Hypostomus alatus was formally described by Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, in his Animaux nouveaux ou rares recueillis pendant l'expédition dans les parties centrales de l'Amérique du Sud (volume 2, page 41, Plate 20, fig. 1), from type material collected at the Rio Sabarã (Sabara), Minas Gerais State, Brazil — a tributary of the Rio das Velhas, itself a major left-bank affluent of the upper São Francisco. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus alatus as a valid species with FishBase identifier 48872.
The genus Hypostomus was established by Lacepède in 1803 and remains the most species-rich genus in the family Loricariidae, containing well over 130 valid species. Hypostomus is placed in the subfamily Hypostominae, one of five subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae recognised by Armbruster (2004). The genus is paraphyletic in several molecular analyses, and some workers have advocated splitting it into smaller units, though no broadly accepted revision has yet been implemented.
The species epithet alatus is the Latin adjective meaning 'winged', applied by Castelnau in reference to the conspicuously enlarged or elongated pectoral fin spines — a diagnostic character noted in his original description. No aquarium trade names or L-numbers have been assigned to this species.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 14 in for H. alatus, though this figure may reflect rare or outlier individuals; PlanetCatfish records a more conservative 10.5 in standard length (SL) for the species, and the discrepancy should be borne in mind when interpreting size data. The body follows the typical Hypostomus plan: dorsoventrally flattened, covered from snout to tail in overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows. The head is broad and depressed, with dorsally positioned eyes and a ventrally placed oral disc adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates.
The pectoral fin spines are notably developed — consistent with the species epithet alatus — giving the fish a slightly broader-shouldered silhouette than some congeners. Ground coloration is brown to olive-brown, typically with darker spots or mottling across the body and fins; precise patterning can vary with substrate colour and physiological state. The belly is pale and unscuted.
Sexual dimorphism is not formally described for this species, though as in most Hypostomus, breeding males typically develop interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and fine odontodes along the pectoral spines, which are absent or reduced in females. Habitat
Hypostomus alatus is documented primarily from the São Francisco basin in central-eastern Brazil, specifically the das Velhas drainage and the middle São Francisco proper. The São Francisco is one of Brazil's most important rivers, flowing roughly 2,559 mi through the semiarid northeastern sertão and the cerrado biome before reaching the Atlantic. The das Velhas, which drains much of central Minas Gerais including the type locality near Sabara, is a large clearwater tributary subject to marked seasonal flow variation.
As a benthopelagic, demersal freshwater species, H. alatus occupies the substrate zone of rivers — rocky riffles, boulder runs, and cobbled reaches where algal biofilm and periphyton accumulate on hard surfaces. The species is a facultative air-breather, capable of supplementing gill respiration with atmospheric air intake through the stomach, an adaptation common in Hypostomus and useful during low-oxygen dry-season conditions when water levels drop and dissolved oxygen can fall.

Hypostomus alatus is seldom available in the ornamental trade and is not an established hobby fish. Its potential maximum size — up to 14 in TL by FishBase records, though typically smaller in captivity — places it firmly in the large-pleco category, requiring a spacious aquarium of at least 80–105 US gal for a single adult to live comfortably. Its temperament toward other species is expected to be typical of large Hypostomus: peaceful with dissimilar fish but intolerant of conspecifics or other bottom-dwelling plecos in confined spaces.
Water conditions appropriate for the São Francisco basin origin would include warm temperatures in the range of approximately 72–82 °F and neutral to slightly alkaline pH; no specific chemistry data for this species have been published. Strong filtration and excellent water flow are important for a large benthic fish with a correspondingly large waste output.
The species should be provided with a varied diet of algae-based foods and blanched vegetables. Hard substrate and rockwork mimicking its natural riverbed habitat are preferable to a bare tank. Aquarists interested in this species would likely need to source it directly from importers handling Brazilian loricariids, as it does not appear in standard retail channels.
Conservation
