Taxonomy & naming
Hemiancistrus landoni was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1916 in the Annals of the Carnegie Museum (volume 10, pages 77–86), from the type locality of Naranjito, Ecuador — a locality in the Guayas drainage on Ecuador's Pacific slope. A complementary description of the holotype appeared in Eigenmann (1922, page 72, plate 9 figure 3, plate 10 figure 2). The species remained understudied for most of the twentieth century; the key modern revision of Ecuadorian Hemiancistrus is that of Provenzano and Barriga (2017) in Zootaxa (volume 4272, pages 221–235), which confirmed H. landoni's status and distinguished it from a close congener in the Esmeraldas River drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Hemiancistrus landoni Eigenmann, 1916. The synonym Hemiancistrus hammarlundi Rendahl, 1937 is now subsumed.
Hemiancistrus is placed in subfamily Hypostominae. The genus is characterised by a combination of features including the absence of evertible interopercular odontodes, a body heavily armoured in bony scutes, and a broadly herbivorous feeding mode focused on periphyton grazing. The genus has undergone substantial taxonomic revision in recent decades as molecular and morphological work continues to clarify boundaries within the diverse Hypostominae.
No L-numbers have been assigned to H. landoni; it has not entered the ornamental trade to any documented degree.
Morphology
Hemiancistrus landoni reaches a maximum of approximately 10 in TL (FishBase reference 36713) or 10 in SL (Jiménez-Prado et al. 2015, cited in the IUCN assessment). This places it firmly in the larger-bodied half of the Hemiancistrus size spectrum — substantial enough to be a meaningful food fish at local subsistence scale.
The body follows the standard hypostomine armoured plan: overlapping bony scutes dorsally and laterally, a ventrally flattened underside with reduced armour, and a subterminal suckermouth with multicusped teeth adapted for rasping periphyton from hard substrates. The species adheres to rocks using its modified mouth — a behaviour noted in the IUCN assessment in the context of feeding on periphyton over rocky, gravel, and sandy bottoms.
Detailed meristic and colour descriptions are available in the original Eigenmann (1916) account and in the Provenzano and Barriga (2017) revision, which provides characters separating H. landoni from its closest Ecuadorian congener in the Esmeraldas drainage. No L-number morphotype descriptions exist for this species.
Habitat
The species occurs in permanent rivers and streams on the Pacific slope of Ecuador — specifically the Guayas, Arenillas, Puyango, and Zaracay rivers, and possibly the northern reaches of the Santiago-Cayapas drainage (Barriga 2012). Provincial records span Manabí, Los Ríos, Guayas, and El Oro. The IUCN assessment gives an extent of occurrence of 19,532–32,131 mi², confirming a moderate-sized range concentrated in the coastal lowland and foothill drainages of southwestern Ecuador.
Reports from northwestern Peru require confirmation and are not formally accepted as part of the current range. A close congener is recorded in the Esmeraldas River drainage to the north, and the Provenzano and Barriga (2017) revision clarifies the species boundary between the two.
The Pacific-slope rivers of Ecuador are swift-flowing systems draining the western Andes. They are typically warm, moderately to well-oxygenated, and support rocky substrate habitats from foothill gorges down through the coastal plains. Suitable habitat is described as permanent rivers with rocky, gravel, and sandy bottoms where the fish adheres to hard surfaces to feed. Temperature range recorded on FishBase is 75–82 °F.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment describes H. landoni as a periphyton grazer that adheres to rocks to feed — consistent with the multitoothed suckermouth morphology typical of hypostomines occupying rocky-substrate rivers. Periphyton (the biofilm of algae, bacteria, diatoms, and fine organic matter coating submerged surfaces) is the primary food source inferred from morphology and habitat; no dietary analysis for this species was found in available literature.
In aquaria, fish of this feeding guild are typically maintained on a varied diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and sinking catfish pellets. Their relatively large size means that feeding requirements are proportionally greater than for smaller plecos, and tank bioload should be planned accordingly.
Mating
No published accounts of courtship behaviour exist for H. landoni. The species is not kept in the aquarium trade, and no wild behavioural observations have been reported in available sources. Based on the broadly conserved loricariid reproductive pattern in which males defend a sheltered spawning site, attract females, and guard the resultant clutch, cave or crevice spawning with paternal care is inferred as the most probable reproductive mode. Rocky-substrate rivers of the type H. landoni inhabits typically offer abundant natural crevices and shelter between boulders.
Breeding
No breeding accounts for H. landoni in captivity or detailed accounts of wild reproduction have been published. The species has not been documented in the ornamental trade under any L-number or common name beyond its local Spanish names. Reproductive information cannot be reported without fabrication; inference from family biology suggests cave spawning with paternal brood guarding, but no specific data on clutch size, incubation period, or fry behaviour are available.
In the aquarium
Hemiancistrus landoni is not a trade species and is not available through the ornamental fish industry. Its relatively large adult size (to 10 in TL) and its restricted Pacific-slope distribution in Ecuador mean that it is unlikely to enter mainstream hobbyist circulation. No established aquarium husbandry protocols exist for this species.
For context: were a specimen to be maintained, the ecological requirements of the Guayas basin environment would point toward warm (75–82 °F), well-oxygenated water with a rocky substrate and moderate current, pH in the range of the coastal-Andean drainages, and a diet of periphyton-substitute foods (algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables). The species' size would require a large, well-filtered aquarium. Local subsistence fisheries indicate that it is valued as food, not primarily as an aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiancistrus landoni as Least Concern in an assessment dated 28 September 2020 (published 2021; assessor: T.J. Lyons, ABQ BioPark / New Mexico BioPark Society; reviewers: P. Arguello, R. Barriga, and D. Escobar-Camacho). The assessment cites population trend as unknown and notes an extent of occurrence of 19,532–32,131 mi².
The species occurs in at least one protected area within its range. Threats identified in the assessment include agricultural transformation, dam construction, artisanal mining, urbanisation, and pollution throughout the Guayas River basin — the same threats that affect most aquatic species in Ecuador's Pacific-slope lowlands. The Guayas basin in particular has experienced significant watershed modification from banana and shrimp aquaculture, sugar cane agriculture, and urban expansion around Guayaquil. The species is taken in subsistence fisheries but is not recorded in commercial catch data.
No species-specific management plan exists. The Least Concern listing reflects current population viability, but the population trend is unknown and continued agricultural and infrastructural pressure on Pacific-slope rivers in Ecuador and Peru warrants monitoring.
