When Peters described this fish from the Río Paraná in 1881, he placed it in Pterygoplichthys as a matter of convenience — but Megalancistrus parananus is no common sailfin pleco. It is one of the most massively built loricariids in the La Plata drainage, reaching nearly 23.5 in in standard length, its flanks bristling with evertible interopercular odontodes that serve as its most distinctive field character. It inhabits the same great subtropical river system that Bonpland and Azara mapped, and demands the same respect for scale.

Taxonomy & naming

Megalancistrus parananus was described by Wilhelm Peters in 1881 in the Sitzungsberichte der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin (No. 2, for 15 February 1881, p. 17), based on a holotype (ZMB 11328) collected at Río Paraná near La Paz, Entre-Ríos, Argentina. Peters placed the species in Pterygoplichthys (Ancistrus); it was transferred by Isbrücker et al. (2001) to the newly erected genus Megalancistrus, which currently comprises this species plus M. barrae.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Megalancistrus parananus (Peters 1881) with distribution across the Paraguay, Paraná, and Uruguay River basins of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Several synonyms are recorded: Chaetostomus aculeatus and Chaetostomus gigas were based on the same or closely related material; after examination of the holotype of Pterygoplichthys (Ancistrus) parananus, it was established that Chaetostomus aculeatus belonged to this same species (Pignalberi 1970: 379), making it a junior synonym. Megalancistrus aculeatus and Megalancistrus gigas are also recorded as synonyms.

In the aquarium trade, two L-numbers apply: L113 was the original DATZ coding, and L234 represents a separately registered, pinkish or pale-coloured form occasionally seen (reportedly from the Pantanal region of Brazil and documented on PlanetCatfish as an albino/hypomelanistic variant). Morphometric studies confirm both trade forms as the same species.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 23 in SL (FishBase ref. 56003; PlanetCatfish data sheet), with total length figures reaching 23.5 in or slightly beyond. This makes M. parananus one of the largest Hypostominae plecos in the La Plata basin. The body is powerfully built, with the stocky, somewhat compressed profile typical of large plecos in rocky-bottom environments.

The defining identification character of the genus — explicitly noted in the PlanetCatfish data sheet — is the presence of evertible interopercular odontodes: a fan of enlarged, spine-like outgrowths on the interopercular region that can be extended outward when the fish is agitated or handling. These odontodes, prominent in both sexes but more developed in mature males, differentiate Megalancistrus from other superficially similar large Hypostominae. The body is further covered in the usual loricariid scutes, heavily keeled along the flanks. Dorsal fin ray count is high (between 10 and 12 soft rays), which distinguishes the genus from the closely related Pseudacanthicus (ScotCat).

Colouration in wild-type L113 individuals is dark brown to grey-brown with a pattern of scattered pale spots or irregular pale reticulations on juveniles, which become less distinct on large adults that may appear nearly uniformly dark. The L234 form ('pink type' or 'albino from Pantanal') shows a reduced melanin phenotype: pale tan or pinkish ground colour with white or cream spotting. Sexual dimorphism: males develop broader heads, longer pectoral fin spines, more slender bodies relative to length, and denser, longer odontodes particularly around the gill cover area (ScotCat).

Habitat

Megalancistrus parananus is a large-river specialist confined to the La Plata drainage system: the Paraguay, Paraná, and Uruguay river basins of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay (CoF 2026; FishBase). The type locality — Río Paraná at La Paz, Entre-Ríos, Argentina — anchors it to the mid-to-lower Paraná. PlanetCatfish records extend the distribution to the Pantanal tributaries via the Paraguay River drainage.

Microhabitat is strongly associated with hard substrates in flowing water: rocky outcrops, boulder fields, and large cobble in main channels and large tributaries with moderate to swift currents. FishBase characterises the species as demersal and notes a temperate rather than tropical climate zone, reflecting the La Plata's cooler, seasonally variable conditions: water temperatures of 68–81 °F (ScotCat data), dropping considerably in the austral winter in the Argentine portions of its range. pH of 6.0–7.5 and moderately soft to hard water are documented; the Paraná is a naturally whitewater system with somewhat higher mineral content than Amazonian blackwater.

The species' large body size and powerful musculature are consistent with occupation of higher-energy microhabitats than most loricariids. The La Plata drainage experiences large seasonal fluctuations in flow and water level, and adults move with these cycles.

Feeding

Megalancistrus parananus is an omnivore with a broad diet. ScotCat describes an aquarium diet of frozen brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, shrimps, mussels, fish flesh, dried foods, and green foods — reflecting the species' willingness to take both animal protein and plant material. In nature, the feeding ecology has not been studied in detail, but the combination of large size, robust jaws, and rocky-bottom habitat suggests a diet of algae and periphyton scraped from rock surfaces, aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, molluscs, crustaceans), and detritus. The Aqualog.de profile notes a minimum tank size of 78.5–157.5 in length, appropriate to the animal's bulk and active foraging behaviour.

