Taxonomy & naming
Neoplecostomus ribeirensis was described by Francisco Langeani in 1990 in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 3, number 1, page 19). The holotype (MZUSP 38576) was collected from a stream off the Rio Bananal, Ribeira River basin, approximately 4 mi from the Rodovia Biguá–Iguapé, São Paulo state, Brazil. Paratypes are deposited at MZUSP and ZMA. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid with no synonyms.
Langeani described four Neoplecostomus species in the same paper — N. ribeirensis, N. paranensis, N. espiritosantensis, and N. franciscoensis — each named for its type drainage. The genus Neoplecostomus had been established earlier to accommodate small rheophilic loricariids of the south-central Brazilian highlands that differed from related genera in dentition and body proportions.
Classification of the genus at the subfamilial level has varied among authorities. The original descriptions, FishBase, and some systematic treatments place Neoplecostomus in Neoplecostominae, a small subfamily erected specifically for this and closely related genera. For consistency with the site's existing facet structure, this species is filed under Hypoptopomatinae, which is where some broader loricariid phylogenies have accommodated the Neoplecostominae lineage. Readers consulting the primary literature should be aware of this discrepancy.
Morphology
Like its congeners, N. ribeirensis is a small, fully armoured loricariid reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL). The body is covered with overlapping bony scutes arranged in the typical loricariid pattern, providing protection in the high-energy stream environments the genus inhabits. The ventral surface is flattened and unarmoured, adapted for adherence to rock surfaces in fast current.
The mouth is positioned ventrally and is adapted for scraping — teeth are used to rasp periphyton, algae, and organic films from hard rocky substrates. Published data on colouration and detailed fin counts specific to N. ribeirensis are sparse in the accessible literature; the genus as a whole tends toward muted brown or grey tones that provide camouflage against rocky stream beds.
Sexual dimorphism in Neoplecostomus has been studied in at least one congener (N. microps), where males reach larger sizes and attain sexual maturity earlier than females. Whether the same pattern holds in N. ribeirensis has not been confirmed in published sources reviewed here.
Habitat
Neoplecostomus ribeirensis is endemic to the Ribeira de Iguape basin, an Atlantic-slope drainage in São Paulo state, Brazil. Survey data from the Açungui sub-basin confirm its presence through electrofishing in 70-metre stream transects. The species inhabits the serranias costeiras — the coastal mountain ranges of the Atlantic Forest — where upland headwater streams are characterised by clear, fast-flowing water, crystalline rock substrates, and high dissolved oxygen. Elevations in the Ribeira de Iguape headwaters range from roughly 125 ft to over 2297 ft above sea level, and Neoplecostomus in this system favours the faster, rockier reaches.
These streams drain remnant Atlantic Forest, one of the most biodiverse and threatened biomes in the world. Water is typically cool and clear, with low conductivity and negligible turbidity during base flow. No published temperature or pH data specific to N. ribeirensis collection sites were available at the time of writing, but the conditions are consistent with other Neoplecostomus habitats: cool, well-oxygenated, oligotrophic upland streams.
Feeding
Neoplecostomus ribeirensis is presumed to feed as a periphyton and biofilm grazer, consistent with the foraging ecology documented for the genus more broadly. The ventrally placed, scraping dentition and rocky fast-water habitat point to a diet of algae, diatoms, and the associated detrital and microbial films that colonise submerged rock surfaces — a feeding strategy common throughout Loricariidae.
No dietary studies specific to N. ribeirensis appear in the sources reviewed. Generalisation from Neoplecostominae ecology is reasonable here: these are small, benthic grazers occupying oligotrophic upland streams where aquatic macrophytes are sparse and rocky biofilm is the dominant food resource.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in N. ribeirensis has not been described in the published literature. By analogy with related loricariids from comparable habitats, courtship likely involves male territory establishment around suitable spawning sites within the stream — rocky crevices or the undersides of boulders in sheltered pockets of reduced current. No aquarium breeding records for this species are known.
Breeding
No breeding data are available for Neoplecostomus ribeirensis in either the wild or captivity. The species has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity, and no aquarium breeding accounts appear in the sources reviewed. General loricariid patterns — egg adhesion to hard substrate with some form of parental guarding — are plausible but unconfirmed for this taxon. In the aquarium
Neoplecostomus ribeirensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. The species has no assigned L-number or popular common name, and no commercial export from its range is documented. Its absence from the hobby reflects both its restricted endemic distribution in a non-trade region of São Paulo state and its probable unsuitability for standard aquarium conditions: a rheophilic species from cold, fast-flowing Atlantic Forest headwaters would require highly oxygenated, cool water with strong current — conditions demanding specialist equipment and commitment.
For hobbyists who might encounter this species through scientific contact or live specimen export in the future, the appropriate care framework would be similar to that for other small rheophilic loricariids from upland South American streams: strong filtration and circulation, rocky aquascape with smooth boulders and minimal fine sediment, cool temperatures (likely 64–75 °F based on habitat elevation and latitude), low to moderate hardness, and a diet of high-quality algae wafers and blanched vegetables. These figures are inferred from habitat data, not captive experience.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Neoplecostomus ribeirensis as Least Concern in 2018, indicating no evidence of population-level decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category at the time of assessment. The species is endemic to the Ribeira de Iguape basin, placing its entire range within a single river system — a geographic restriction that makes it inherently more vulnerable to localised threats than more widely distributed taxa.
The Ribeira de Iguape basin retains some of the largest remaining tracts of Atlantic Forest in São Paulo state, but the biome as a whole has been reduced to less than 15 percent of its original extent. Pressures including agricultural encroachment, riparian deforestation, sedimentation, and water abstraction pose ongoing risks to the headwater stream habitats on which this species depends. The species is not exploited by the ornamental trade. Continued monitoring of upland Atlantic Forest stream communities would be warranted given the restricted range and habitat sensitivity.
