At barely 1 in standard length, Otocinclus bororo is one of the smallest valid species in an already diminutive genus. Named for the Bororo people of Mato Grosso and described from the clear, warm streams and wetland channels of the upper Paraguay basin, it is a devoted algae grazer that earns its place in planted aquaria — but only when kept in groups large enough to buffer the stress that makes lone otos wither.

Taxonomy & naming

Otocinclus bororo was described by Stewart A. Schaefer in 1997 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 148, p. 69, fig. 43), from specimens collected at a stream crossing the road between Barra do Bugres and Cáceres, approximately 15°20'S, 57°12'W, Mato Grosso State, Brazil — within the upper Paraguay drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Otocinclus bororo Schaefer, 1997 with no synonyms.

Schaefer's 1997 monograph revised the entire genus Otocinclus and remains the foundational systematic reference. In that work, O. bororo was assigned to a clade (clade B of Schaefer 1997: 103) that includes O. mariae, O. mura, O. affinis, and related species — a group distinguished by shared derived characters of the cephalic lateral-line system and body shape. Subsequent work, including the description of O. batmani (Lehmann et al. 2010), has refined relationships within this clade.

Otocinclus belongs to the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae (Armbruster 2004), the same subfamily as Parotocinclus and related dwarf loricariids, and the tribe containing these small algae-grazing catfishes is nested within a broader loricariid framework. Otocinclus carries no L-number or LDA number.

Morphology

Otocinclus bororo reaches 1 in standard length (SL) — one of the smallest members of the genus — with total length in the field around 1.5 in. The body profile is typical for Otocinclus: dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad, rounded snout and a ventral suckermouth; bony scutes covering the flanks in the loricariid pattern; and a relatively large, rounded eye set high on the head.

Coloration in O. bororo is a pale tan to beige ground with a dark mid-lateral stripe running from the snout tip, through the eye, and continuing to the caudal peduncle where it typically terminates in a small, distinct spot at the base of the caudal fin. The stripe is bordered above by a pale zone. Scattered dark chromatophores may appear on the dorsum. The ventral surface is whitish. The caudal fin itself is clear to very lightly pigmented, and the other fins are largely hyaline.

As in all Otocinclus, sexual dimorphism is subtle but reliable. Females are noticeably larger and broader than males when viewed from above (PlanetCatfish), particularly when in spawning condition. This wider body profile in females, visible from above when fish are feeding on a flat glass surface, is the most practical field identification method. Genital papilla examination provides a definitive check for experienced observers.

Habitat

Otocinclus bororo is native to the upper Paraguay River basin in central Brazil. The type locality is near Barra do Bugres in Mato Grosso, and the species has been recorded from the Paraná and upper Paraguay drainage systems broadly, including the Pantanal periphery (PlanetCatfish; FishBase). River images from the Rio Formoso and Rio da Prata, both in Mato Grosso do Sul — classic crystal-clear limestone streams feeding into the Pantanal — show wild adults, indicating a preference for clear, shallow, warm water over plants and submerged vegetation.

The upper Paraguay basin streams inhabited by O. bororo are generally clear, spring-fed in many places, with warm temperatures (75–82 °F year-round), slightly soft to moderately hard water, and neutral to mildly alkaline pH — conditions driven by the cerrado and Pantanal-fringe geology. Submergent aquatic plants such as Egeria, Cabomba, and Potamogeton are common in such streams, and O. bororo is typically found grazing the plant surfaces and glass-like rocks in areas of gentle to moderate current.

Feeding

Otocinclus bororo is an algae grazer with a broadly herbivorous diet. In the wild it feeds on periphyton — the thin community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and organic detritus that colonises aquatic plant leaves, rock surfaces, and submerged wood. The fine, comblike teeth of Otocinclus are well adapted to this mode, allowing precise removal of the thin biofilm without damaging plant tissue beneath.

