Taxonomy & naming
Loricaria pumila was described by Matthew R. Thomas and Lucia Helena Rapp Py-Daniel in 2008 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 6, number 3, pages 379–394), in a paper introducing three new Loricaria species from river channels of the Amazon basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 70586) recognises it as a valid species within Loricaria Linnaeus, 1758 — the type genus of subfamily Loricariinae.
The species belongs to a subset of Loricaria that shares small adult size; within the genus it is most similar to L. nickeriensis in this respect, but is distinguished from that species and from all other Amazonian Loricaria by the degree of head-crest development, plate arrangement, and lateral plate counts (31–32 total plates in the lateral series, modal 31; 18–19 post-anal plates, modal 18). The name was assigned the Catalog of Fishes species ID 70586 and has no synonyms. It has no established common name in either the trade or popular literature, and PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers.
Morphology
Loricaria pumila is the smallest adult Loricaria known to science, reaching approximately 3 in standard length (SL) — a size at which it already attains sexual maturity. This is not a growth artefact or juvenile measurement: the type series comprises sexually mature individuals, and the description notes that the species reaches maturity below 3 in SL. The epithet pumila (dwarf) reflects this directly.
The body follows the loricariine plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, elongate, armoured in overlapping bony scutes. A distinctive feature is the prominent crests on the surfaces of the head, and predorsal plates bearing numerous well-developed odontodes arranged in conspicuous linear rows — more elaborate than in most of its congeners. The anterior abdominal area covering the pectoral girdle is naked (unplated), with only occasional small isolated plates at the bases of the pectoral fins. The pre-anal shield and the space between the lateral abdominal plates are occupied by large polygonal plates.
Lateral plate count (31–32, modal 31) and post-anal plate count (18–19, modal 18) are within the range of the genus but useful in combination with size and head morphology for identification. Breeding males, as in all Loricariinae, develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head and pectoral spines. Females are broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Loricaria pumila is known from the lower Amazon basin of Pará State, Brazil — specifically the area near the mouth of the rio Tapajós and the rio Pará adjacent to and including the lower rio Tocantins. The type locality is Rio Pará, 10 mi downstream of Curralinho, 6 mi upstream from Paquetá (approximately 1°48'03"S, 49°39'53"W), Pará State, Brazil.
Specimens were collected by bottom trawl at depths of 3 to 29 metres, ranging from 15 to 1,500 metres offshore from the riverbank, over substrates of silt and organic detritus. This is a notably deep-water habitat for a loricariid — most whiptails are associated with shallow riffles, sandy margins, or leaf litter. The silty, detritus-rich channel bottom of the lower Amazon is a distinctive microhabitat, and Loricaria pumila appears specialised for it rather than for the fast-water rocky environments favoured by many related species.
Feeding
A specimen at 3 in SL yielded stomach contents including aquatic insect larvae, sclerotised insect body parts, organic detritus, and sand grains — the only direct dietary data available for the species. This profile is consistent with a benthos-foraging strategy on silty, organic-rich substrates: the fish appears to ingest fine detritus and associated invertebrates from channel-bottom sediment, likely using the ventrally placed mouth to hoover material from the silt surface.
The presence of sand in the stomach is common in loricariids from soft-substrate habitats and probably reflects incidental ingestion during feeding rather than geophagy. In an aquarium context, congeners on similar diets accept fine sinking foods, algae wafers, blanched leafy vegetables, and live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia and bloodworm.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship in L. pumila exist. Given its deep-water, silt-bottom habitat, reproductive behaviour likely differs in detail from the stream-dwelling Rineloricaria species more familiar to hobbyists, though the underlying Loricariinae reproductive pattern — territorial males, paternal brood care, cavity or substrate spawning — is presumed to be conserved.
Males in breeding condition develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head and pectoral spines, as in other loricarines. The head-crest development that is a notable feature of this species' description may be at least partially sexual in function, though this has not been formally tested.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding records exist for L. pumila — it is essentially absent from captivity. The reproductive biology is inferred from the family and subfamily. Loricariinae are generally substrate-spawning species with paternal egg-guarding: the male defends a clutch deposited on a sheltered surface (cavity wall, undersurface of rock or wood, or substrate depression), fans the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins, and removes dead eggs until hatching.
The deep-water, silty-substrate ecology of this species makes the specific details of its nest-site selection uncertain. Clutch size, incubation duration, and fry development are all undocumented. The small adult size means clutches would be expected to be correspondingly smaller than those of large-bodied whiptails.
In the aquarium
Loricaria pumila is not in the aquarium trade and has no hobbyist care history on record. Its deep-water, turbid Amazon channel habitat makes it an unlikely candidate for casual collection alongside the shallower-water loricariids that enter the trade. PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers and notes it is rarely if ever traded.
From a purely biological standpoint, its small adult size (3 in SL) would make it one of the most compact Loricaria suitable for aquarium life — a notable contrast to the 8–14 in adult sizes typical of larger genus members. The soft-substrate, detritus-rich diet and apparent tolerance for lower oxygen levels in deep channel habitats might make it less demanding of fast current than many loricariines, but these are inferences from habitat data rather than established care experience.
Any keeper who encountered this species would do well to replicate the silt-and-detritus substrate with fine sand or silt, provide low to moderate current, and offer a mixed diet of fine detritus-based sinking foods, frozen invertebrates, and blanched vegetables.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria pumila as Least Concern in November 2018. The species is recorded from the lower Amazon channel and adjacent large rivers — a vast and relatively intact system at present — and there is no evidence of significant decline.
The lower Amazon and rio Pará corridor near the mouth of the Tocantins faces development pressure from the Tucuruí hydroelectric complex upstream, which has profoundly altered sediment dynamics and seasonal flood pulses in the lower Tocantins. Long-term changes in silt deposition in the species' known range are plausible consequences, though whether these constitute a meaningful threat to a species apparently adapted to silty channel bottoms is unknown. Commercial fisheries in the lower Amazon operate at large scale but do not target small loricariids. The species is not currently considered at risk.
