The yellowhead zebra pleco is a compact, carnivore-biased loricariid from the upper Orinoco — distinctive enough to identify at a glance, rare enough in the trade to command a premium, and just challenging enough to breed that each successful clutch feels earned. Mature males develop a warm golden flush across the snout and head that gives the fish its hobby name, a colour shift absent in females and in juveniles whose bold black-and-tan banding is the sharpest of any life stage.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypancistrus furunculus was formally described by Armbruster, Lujan and Taphorn in 2007 in Copeia (volume 2007, number 1, pages 62–79), from material collected at the Cucue Amerindian village on the Río Orinoco, approximately 37 mi east of San Juan de Atabapo, Amazonas State, Venezuela (type locality coordinates 3°58'26''N, 67°09'30''W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination Hypancistrus furunculus with no currently accepted synonyms.

The species had been known to the hobby long before its formal description: it entered the German aquarium trade around 1995 and was assigned the code L199 in the September 1995 issue of DATZ magazine. This pre-description status as an L-number fish is typical for the genus — many Hypancistrus circulated in the hobby for years before ichthyologists could formally characterise them.

The 2007 paper by Armbruster and colleagues described H. furunculus alongside three closely related species from Venezuelan Amazonia: H. contradens, H. lunaorum (L339), and H. debilittera (L129). The four species share the Orinoco watershed but differ in patterning details, tooth counts, and meristic characters. Armbruster (2004) placed Hypancistrus within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, a placement consistent with its reduced tooth count and carnivorous diet relative to the heavily toothed, herbivorous loricariid lineages.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL), giving H. furunculus a moderate build compared to many Hypancistrus. The body is depressed and covered in the typical loricariid bony scute armour. Ground colour is tan to pale brown, overlaid with bold dark brown to near-black oblique bars on the anterior part of the body and dark dorsal saddles posteriorly. A conspicuous dark E-shaped marking appears on the dorsal surface of the snout between and behind the eyes — this feature distinguishes it from close relatives. The dorsal fin carries complete, uninterrupted horizontal dark bands, and the light bands of the caudal fin are approximately equal in width to the dark bands, another diagnostic character.

Compared to the famous H. zebra (L046), the background colour is tan rather than near-white, and the body carries only a single oblique lateral stripe plus posterior dorsal saddles rather than complete oblique banding from head to tail. Mature males develop substantial odontodes on the posterior body, behind the gill covers, and especially along the first pectoral-fin spine; the head is wider and longer than in females. A notable secondary characteristic in breeding condition males is a yellow or golden flush across the snout and upper head — the feature responsible for the 'yellowhead' common name. Females are generally shorter-bodied, narrower-headed, and carry much reduced odontodes.

Habitat

Hypancistrus furunculus is endemic to Venezuela, known from the upper Orinoco mainstem and the lower Ventuari River — a blackwater tributary of the upper Orinoco. The type locality lies in Amazonas State near San Juan de Atabapo, at the confluence of blackwater and clearwater drainages in one of the most river-complex regions on Earth. ScotCat (Armbruster 2023 IUCN notes) records the species throughout the upper mainstem Orinoco and Ventuari.

Field data and hobbyist import records indicate the species prefers warm, well-oxygenated water with strong current, typically associated with rocky substrates and crevice-rich environments in medium-to-large river channels. Temperature range in the wild likely spans approximately 75–84 °F, with soft, slightly acidic water consistent with the mixed blackwater/clearwater origin. PlanetCatfish records a temperature preference of 76–83 °F. The fish are strongly associated with sheltered rock crevices and interstitial spaces rather than open-bottom habitats; in captivity they favour caves and tight passages between rocks over open sand or wood.

Feeding

Unlike the majority of popular loricariids — which lean algae-scraping or are fully omnivorous — Hypancistrus furunculus is essentially carnivorous. The genus is characterised by a small, lightly toothed mouth with reduced tooth counts relative to the herbi-algal loricariids, reflecting adaptation away from rasping hard surfaces and toward ingesting small invertebrates. PlanetCatfish notes that Hypancistrus should receive primarily meaty foods: frozen bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp (Artemia), mosquito larvae, and similar invertebrate-based foods form the dietary core.

