A uniformly dark, sooty-coloured pleco from the upper Uruguay River basin of southern Brazil, Hemiancistrus fuliginosus is among the southernmost loricariids recorded in that drainage — a subtly attractive species that rewards keepers who appreciate understated colouration and the geographical novelty of a subtropical, fast-water catfish.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiancistrus fuliginosus was formally described by Cardoso and Malabarba in 1999 in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 12, pp. 148, Figs. 5–6), from type material collected at Rio Jacutinga, on the road between Seara and Concórdia (BR-283), municipality of Concórdia, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (approximately 27°10'S, 52°09'W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this combination as valid with no synonyms.

The genus name Hemiancistrus is a compound of the Greek hemi (half) and agkistron (hook), alluding to the shared but partial resemblance to Ancistrus — these fish retain some features of that genus while lacking others, most notably the evertible interopercular plates that characterise most Ancistrini. The placement of Hemiancistrus within Hypostominae has been supported by morphological phylogenetic analyses, though the genus is not entirely monophyletic and ongoing revisions continue to refine its boundaries. The species epithet fuliginosus is Latin for 'sooty' or 'covered in soot', a direct reference to the uniformly dark body colouration that defines this species.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL) — a moderately sized loricariid. The body is encased in the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of the family, and the overall profile is typical of a benthic scraper: flattened ventrally, with a broad head and subterminal mouth equipped for rasping substrate biofilm and attached algae.

The colouration is the species' most distinctive field mark: the entire body and fins are a deep, uniform dark brown to near-black — the fuliginous (sooty) tone that gives the species its name. There is no strong spotting or banding pattern; specimens may show very faint lighter mottling at close range, but the overall impression is of a uniformly melanistic pleco. Fins share the dark ground colour.

Hemiancistrus fuliginosus lacks the evertible cheek plates present in most Ancistrini, a feature that informed its assignment to Hemiancistrus rather than related genera. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in published literature for this species; as in many loricariids, breeding males in related species develop odontode growth on the snout and operculum, but no confirmed data exists for fuliginosus specifically.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the upper Uruguay River basin in southern Brazil — specifically the sub-basins of the Jacutinga, Pelotas, and upper Uruguai (La Plata drainage), spanning parts of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states. This is one of the southernmost distributions recorded for the genus, placing the species in a subtropical rather than tropical climatic zone.

The type locality (Rio Jacutinga near Concórdia, Santa Catarina) is a clear, rocky upland stream with seasonal temperature variation — cooler winters are a feature of the southern Brazilian highland environment. The genus Hemiancistrus is associated with hard, rocky substrates and clear, well-oxygenated water in moderate to fast current. The subtropical latitude means this species likely tolerates lower temperatures than most Amazonian loricariids.

Feeding

Hemiancistrus fuliginosus, like other members of its genus, is presumed to be a biofilm and periphyton grazer, using its subterminal rasping mouth to scrape algal films, diatoms, and associated detritus from hard rocky surfaces. This feeding mode is consistent with its habitat association with rocky stream substrates in clear, well-lit water.

No specific diet studies have been published for this species. In the aquarium, algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional supplementation with protein-rich foods such as small frozen invertebrates represent a reasonable feeding regime consistent with what is known for the broader genus.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Hemiancistrus fuliginosus in the published literature or in aquarium records available at the time of writing. The broader loricariid pattern involves males defending territories around suitable spawning sites — crevices in rock, under flat stones, or in tight cave-like spaces — and actively courting females by patrolling and displaying. Given the species' rocky stream habitat, natural spawning sites are likely rock crevices or areas beneath cobbles in the streambed.

Breeding

No confirmed breeding reports for Hemiancistrus fuliginosus in captivity have been published. Cave-spawning with paternal egg guarding is the norm across Hypostominae, and by analogy with related genera the species would be expected to deposit adhesive eggs in a sheltered cavity, with the male remaining in attendance to fan and guard the clutch until hatching and fry dispersal. The subtropical origin suggests that cooler conditioning temperatures in winter may play a role in triggering reproductive behaviour, but this remains speculative in the absence of documented spawning records.

In the aquarium

Hemiancistrus fuliginosus is a rarely encountered species in the hobby, with no dedicated L-number and limited trade presence. Its subtropical origin is a meaningful husbandry consideration: unlike most loricariids sourced from the Amazon basin, this species comes from a region with genuine seasonal cooling, and it likely tolerates — and may benefit from — temperatures in the 64–75 °F range, with warmer summer conditions up to around 79 °F acceptable.

A tank with a rocky hardscape, strong filtration providing good water movement, and clean, well-oxygenated water would best replicate its upland stream conditions. Flat rocks, slate ledges, and caves formed from stone provide both cover and natural substrate for grazing. Soft substrate areas are unnecessary; a gravel or smooth rock bottom suits the species well.

The dark, unpatterned colouration means this fish is best appreciated in a tank with lighting that emphasises the texture of its scutes rather than bright, high-contrast décor. It is unlikely to be aggressive toward dissimilar tankmates, though territorial interactions with conspecifics or similarly shaped benthic species are possible if territories overlap. No specific data on community compatibility is available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiancistrus fuliginosus as Least Concern in October 2020, noting its occurrence across the upper Uruguay River basin without evidence of significant population decline. The species is restricted to southern Brazil (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states), where it inhabits upland stream systems.

The upper Uruguay basin faces ongoing anthropogenic pressure from agricultural intensification, riparian vegetation removal, hydroelectric development, and sedimentation — threats common to southern Brazilian river systems. While the current LC status reflects no acute conservation concern, the relatively restricted range and low profile in the aquarium trade means population monitoring data for this species are limited. Captive breeding has not been established in the hobby, so any significant collection for the ornamental trade would draw on wild populations.
