Taxonomy & naming
Otocinclus arnoldi was originally described by Regan in 1909 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 8, volume 3, number 14, page 234), with the type locality recorded as 'La Plata' — a reference to the Río de la Plata system of southern South America. For most of the twentieth century the species was treated as a junior synonym of Otocinclus flexilis Cope, 1894, and was largely absent from specialist literature as a valid taxon.
In 2010, Lehmann A., Mayer, and Reis re-examined the osteology and meristics of the O. flexilis species complex and formally re-validated O. arnoldi in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, number 1, pages 57–68). The key characters distinguishing O. arnoldi from all congeners except O. mimulus are the possession of only 5 (rather than the usual 6) pectoral branched rays, and an osteological feature in which the prootic bone is involved in the articular contact with the hyomandibular condyle — a state not seen in most other Otocinclus. O. arnoldi differs from the closely related O. mimulus by the absence of an elevated patch of enlarged odontodes on the postero-dorsal parietosupraoccipital tip, and by having 15 caudal vertebrae (versus 16–17 in O. mimulus).
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Otocinclus arnoldi Regan, 1909 as a valid species. The species is named in honour of Johann Paul Arnold (1869–1952), a German aquarist based in Hamburg who provided specimens for study.
Morphology
Otocinclus arnoldi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in SL, placing it at the larger end of the genus. The body form is elongated and compressed, with the characteristic loricariid armour of keeled bony scutes. The ventrally positioned sucker mouth bears fine, multi-cusped teeth adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces.
The diagnostic meristic character is the pectoral fin: O. arnoldi (and the closely related O. mimulus) has only 5 branched pectoral rays, whereas virtually all other Otocinclus have 6. This is not directly visible in a living fish without detailed examination, but it is a reliable anatomical separator from the morphologically similar O. flexilis with which it was long confused. Colour pattern follows the typical oto plan: a dark midlateral stripe running from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle, a pale ventral region, and subdued overall colouring.
As in other Otocinclus, females are larger and markedly broader than males in the abdominal region when viewed from above, particularly when gravid.
Habitat
Otocinclus arnoldi is a fish of the La Plata river system and adjacent drainages in subtropical South America. Its confirmed range spans the lower Río Paraná, the lower and middle Río Uruguai, and the Río de la Plata proper, encompassing parts of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Field photographs document its presence in tributaries of the Río Uruguay in Corrientes Province, Argentina.
This is a subtropical rather than tropical species, reflecting its distribution in the temperate-influenced southern cone. Water temperatures in the Paraná–Uruguai system vary seasonally, cooling significantly in austral winter. Small Otocinclus typically occupy shallow margins and vegetated areas where biofilm and soft algae develop on submerged surfaces in moderate current.
Feeding
Like all members of the genus, Otocinclus arnoldi is an aufwuchs micro-grazer. It feeds by applying its sucker mouth to hard surfaces — leaves, rocks, wood, glass — and rasping off soft algae, diatoms, biofilm, and associated organic matter. The fine, multi-cusped teeth are well-suited to gentle abrasion of delicate algae films without damaging the underlying substrate.
In the aquarium, a planted tank with established algae growth provides the ideal feeding environment. Where natural algae are insufficient, supplemental foods should include algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini) or cucumber. Protein-rich foods are not a significant part of the natural diet.
Mating
Detailed courtship observations for Otocinclus arnoldi specifically are not published, but the genus follows a well-documented pattern across species. Males actively pursue females, engaging in rapid chasing behaviour through the tank. Courtship is brief and non-territorial: no site preparation or male display is involved. A conditioned, gravid female is visibly wider in the abdomen than the male — the primary visual cue distinguishing the sexes at breeding time.
Fry photographs registered on PlanetCatfish — showing newly hatched, 2-day-old, and 7-day-old juveniles — confirm that captive reproduction is at least occasionally observed, even if no formal breeding reports are on record.
Breeding
Formal breeding reports for Otocinclus arnoldi are not documented in the aquarium literature or on PlanetCatfish, though photographic evidence of fry at multiple developmental stages indicates the species has been bred in captivity. Based on the well-documented breeding of congeners, the pattern is expected to be consistent with the genus.
Otocinclus species spawn adhesive eggs in small batches on plant leaves, glass panes, or other smooth surfaces. No nest is built and no parental care is provided. Incubation is brief — typically a few days at appropriate temperatures. Fry emerge extremely small and require very fine algae-based food to survive. Conditioning adults on a rich vegetable diet, ensuring the tank has mature biofilm, and mimicking seasonal temperature fluctuation may promote spawning attempts.
In the aquarium
Otocinclus arnoldi is a rare fish in the trade and is rarely sold separately from other Otocinclus species, most of which are imported as mixed consignments under the general name 'oto' or 'dwarf suckermouth'. In practice it is likely occasional in shipments from the La Plata region, but rarely identified to species level by importers or retailers.
As a subtropical fish, O. arnoldi may tolerate lower temperatures than tropical Amazonian otos — consistent with its native range in the southern Paraná–Uruguai system where water temperatures drop seasonally. A range of approximately 64–79 °F is likely appropriate, though precise data from the wild are not documented in the sources available.
General Otocinclus husbandry applies: the species should be kept in groups of at least six, in a stable, mature aquarium with established biofilm and algae growth. New specimens are vulnerable to poor water quality and the stress of acclimatisation. Tankmates should be small and peaceful. Supplemental algae-based feeding is essential. The combination of sensitive acclimation, shoaling requirement, and need for established algae is the core husbandry challenge for all otos.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus arnoldi as Least Concern (LC), most recently in November 2020. The species has a relatively broad distribution across the La Plata river system — spanning Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay — and no evidence of significant population decline has been identified. Its re-validation in 2010 means that historical collection and trade records attributing specimens to O. flexilis may include this species, making precise abundance data difficult to establish.
The Paraná–Uruguai system as a whole faces pressures including hydroelectric development, agricultural runoff, and urbanisation along the La Plata estuary corridor. These are not currently considered sufficient to threaten O. arnoldi at a species level, but monitoring of the lower Paraná and Uruguai drainages is warranted given the scale of development in the region.
