or slightly turbid water, as is typical for many Hypostomus from upland Brazilian drainages, but this is inferred from biogeographic context rather than direct morphological description.
Habitat
The type locality, Rio Uru near Heitoraí, is a tributary of Rio das Almas within the upper Tocantins drainage in the Cerrado biome of central Goiás. The Cerrado is Brazil's vast tropical savanna, characterised by pronounced dry and wet seasons: rivers can drop significantly during the dry season (May–September) and rise rapidly with the onset of rains in October, bringing cooler, softer, and more oxygenated conditions.
The reported distribution encompasses the medium and upper Tocantins basin, which includes rivers flowing through rocky Cerrado uplands and transition zones. Waters in this region are typically oligotrophic to mesotrophic, with moderate to low mineral content and slightly acidic to neutral pH values — though precise water chemistry data for this species' collection sites are not available in the secondary literature.
Hypostomus species in comparable upland Tocantins tributaries typically occupy rocky substrates in moderate current, where they graze biofilm from rock surfaces and submerged wood. Whether H. krishnamurtii favours a particular microhabitat type within this range has not been documented.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to H. krishnamurtii have been published. By genus, Hypostomus species are predominantly aufwuchs and biofilm grazers, using the ventrally positioned suctorial mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, fine detritus, and associated microfauna from hard substrates. Unlike the wood-specialised Panaque and Panaqolus lineages within Hypostominae, most Hypostomus feed primarily on periphyton rather than ingesting wood fibre in substantial quantities.
In the aquarium, Hypostomus species are generally fed on algae-based wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), supplemented with a small proportion of meaty foods. Without direct knowledge of H. krishnamurtii's diet, these broad loricariid husbandry norms are the best available guide — though this species is not documented in the aquarium hobby.
Mating
Mating behaviour in H. krishnamurtii has not been described. Across the genus Hypostomus, sexual dimorphism is typically subtle in non-breeding condition, with breeding males often developing more pronounced interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and additional odontodes on the pectoral spines. Males in many Hypostomus species are territorial around nest sites, which are usually cavities excavated in riverbanks or in submerged wood.
No field observations or aquarium reports of courtship behaviour in this species are available.
Breeding
Breeding in H. krishnamurtii has not been documented in either the scientific literature or the aquarium hobby. Hypostomus species are generally cave or cavity spawners in which the male guards the clutch until the fry disperse, a pattern that is broadly consistent across Loricariidae. Beyond this phylogenetic inference, no species-specific breeding data can be stated.
In the aquarium
Hypostomus krishnamurtii is not documented in the aquarium hobby, and no captive husbandry notes have been published. It is not known to be present in the ornamental fish trade.
Were specimens to become available, standard husbandry for a Hypostomus from an upland Cerrado tributary would apply as a baseline: well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, rocky or mixed substrate, driftwood for cover, and a diet built around biofilm and algae-based supplementary foods. Water parameters consistent with Cerrado rivers — temperature roughly 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, low to moderate hardness — would be a reasonable starting point, though these figures are inferred from the biogeography rather than derived from husbandry records for this species.
Conservation
Hypostomus krishnamurtii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2020 from a relatively restricted area of the upper and medium Tocantins basin, it is too recently described to have undergone formal assessment under IUCN criteria.
The Tocantins–Araguaia system faces significant anthropogenic pressure: large-scale hydroelectric development (including the Tucuruí Dam, one of the world's largest), agricultural expansion across the Cerrado, and associated sedimentation and water quality changes. The upper Tocantins tributaries where H. krishnamurtii occurs are somewhat buffered from the largest dam impacts, but Cerrado river systems are under sustained pressure from soy and cattle agriculture. The conservation status of this species cannot be evaluated with the available data.
