Taxonomy & naming
Hypancistrus parkateje was described by Araújo, Ferreira, Monteiro, and Wosiacki in 2024 in the Journal of Fish Biology (volume 106, number 2, pages 592–601; DOI: 10.1111/jfb.15971). The species name honours the Parkatêjê, a traditional Indigenous community whose territory encompasses the middle Tocantins watershed near the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Hypancistrus parkateje with the authority as above; no synonyms are known.
No L-number or LDA number has been assigned. The species was collected near São João do Araguaia, municipality of Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Pará State, Brazil, representing the Lower Amazon / Middle Tocantins ecoregion.
Hypancistrus belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae. The genus was erected to accommodate a group of small, lightly toothed, carnivory-biased plecos and has expanded substantially through the past two decades of both formal description and L-number trade activity. Phylogenetically, Hypancistrus sits within Ancistrini alongside Baryancistrus, Peckoltia, and related genera (Armbruster, 2004).
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL) per the type series (FishBase reference 133033; PlanetCatfish: 3 in SL). The body is covered in loricariid scute armour and is relatively flattened in cross-section, adapted to pressing against rock faces in current.
Diagnostic characters described in the original paper include: hypertrophied odontodes on the cheeks extending beyond the cleithrum; a conspicuously elevated supraoccipital crest; a tan background coloration overlaid with three oblique dark bars on the anterior body and horizontal vermicular bars between the pectoral girdle and the dorsal-fin base; and a distinctive E-shaped dark mark on the snout. The adipose appendix is diminished, and the maxillary barbels are short, not reaching the edges of the lower lip.
Dentition is notably sparse for a loricariid: dentary 5–8 teeth, premaxilla 10–14 teeth — consistent with the genus-wide trend toward reduced tooth counts relative to algae-scraping taxa. Dorsal-fin formula: 2 spines, 7 soft rays; anal fin: 1 spine, 4 soft rays.
Sexual dimorphism follows the Hypancistrus pattern. Males possess a thicker first pectoral-fin ray, more prominent odontodes on the pectoral ray and on the cheeks and posterior body, and a wider head. Females are broader around the mid-body and have less conspicuous odontodes.
Habitat
The type locality is the Região do Caju Amigo, near São João do Araguaia on the Río Tocantins, municipality of Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Pará State, Brazil (5°20'27"S, 48°47'18.3"W). The middle Tocantins at this point flows over a rocky riverbed with moderate to fast current, the kind of habitat that characterises many Hypancistrus localities across the Xingu, Tapajós, and related Amazon tributaries.
The species is classified as freshwater, demersal, and tropical. Distribution records place it in the Lower Amazon / Middle Tocantins sub-drainage. No water chemistry data (temperature, pH) specific to the type locality are available from the published record. Resilience per FishBase is estimated as high, with a population doubling time of less than 15 months.
FishBase lists commercial fisheries and commercial aquarium trade as human uses, consistent with collection of this and related species for the ornamental market even before formal description. Rocky rapids with interstices between boulders — favoured refuges for Hypancistrus generally — are the inferred microhabitat.
Feeding
Hypancistrus parkateje is a carnivorous species, consistent with genus-level biology. Hypancistrus are poorly adapted for algae scraping relative to taxa such as Ancistrus or Pterygoplichthys: their mouths are comparatively small and their tooth counts low, equipping them instead for picking invertebrates and small food items from rock crevices and current-swept substrate.
In the aquarium, suitable foods include frozen or live bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp (Artemia), and similar protein-rich invertebrate items. High-quality sinking carnivore pellets or discus granules are generally accepted. Algae wafers can be offered but should not form the dietary foundation. Occasional vegetable matter (blanched courgette, cucumber) rounds out the diet and may support digestive health. Heavy reliance on plant-based foods is inappropriate and can cause poor condition over time in this genus.
Mating
No breeding observations for Hypancistrus parkateje have been published or reported in hobbyist records as of the time of description. The species was registered by only two hobbyists on PlanetCatfish following its 2024 publication, and no spawning accounts are yet available.
Courtship in Hypancistrus generally follows the pattern seen across cave-spawning loricariids: males establish and defend a cavity site, develop more prominent odontodes during reproductive condition, and court females by displaying from or near the cave entrance. The dimorphism described above — particularly male head width and pectoral-fin odontodes — serves as a conditioning and readiness indicator for aquarists attempting to sex and condition pairs.
Breeding
Hypancistrus parkateje is inferred to be a cave spawner based on the reproductive biology of congeneric species such as Hypancistrus zebra and H. inspector, both of which are well-documented cave spawners with paternal egg-guarding. In these species the male selects a tight cave, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the interior cave walls, and the male fans and guards the clutch through incubation and into early fry development.
No confirmed breeding data specific to H. parkateje are available. Aquarists attempting to breed the species should provide multiple cave options (ceramic tubes, sections of slate, appropriately sized PVC), maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with good flow, and condition prospective pairs on a protein-rich diet. The species' origin in rocky Tocantins rapids suggests that elevated water flow and high oxygen are likely prerequisites for breeding readiness.
In the aquarium
At approximately 3 in SL, Hypancistrus parkateje is a small pleco well-suited to medium aquaria. A tank of 15–20 US gal accommodates a single specimen comfortably; a group or a pair with the intent to breed warrants 25 US gal or more, with multiple cave structures spread across the tank to distribute territorial claims.
Water quality and oxygenation should be high, reflecting the species' origin in clear, fast-moving Tocantins rapids. Efficient filtration, a power-head or wavemaker to increase surface agitation, and regular water changes are all beneficial. The species is not yet documented to tolerate soft, acidic water as well as some lower-Xingu Hypancistrus, but Tocantins water chemistry tends toward neutral pH and moderate softness, suggesting similar parameters as a starting point.
Furnishing with flat rocks, slate caves, and fine sand substrate serves the species well. Driftwood can be added for aesthetics and secondary biofilm; it is not a dietary requirement. Plants compatible with moderate to good current (Anubias on rock, Microsorum) are suitable.
Compatible tankmates include small, peaceful mid-water fish such as small tetras and Corydoras. Large or territorial bottom-dwellers should be avoided. The carnivorous diet should be borne in mind when keeping with very small shrimp or fry.
Owing to the recency of the formal description (2024), husbandry information is limited. Observations from closely related Hypancistrus species provide the best practical guidance in the interim.
Conservation
Hypancistrus parkateje was described in 2024 and has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It is currently listed as Not Evaluated.
The Tocantins River and its tributaries have experienced significant hydrological alteration from dam construction — the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Dam downstream and the Serra da Mesa, Cana Brava, and São Salvador projects upstream have reshaped flow regimes, temperature profiles, and sediment dynamics across large portions of the watershed. Rocky rapids habitat, the specialised environment of this species, is particularly vulnerable to inundation behind dams and to altered seasonal flood pulses that affect invertebrate communities.
The Parkatêjê people, for whom the species is named, have maintained connection to the riverside territories of the middle Tocantins for generations; the species' formal recognition as part of that landscape may contribute to its cultural visibility and the case for habitat protection. Formal IUCN assessment would benefit from additional distributional surveys to establish the breadth and continuity of the population.