In captivity, a mixed omnivore approach is recommended: high-quality sinking pellets and algae wafers as the staple, supplemented by blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, kale, spinach) and regular protein offerings (frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, fresh mussels or prawns). Given the species' temperate-adapted physiology, a slightly cooler diet regime is appropriate — very high plant content without adequate protein may result in slower growth and reduced condition. Large specimens have substantial food requirements; underfeeding is a common error with large plecos kept in spacious aquaria.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in Megalancistrus parananus has not been formally described in the scientific literature, and no captive breeding reports exist on PlanetCatfish as of 2026. The species is listed as rare in captivity with only 10 registered keepers on the PlanetCatfish database, reflecting limited hobbyist experience. Inferences about mating must draw on the pronounced sexual dimorphism and comparisons with better-studied Hypostominae relatives.

Males develop notably broader heads, longer pectoral fin spines, and more elaborate interopercular odontodes than females (ScotCat; PlanetCatfish). These structures are consistent with male-male competition and mate display. The genus is described as territorial (ScotCat: 'a territorial species'), and in large loricariids of this guild, males typically secure and defend cave or crevice den sites, using their physical armature both in threat display and in direct contact combat. Ripe females are presumably identified by the male through visual cues (broader abdomen) and chemical signals.

In the Paraná, seasonal variation in temperature, flow, and water chemistry provides natural breeding cues. The austral spring warming — water temperatures rising from 64–68 °F in winter to 77–81 °F in summer — is the most likely seasonal trigger for reproductive activity.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Megalancistrus parananus remains undocumented as of 2026. The PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog records no breeding report, and the combination of large adult size, territorial requirements, and an assumed slow maturation rate places successful captive reproduction firmly in the domain of extremely well-equipped specialist facilities or dedicated breeders.

From the biology of related large Hypostominae, M. parananus is presumed to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood guarding. The male would secure and defend a large crevice or cave in rocky substrate; the female deposits eggs inside and the male fans and guards the clutch. Clutch size in related large plecos can be substantial — potentially several hundred eggs — but developmental time and fry vulnerability are also greater than in smaller species. The FishBase resilience estimate of 'Very Low' (minimum population doubling time greater than 14 years) reflects the slow intrinsic population growth rate common in large, slow-maturing loricariids.

Achieving spawning in captivity would require a very large system (likely 1,500+ litres), spacious rock caves sized for a 50+ cm fish, and careful temperature cycling to simulate La Plata seasonal conditions — gradual temperature reduction to 64–68 °F over winter, followed by a warming period with increased feeding intensity in spring.

In the aquarium

Megalancistrus parananus is one of the most demanding pleco species available to the hobbyist and is strictly suited to specialists with the infrastructure to house it appropriately. At nearly 23.5 in SL and a highly territorial adult temperament, the absolute minimum aquarium footprint would be 157.5 in in length; most experienced keepers recommend 500+ cm and 1,000+ litres. A single adult is the appropriate occupant of any system of ordinary hobbyist scale; attempting to keep two adults together requires a very large tank with multiple separated cave territories.

The Aqualog Back to Nature guide to L-catfishes (Seidel, 2008) cites a minimum tank of 78.5–157.5 in length, confirming the exceptional space requirement. The species tolerates the cooler, seasonally variable conditions of its La Plata origin: temperature 68–81 °F (winter reduction to 64 °F acceptable and may promote natural behaviour), pH 6.0–7.5, moderately soft to hard water. Strong filtration and vigorous oxygenation are mandatory — a fish this size produces proportionate waste, and clean water is essential for the health of the odontodes and skin.

Decoration must include one or more large, stable cave structures sized for a 50+ cm fish. Flat rock slabs or large ceramic tubes serve well; driftwood provides additional foraging surfaces. Tankmates should be confined to robust species of the mid and upper water column: large characins (dorado, pacu), Arawana, or large cichlids that respect bottom territory. Any bottom-dwelling fish risks territorial aggression. The L234 pinkish form commands premium prices and is sought by specialist collectors; both forms are cared for identically. Handling is hazardous — the evertible interopercular odontodes and large pectoral spines can inflict significant puncture wounds.

Conservation

Megalancistrus parananus was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List in 2020 (assessed 21 November 2020; Salvador 2023 assessment linked via FishBase version 2025-2). The IUCN notes that despite limited available information on this species, its wide range across the Paraguay, Paraná, and Uruguay basins and the absence of apparent major threats support this status.

However, relevant pressures exist within the La Plata basin. M. parananus occupies large-river rocky habitats in a drainage that has been heavily modified by navigation improvements, dredging, bank stabilisation, and hydroelectric impoundments. The Paraná's natural geomorphology — seasonal flooding, shifting sand bars, and dynamic rock substrate communities — has been substantially altered by the Itaipu (Brazil/Paraguay) and Yacyretá (Argentina/Paraguay) dams, and by ongoing river regulation. Rocky rapids and riffle habitats, which appear to be the species' core microhabitat, have been inundated at multiple sites.

The FishBase resilience estimate of 'Very Low' and fishing vulnerability of 49 out of 100 (moderate to high) reflect a species with limited capacity for rapid recovery. No ornamental trade pressure data are available; given the small number of registered keepers on PlanetCatfish and the demanding aquarium requirements, trade volumes are likely modest. Continued monitoring of La Plata riparian habitat quality and any targeted survey work to establish population baselines would be worthwhile given the species' apparently slow life-history pace.