In the aquarium, a consistent supply of algae is critical. O. bororo will graze green algae and brown diatoms from glass, equipment, and plant leaves. However, in a clean, mature tank with minimal algae, supplemental feeding is essential to prevent starvation — a common cause of death in newly introduced otos. Blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, spinach, kale) cut into thin rounds and anchored to the substrate provide reliable nutrition. Algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and sinking pellets with high vegetable content are accepted. Live or fresh-grown algae on ceramic tiles or rocks placed in a sunny window and then introduced to the tank is an excellent supplement. This species is not a predator and shows no interest in meaty foods under normal circumstances.

Mating

Breeding in Otocinclus bororo has not been reported on PlanetCatfish as of the date of this writing, but spawning behaviour in the genus is well characterised for other species (particularly O. affinis and O. vittatus) and can be used as a guide. Breeding in Otocinclus follows a brief, active courtship in which the male pursues the female closely, often pressing against her sides in a characteristic T-position prior to egg deposition.

Conditioning is best achieved by keeping a group of at least six to ten individuals — otos are strongly social fish and individuals kept in very small groups rarely thrive or breed. A varied vegetable-rich diet and regular 20–25% water changes that slightly cool the water (mimicking seasonal inflow of cooler, fresher water in the Paraguay basin) appear to stimulate reproductive activity. Females in spawning condition are visibly broader than males when viewed from above, and this is the most accessible sexing method for the keeper.

Breeding

While no PlanetCatfish breeding log exists for O. bororo specifically, the spawning mode of Otocinclus is well documented through accounts of the more commonly bred O. affinis and O. vestitus. Eggs are deposited singly or in small groups on smooth leaf or glass surfaces, often in a scattered pattern. The eggs are small, adhesive, and pale, and neither parent guards them after deposition — Otocinclus provide no parental care beyond the fertilisation act itself.

Incubation takes approximately 2–3 days at typical tank temperatures of 75–79 °F. The larvae are tiny and transparent on hatching, subsisting initially on the yolk sac, then transitioning to fine algae and infusoria. Finely crushed algae wafer powder or commercial micro-fry foods can supplement the diet in the early days. The challenge with breeding O. bororo in particular lies in the species' rarity in the trade and the tendency for most imported otos to arrive stressed and in poor condition; establishing healthy breeding groups first requires investment in proper acclimation, quarantine, and a mature, algae-rich system.

In the aquarium

Otocinclus bororo is suited to aquaria of 15 US gal and upward, kept in groups of at least six — ideally ten or more — as the species is strongly gregarious and suffers from the isolation stress that affects lone individuals. A planted aquarium with soft green algae on the glass is the ideal setting. The fish will spend most of its time grazing plant leaves, glass, and smooth hardscape.

Water parameters should reflect the upper Paraguay basin origin: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.8, and moderate hardness. The species is not markedly sensitive within this range, but it is sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and elevated nitrate — clean, well-cycled water is the single most important husbandry factor. Weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are advisable.

Otocinclus bororo is notably peaceful and poses no threat to plants, tankmates, or eggs of other species. It is frequently kept alongside dwarf cichlids, small tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras. Avoid keeping it with aggressive bottom dwellers or fish large enough to swallow it. Larger plecos (Pterygoplichthys, Hypostomus) may compete for surface space on the glass and stress smaller Otocinclus. The species is sometimes sold mixed with O. affinis or O. vittatus in the trade; distinguishing bororo by its smaller size, confined stripe pattern, and Paraguay basin provenance requires some care.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Otocinclus bororo as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a reasonably broad distribution within the upper Paraguay basin and no evidence of population decline. The upper Paraguay drainage includes significant wild fish collecting for the aquarium trade — a large proportion of 'otocinclus' sold globally come from this region — and O. bororo is likely collected as part of these shipments, though most trade records do not distinguish species.

The Pantanal and its tributaries face serious long-term threats from agricultural expansion, particularly soybean cultivation and cattle ranching in the Cerrado headwater zones that filter water into the clear streams O. bororo inhabits. Deforestation, sedimentation, and pesticide runoff into these spring-fed streams could degrade the clear, plant-rich habitat the species depends on. At present the Least Concern rating is defensible, but the broader pattern of habitat change in the upper Paraguay catchment is a reason to monitor the situation.
