Taxonomy & naming
Neoplecostomus paranensis was described by Francisco Langeani in 1990 in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS, Série Zoologia 3(1): 12, based on specimens collected at the Rio Cubatão, upper Paraná River system, at Fazenda Santa Carlota, Cajurú, São Paulo state, Brazil. The holotype (MZUSP 38572) and numerous paratypes are deposited at MZUSP and ZMA. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) recognises Neoplecostomus paranensis Langeani 1990 as a valid species with no synonyms.
The genus Neoplecostomus was established by Eigenmann & Eigenmann (1888) and contains roughly a dozen species of small, benthic loricariids from coastal Atlantic drainages and the Paraná–Paraguay system of Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes places the genus in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, a placement also followed by FishBase. (Some earlier literature assigns Neoplecostomus to Neoplecostominae, but this name is generally treated as a synonym of or junior grouping within Hypoptopomatinae under the current CoF classification.)
The species was redescribed by Zawadzki et al. (2008) when three new congeners from the upper Paraná were described; the redescription provides updated morphometrics and meristics, and clarifies the distinctiveness of N. paranensis based on the reduced or absent adipose fin. Andrade & Langeani (2014) and subsequent authors continue to treat the species as valid. The species carries no L-number and is not a regular component of the ornamental trade.
Morphology
Neoplecostomus paranensis is a small loricariid; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4 in SL (male/unsexed), while other literature cites 3.5 in SL. The body is compact and dorsoventrally flattened, covered in the characteristic bony scutes of loricariids. The head is broad and depressed, with the ventral mouth positioned for close-contact benthic grazing.
The single most diagnostically useful character of this species among its congeners is the absence or marked reduction of the adipose fin. In all three new Neoplecostomus species described by Zawadzki et al. (2008) from the same basin, the adipose fin is well-developed; the absence or vestigiality of this fin in N. paranensis is used as the primary character to separate it from those taxa. Coloration in preserved specimens is typically a brownish ground colour with small, irregularly distributed dark blotches or spots; live coloration is poorly documented in the published literature available for this account.
Dorsal fin counts and other meristic data are provided in Langeani (1990) and Zawadzki et al. (2008); exact counts are not repeated here because they have not been independently verified from primary sources held by this project. Sexual dimorphism in N. paranensis is not well characterised.
Habitat
Neoplecostomus paranensis inhabits tributaries of the upper Paraná River basin, specifically the Grande and Paranapanema river sub-basins in São Paulo state, Brazil (CoF distribution statement). The type locality, the Rio Cubatão at Cajurú (upper Paraná system), is a clear-water São Paulo upland stream with rock and gravel substrate — representative of the headwater environments that characterise the genus across its range.
Neoplecostomus species generally occupy fast-flowing, shallow streams and riffles with hard substrate, where they feed on periphyton. The upper Paraná tributaries in São Paulo lie mostly in the Cerrado-Atlantic Forest transition zone, at altitudes typically between 400 and 2953 ft. Water in these streams is generally soft, mildly acidic to neutral, and cool relative to Amazonian lowland rivers; seasonal fluctuations in temperature and water level are pronounced, with lower flows and higher temperatures in the dry austral winter (June–September) and higher, faster flows in summer.
Occurrences in the Paranapanema basin (Zawadzki et al. 2008, Andrade & Langeani 2014) suggest the species has a wider footprint in the upper Paraná headwaters than the type locality alone implies. It is not known from the lower Paraná or Paraguay systems.
Feeding
Based on the benthic morphology and broader ecology of Neoplecostomus, N. paranensis is understood to be an algal scraper and periphyton grazer. The ventral suckermouth and fine teeth are adapted for rasping diatoms, filamentous algae, and associated microbial biofilm from rocky and gravelly substrate in flowing water. No stomach-content studies specific to this species have been published in sources reviewed for this account.
Comparative data from related Neoplecostominae and Hypoptopomatinae (including the better-studied genus Otocinclus, which belongs to a related but distinct lineage) suggest these fish rely heavily on epilithic algae and periphyton and supplement with fine organic detritus where available. In captivity, algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, and aufwuchs growth on mature rocks are likely appropriate. Meat-based foods should be minimal given the inferred herbivorous bias.
Mating
No behavioural observations of courtship or mating in Neoplecostomus paranensis appear in the primary or hobby literature reviewed for this article. The reproductive biology of the genus Neoplecostomus is essentially undescribed at this level of detail. By analogy with other small, rheophilic loricariids in the broader Hypoptopomatinae, males may be territorial around rock crevices or small cave sites; males of many loricariids develop more pronounced odontodes or genital papillae that allow sex determination in breeding condition.
Hobbyists attempting to keep this species should regard any courtship observations as potentially novel and worth documenting. No captive breeding reports have been located.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Neoplecostomus paranensis have been located in sources reviewed for this article. The genus Neoplecostomus as a whole is essentially unrepresented in the ornamental trade and has attracted little captive breeding effort. Wild reproductive biology is also undescribed in detail.
Loricariids in the broader Hypoptopomatinae typically reproduce via adhesive egg masses deposited on hard substrate — rocks, submerged wood, or glass — in areas of moderate current, with varying degrees of parental guarding depending on the lineage. Whether N. paranensis follows this model or uses a cavity spawning strategy remains unknown. The species' IUCN Least Concern status and endemic presence in São Paulo state headwaters suggests adequate wild populations currently, but the lack of life-history data is a gap in knowledge that limits conservation assessments.
In the aquarium
Neoplecostomus paranensis is a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium regular: it lacks an L-number, is not collected for the trade, and appears in the aquarium literature only incidentally when Neoplecostomus as a genus is discussed. Any specimen in captivity would almost certainly be a research or incidental collection animal.
For a keeper with access to specimens, conditions should replicate the upper Paraná headwaters: cool water (68–75 °F), soft to moderately hard (pH 6.8–7.4), with good oxygen levels maintained by surface agitation or a powerhead. The tank should include smooth river cobbles, fine-grained gravel, and a low-nutrient water column — turbid or nutrient-rich conditions are likely to cause chronic stress. Moderate current replicating a headwater riffle is appropriate.
The species' small size (under 4 in) means a 60–80-litre species tank could accommodate a small group if territories on rock substrate are adequate. Tankmates from the same or similar drainages — small Brazilian Characidae or Heptapteridae — would be ecologically appropriate. Feeding should focus on algae-based foods. Given the species' endemic, restricted distribution and the sensitivity of São Paulo headwaters to land-use change, wild-caught specimens should not be kept without appropriate legal collection and import permits.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Neoplecostomus paranensis as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting an apparently stable, if localised, distribution across the upper Paraná headwaters. The species is endemic to Brazil and restricted to the Grande and Paranapanema river sub-basins in São Paulo state, both of which have experienced significant land-use change over the past century associated with coffee, sugarcane, and soya cultivation, as well as the expansion of the cities of Ribeirão Preto, Bauru, and others.
Headwater streams in these basins are particularly vulnerable to riparian deforestation, which increases sedimentation and water temperature, removes cover, and destabilises flow regimes — all potentially adverse for a benthic algal grazer dependent on clean, rock-strewn riffles. Several hydroelectric reservoirs in the upper Paraná watershed have altered connectivity and thermal conditions in São Paulo rivers. While the current IUCN assessment is Least Concern, continued monitoring is warranted given the endemic range and the ongoing pressures on upper Paraná headwaters.
