Megalancistrus barrae was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1910 as Ancistrus barrae, published in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Klasse (volume 47, number 8, pp. 58), from specimens collected near the town of Barra on the Rio São Francisco in Brazil. The species was transferred to the genus Megalancistrus by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1989, and that combination — Megalancistrus barrae (Steindachner, 1910) — is the name recognised as valid by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
Megalancistrus is a small, monotypic-or-near-monotypic genus within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae. The genus name derives from the Greek megas/megalos (great, large) and agkistron (hook), essentially meaning 'big Ancistrus' — an apt description of a genus that physically dwarfs the armoured catfishes to which Steindachner first assigned it. Among hobbyists the species carries no formal L-number; it circulates under descriptive common names only, including 'Black Spiny Pleco', 'Azzura Pleco', and 'Giant Ancistrus', the last of these echoing the original placement.
No other species in Megalancistrus are currently recognised, making M. barrae the sole representative of an otherwise isolated loricariid lineage within the São Francisco drainage.
Morphology
Adults reach 16.5 in standard length (SL), with a maximum recorded weight of approximately 2.2 kg, placing Megalancistrus barrae among the largest loricariids described. The body carries the full complement of loricariid armour: overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal series along the flanks, a flattened ventral surface, and a sucking disc formed from the highly modified mouth and surrounding tissue.
The genus is characterised above all by its evertible interopercular odontodes — elongated, recurved spines that can be spread laterally from the cheek region when the fish is threatened or displaying. These structures are considerably more developed than in most Hypostomus relatives, giving the fish an imposing bristled profile at close quarters. PlanetCatfish notes that M. barrae is 'differentiated from other large loricariids by the presence of evertible interopercular odontodes,' a trait shared with the genus Ancistrus but expressed here at a far larger body scale.
Ground coloration is dark — brownish to near-black — consistent with a cryptic, rock-associated lifestyle in the turbid lower São Francisco. Juveniles may show paler mottling that fades with age. The caudal fin is moderately forked, the dorsal fin tall when erect, and the pectoral spines stout and ossified.
Habitat
Megalancistrus barrae is endemic to the São Francisco River basin, Brazil — one of the great endorheic river systems of eastern South America, draining a vast semi-arid interior before reaching the Atlantic coast in Alagoas and Sergipe states. The type locality is the Rio São Francisco near the town of Barra, in Bahia state, within the middle São Francisco valley.
Within this drainage the species occupies benthic, demersal habitats — rocky substrate and boulder fields in the main channel and larger tributaries are the presumed microhabitat, consistent with the preferences of other large, spiny Hypostominae. The São Francisco is a tropical river with a pronounced wet–dry seasonal cycle; water levels, turbidity, and temperature fluctuate considerably across the year. Specific physico-chemical data for M. barrae microhabitats are not available in the published literature, and aquarium-husbandry parameters must therefore be inferred from the general envelope of the São Francisco system and the requirements of similarly sized Hypostominae.
Feeding
Like other large Hypostominae, Megalancistrus barrae is presumed to be an omnivorous grazer and opportunistic detritivore in the wild — rasping aufwuchs (the community of algae, diatoms, and associated invertebrates) from hard substrates and consuming organic detritus, invertebrates, and plant material depending on availability. The large, toothed sucking disc and robust dentition of Megalancistrus are consistent with a diet centred on hard-substrate scraping rather than wood-eating.
No stomach-content studies for wild M. barrae are available in the accessible literature. In the extremely rare aquarium examples, keepers have reported acceptance of algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional meaty foods such as prawn or mussel. The species' large size and robust build suggest significant daily food requirements. Water quality management in captivity must account for the correspondingly large waste output of an adult specimen.
Mating
No observations of mating behaviour in Megalancistrus barrae have been recorded in the published literature or in hobbyist documentation. By analogy with large Hypostominae generally, courtship likely involves male site-holding around rocky crevices or underhangs, with males displaying interopercular odontodes during agonistic and courtship interactions. The evertible odontodes of Megalancistrus are particularly conspicuous and may function as both an anti-predator defence and an intraspecific signal.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been formally described for this species. In large Hypostomus and related genera, males commonly develop more pronounced odontodes and broader heads than females, and breeding females become visibly distended in the abdominal region when gravid — patterns that may apply to M. barrae but remain unconfirmed.
Breeding
No breeding records for Megalancistrus barrae exist in the aquarium literature as of the available documentation. PlanetCatfish lists the species with no breeding report on file and records only three registered keepers worldwide — an indication of how exceptionally rarely this fish has entered the hobby. The species' very large adult size (16.5 in SL), combined with the logistical demands of maintaining São Francisco endemics outside their native range, makes captive breeding attempts extremely uncommon.
From the biology of large Hypostominae, cave or crevice spawning with paternal brood guarding is a plausible reproductive strategy, but no direct evidence supports this inference for M. barrae. Any future breeding records would be of significant scientific and hobbyist interest.
In the aquarium
Megalancistrus barrae is effectively absent from the mainstream ornamental trade and represents an extreme specialist acquisition. A fully grown adult at 16.5 in SL — larger than many Pterygoplichthys species — demands an aquarium of at minimum 130–210 US gal simply on space grounds, and the tank must be designed to cope with the formidable waste load of a 2 kg catfish. Robust filtration, frequent large water changes, and unobstructed flow across the bottom are prerequisites.
Hardscape should mimic the rocky São Francisco substrate: large boulders and smooth river stones with crevices the fish can wedge into. Driftwood can be included for cover but is not a dietary requirement in the way it is for xylophages such as Panaqolus or Panaque. Plants are largely irrelevant given the species' river-bottom habits and the high flow rates required.
Water temperature should track the tropical to sub-tropical range of the São Francisco — roughly 72–82 °F. The river is notably harder and more alkaline than Amazonian drainages; a pH of 7.0–7.8 and moderate hardness are appropriate. The fish's low resilience (FishBase estimates a population doubling time of 4.5–14 years) means that stress, disease, or poor conditions are particularly costly. Tankmates should be chosen carefully: the species' odontodes make it capable of inflicting damage on and receiving damage from other large, aggressive benthic fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Megalancistrus barrae as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting an absence of evidence for a decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. The species is endemic to the São Francisco River basin and is therefore exposed to all pressures affecting that system: hydroelectric development (including the longstanding Sobradinho and Itaparica reservoirs and various downstream impoundments), agricultural water abstraction, deforestation of riparian zones, and sand extraction from river beds.
FishBase assigns the species a low resilience rating, with a population doubling time of 4.5–14 years — the slower end of the loricariid life-history spectrum. This means that even moderate rates of fishing or habitat disruption can translate into population-level impacts over decadal timescales. The São Francisco is one of Brazil's most exploited rivers for subsistence and artisanal fisheries, and large benthic fish are disproportionately affected by both gill-net bycatch and habitat degradation.
The species has a moderate fishing vulnerability score per FishBase. No formal population size estimate is available, and the Least Concern assessment should be read cautiously given the endemism of the species and the ongoing and projected intensification of water use in the São Francisco basin.