In practice, juveniles often show more interest in vegetable-based foods such as spirulina wafers and blanched courgette, and this can mislead keepers into running a predominantly plant-based diet that leaves adults undernourished. Meaty offerings should dominate from sub-adult size onward. Small dried pellet foods formulated for carnivorous catfishes or discus foods are also accepted. Overfeeding is a genuine risk in sedentary, slow-moving individuals; offering small, frequent feeds is preferable to large, infrequent ones. Algae wafers can be offered as a supplement but should not be the primary food source.

Mating

Like other Hypancistrus, H. furunculus is a cave-spawning species with strong male site fidelity. Males stake out and defend narrow rock crevices or cave entrances well before spawning occurs, and will repel competing males energetically. Territorial encounters between males can involve chasing, mouth-locking, and display of the enlarged pectoral odontodes. In aquaria with limited cave resources, persistent aggression can injure smaller or subordinate males.

Conditioning involves raising water temperature slightly toward the upper end of the range (81–86 °F), offering a more varied and protein-rich diet, and performing frequent partial water changes that simulate the seasonal water-level and chemistry fluctuations of the Orinoco. Gravid females are visibly broader-bodied when viewed from above; their papilla is swollen and rounded compared to the male's smaller, pointed genital papilla. A receptive female will enter the male's chosen cavity, where spawning takes place. To avoid inter-specific hybridisation — documented in captive Hypancistrus under crowded conditions — only one Hypancistrus species should be housed per tank.

Breeding

Hypancistrus furunculus is a cave-spawner with exclusive paternal brood care — once a female spawns, she takes no further part in egg or larval tending. The male remains in or near the cave entrance throughout incubation, fanning and periodically repositioning the adhesive egg mass, which consists of 20–30 relatively large yolk-rich eggs. Hobbyist breeding accounts (ScotCat, PlanetCatfish breeding reports) are consistent on clutch size and the dominant role of the male.

Incubation lasts approximately 5–7 days at 81–84 °F. The large yolk sac sustains newly hatched fry for several days before they become free-swimming and begin searching for food. At this stage they are already approximately 0.5 in in length — large enough to accept fine live foods (Artemia nauplii, microworms) and finely powdered carnivore preparations. The male typically guards the brood until fry disperse. Four breeding reports appear on PlanetCatfish as of 2025. To maximise success, a dedicated breeding tank or a tank with adequate rock caves to allow the male undisturbed guarding is strongly recommended.

In the aquarium

At 4.5 in SL, H. furunculus is a manageable-sized pleco suitable for moderately sized aquaria. A minimum of 20 US gal for a single fish is reasonable; a group or a breeding pair benefits from at least 30 US gal, with multiple hiding spots so subdominant individuals can avoid the dominant male. Substrate should be sand or fine gravel, with a significant proportion of the floor area occupied by rocks, cave structures (slate plates, clay tubes, PVC pipe), and optional driftwood for cover and territory partitioning.

Water quality demands are typical for the upper Orinoco: temperature 77–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately soft water (hardness under 12 °dH). This species is intolerant of elevated nitrate; weekly 25–30% water changes are advisable. The recommended warmer-end temperature (81–84 °F) exceeds the comfort range of many cold-tolerant community fish, so tankmate selection requires attention. Compatible companions include other upper-Orinoco species that share the warm, soft-water preference: small to medium tetras, pencilfish, apistogramma cichlids, and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers. Only one Hypancistrus species should occupy the tank to prevent hybridisation.

H. furunculus is less commonly available than H. zebra or H. inspector, and specimens offered for sale are predominantly wild-caught or first-generation captive-bred, making the price relatively high. Tank-raised stock should be sought where possible.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypancistrus furunculus as Least Concern in 2020 (last assessed 17 August 2020, assessor J.W. Armbruster). The assessment notes that the species occupies a fairly large range within the upper Orinoco mainstem and Ventuari River — a habitat of exceptional complexity that likely buffers local subpopulations from overexploitation. The assessment also acknowledges that H. furunculus and H. debilittera may prove synonymous following further study, which would effectively extend the range further.

The upper Orinoco faces lower deforestation pressure than some other South American river basins, but proposed hydroelectric projects on Venezuelan Amazonian rivers represent a genuine long-term threat to all rock-crevice-dependent loricariids. Collection for the ornamental trade is ongoing, though at levels presently judged compatible with wild population stability. Hobbyist captive breeding reduces — but does not eliminate — demand for wild-collected specimens, and successful propagation is documented though not widespread.
