Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides urophthalmus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1866, on the basis of specimens collected near Belém (then Pará), at the mouth of the Amazon in northern Brazil. Günther placed the species in the genus Rivulus, and it remained there under the combination Rivulus urophthalmus for most of its subsequent history. The current valid name, Anablepsoides urophthalmus (Günther, 1866), reflects the generic revision by Wilson J. E. Costa (2006), who restructured the former Rivulus sensu lato into a series of genera on molecular and morphological grounds; the authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally described under a different genus.
Within the genus, the species gives its name to the urophthalmus species-group, sometimes referred to as the Anablepsoides micropus group in later literature following Costa's 2006 treatment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid combination as Anablepsoides urophthalmus (Günther, 1866), placed in the family Rivulidae. Populations from Guyana and French Guiana have been documented in the killifish literature and show geographic variation in colour pattern and meristics, though no subspecific taxa have been formally named.
Morphology
Anablepsoides urophthalmus is a moderately built, laterally compressed rivuline reaching a maximum of 3 in standard length (FishBase). The body plan is typical of the non-annual South American rivulines: an elongate profile with the dorsal fin set well back, aligned roughly over the anal fin, a rounded caudal fin, and an upturned mouth suited to taking prey at or near the water surface. The lateral line, as in other rivulids, is incomplete.
Meristics recorded in the killifish literature include 7 dorsal-fin rays, 12 anal-fin rays, and approximately 39 lateral scales (D7, A12, LL39). Eggs reported from breeding accounts are amber in colour and around 0.5 in in diameter — large relative to the adult's body, consistent with the direct-development strategy of non-annual killifish. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in the typical rivuline fashion: males carry the vivid iridescent colouration of the group — blue-green flanks with red or orange spotting — while females are drabber, brownish, and may retain the caudal-base ocellus ('rivuline spot') common among female Anablepsoides.
Habitat
The type locality is the lowland forest zone near Belém, Pará, at the mouth of the Amazon delta, where permanent freshwater streams, forest pools, and seasonally flooded forest margins form the characteristic aquatic mosaic of the eastern Amazon. It Rains Fishes' breeding accounts describe material bred from Pará state near Belém, consistent with Günther's original type locality. Additional populations have been documented from Guyana and French Guiana, extending the known range across the Guiana Shield lowlands.
FishBase records the species as a permanent freshwater inhabitant — it is not a seasonal or annual killifish and does not depend on temporary pools. The recorded pH is around 7 and temperature approximately 72 °F, indicating a preference for cool to moderate tropical lowland conditions rather than the warm, stagnant, strongly acid blackwater typical of some Amazonian killifish. The habitat at and near the type locality consists of permanently flowing or standing clear-water streams and pools in lowland forest, likely with surface vegetation, leaf litter, and riparian overhanging plants that provide the attachment surfaces and refuge structure that non-annual rivulines favour.
Feeding
Anablepsoides urophthalmus is a generalised small carnivore, as expected of a non-annual rivuline of its size. In the wild the diet is presumed to consist primarily of small invertebrates taken at or near the water surface — aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and other zooplankton-sized prey appropriate to the upturned mouth morphology.
In captivity the species is reported to be undemanding: It Rains Fishes notes that live foods form the core of the recommended diet, and the species accepts the range of small invertebrate foods typical of killifish culture — Drosophila, small waxworms, Daphnia, cyclops, and frozen bloodworm. As with other Anablepsoides, overfeeding with rich live foods risks obesity; a varied diet offered in moderate quantities keeps breeding condition without metabolic stress.
Mating
Anablepsoides urophthalmus is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent water and does not produce diapausing eggs capable of surviving substrate desiccation. Its reproductive mode is that of a plant or mop spawner — pairs deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or the fibres of floating spawning mops over an extended period, with no mass spawning event and no buried peat substrate involved. This mode is fundamentally different from the peat-spawning annuals of genus Austrolebias or Nothobranchius with which killifish are sometimes stereotyped.
According to It Rains Fishes, a pair in breeding condition spawns daily, depositing roughly 5–15 eggs at each session on mop fibres or fine plants. Males court with lateral flank displays, extending and spreading the dorsal and caudal fins to present their full colouration. The pair align side by side and the eggs are released individually, adhering firmly to the substrate. Spawning continues throughout adult life; the species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish, with a lifespan of up to three years recorded from captive specimens.
Breeding
Eggs of Anablepsoides urophthalmus are amber-coloured, approximately 0.5 in in diameter, and firm-shelled. They incubate in water — there is no diapause, no desiccation phase, and no peat storage — with hatching occurring at around 14 days at typical tank temperatures near 72 °F. Fry are comparatively well-developed at hatching, a feature of the large-egg, direct-development strategy, and are capable of taking appropriately sized live foods from very early on.
The standard killifish mop-and-pick method is well suited to this species: spawning mops are placed in the breeding tank, checked every few days, and individual eggs are removed to small incubation containers of aged or conditioned water. Fungused eggs should be removed promptly. Newly hatched fry accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii, microworms, and finely sieved Daphnia as first foods. Growth is steady at the recommended temperature range and the fish can be sexed by colouration within the first few months. Multiple spawning pairs can be cycled through a single set of equipment, since the low-but-steady egg output means fish can be separated and rotated between a species tank and a spawning vessel without disruption.
In the aquarium
Anablepsoides urophthalmus is well-suited to specialist killifish culture and can also be kept by the general aquarist with a little care. FishBase notes it is easy to maintain and non-annual, making it more forgiving than the annual peat-spawners. A small, covered aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or a small group; surface plants or floating mops provide both spawning sites and cover. The tight-fitting lid common to all killifish set-ups is important — rivulines are active and can jump through small gaps.
Water conditions should reflect the type locality: temperature around 72 °F, pH near neutral (7.0), and moderate hardness. The species is not a blackwater specialist and does not require the extreme acidity appropriate for some other rivulines. Partial water changes of 20–30 % per week maintain water quality and stimulate spawning activity. The fish is peaceful with similarly sized tankmates but is best kept in a species or near-species arrangement to make egg collection practical and to reduce competition from faster-feeding fish. Lifespan of up to three years allows hobbyists to maintain established pairs and colony lines over a meaningful period.
Conservation
Anablepsoides urophthalmus has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment and its conservation status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE). Its broad range across the lower Amazon basin and the Guiana Shield lowlands — encompassing Pará (Brazil), Guyana, and French Guiana — suggests it is not an immediately threatened single-locality endemic in the manner of many smaller, range-restricted rivulines. Permanent lowland forest streams and pools across this region form a vast, if increasingly pressured, network of potential habitat.
Nonetheless, the broader context for Amazonian and Guianan freshwater fish is one of significant ongoing pressure: forest clearance for agriculture and cattle, river modification, and the spread of invasive species all affect lowland stream communities across the eastern Amazon and Guiana Shield. The species' apparent tolerance of near-neutral water suggests it may be less restricted to intact blackwater forest than some of its relatives, but direct survey and population data are lacking. A formal assessment by the IUCN's freshwater fish specialist group would clarify the picture; in the meantime, the maintenance of captive breeding lines in the killifish hobby serves as a modest insurance measure for populations that have been well-documented in culture since at least the period of It Rains Fishes' breeding accounts.
