Taxonomy & naming
Otothyris lophophanes was first described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889 in West American Scientist (volume 6, number 42, page 9), under the original combination Rhinelepis lophophanes, from type material from Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The species accumulated multiple synonyms as authors independently described what proved to be the same or closely related populations: Microlepidogaster lophophanes, Otocinclus cephalacanthus, Otocinclus lophophanes, Otothyris canaliferus, and Otothyris cephalacanthus are all now treated as synonyms of Otothyris lophophanes.
The valid genus Otothyris was erected by Myers (1927). Its systematics were comprehensively revised by Garavello, Britski and Schaefer (1998) in American Museum Novitates (3222: 1–19), the definitive authority for the genus, which recognises four valid species: juquiae, lophophanes, rostrata, and travassosi. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Otothyris lophophanes (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) as the valid combination.
The genus name Otothyris is formed from the Greek ous/otis (ear) and thyra/thyris (a little door or opening), referring to a morphological feature of the head region. The species epithet lophophanes is derived from the Greek lophos (crest or tuft) and phainein (to appear or show), referring to some crested or ridged feature of the type material.
Morphology
Otothyris lophophanes is a minute loricariid, reaching a maximum of 1 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (reference 36885); PlanetCatfish records 1 in SL for measured specimens. The body is elongated in form (FishBase records body shape as elongated), covered in overlapping bony scutes across the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with an unplated ventral surface as typical of hypoptopomatines.
The dorsal fin has 8 soft rays and the anal fin has 6 soft rays per FishBase. The disc-like ventrally positioned mouth is adapted for adhering to and rasping hard surfaces. Colouration is brown — as the common name suggests — often with darker patterning providing camouflage against the rocky or detrital substrates of its hill-stream habitat.
Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised for this species in the published literature.
Habitat
Otothyris lophophanes is restricted to the Atlantic coastal drainages of Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The type locality is Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. The rivers of this coastal strip are relatively short, draining the steep seaward face of the Serra do Mar mountain range directly to the Atlantic — they are fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, and typically cool in their upland sections.
FishBase records water parameters for the species of pH 6.0–7.0, hardness 10–15 dH, and temperature 68–75 °F, reflecting the cool, soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions characteristic of Atlantic coastal hill streams. These streams are shaded by Atlantic Forest vegetation and receive minimal dissolved solids. The species is likely associated with rocky, hard substrates in moderate to fast current where biofilm accumulates.
O. lophophanes is reported as a facultative air-breather, capable of taking atmospheric oxygen — an adaptive capacity relevant during seasonal low-oxygen conditions in warmer, shallower reaches.
Feeding
Otothyris lophophanes is an algae and biofilm grazer with a trophic level of approximately 2.5. The rasping mouth is adapted for scraping the fine aufwuchs community — algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated microorganisms — from the surfaces of rocks and wood in its hill-stream habitat. The cool, well-lit, fast-flowing streams of the Atlantic coast support rich periphyton growth on exposed rock surfaces.
In the aquarium, natural biofilm on mature surfaces is the most appropriate primary food source. This should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based tablets, and blanched vegetables of fine texture. The species is tiny and should not be housed with fish that monopolise sinking food before it can feed.
Mating
Courtship and mating in Otothyris lophophanes have not been documented. The species is not recorded as kept or observed in sufficient numbers to generate aquarium breeding accounts. By inference from other small hypoptopomatines, males likely engage in pursuit of gravid females; the diminutive size of the species means that a stable, mature, well-planted or well-rockscaped aquarium with soft, cool water would be the most conducive environment for conditioning.
No data on territorial behaviour, male-female interaction, or pre-spawning displays are available for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Otothyris lophophanes have been published or documented on specialist catfish resources. The species does not appear to have been maintained in aquaria in numbers sufficient for breeding observations.
Reproductive biology is entirely undocumented. Based on the general pattern of small hypoptopomatines, adhesive egg deposition on hard surfaces is plausible, but clutch size, incubation period, fry size, and parental care details are all unknown for this species.
In the aquarium
Otothyris lophophanes is essentially absent from the aquarium trade and is of interest mainly to specialist catfish researchers and enthusiasts studying the Hypoptopomatinae. PlanetCatfish records no spotters and no wishlist entries, reflecting its extreme rarity in hobby circles.
Its small size (under 1 in SL) and preference for cool, soft, slightly acidic water mean that a well-established hill-stream biotope aquarium — with rounded stones, fine-grained sandy substrate, moderate to strong current from a power head, and stable temperatures of 68–75 °F — would best meet its needs. Water hardness should be kept soft (10–15 dH) and pH in the 6.0–7.0 range. Warm or hard water is likely to compromise health.
Tankmates should be carefully selected to avoid competition: other small, gentle hill-stream species from southeastern Brazil or similarly soft-water environments are most appropriate. The species is far too small and retiring to compete successfully with typical community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otothyris lophophanes as Least Concern in November 2018. The species is restricted to the Atlantic coastal drainages of Rio de Janeiro State — an area that has experienced intense deforestation, urbanisation, agricultural conversion, and water extraction over the past two centuries.
The Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil is one of the world's most threatened and fragmented biomes, with less than 12% of original cover remaining. The coastal rivers of Rio de Janeiro have been subject to significant degradation, and the hill-stream habitat of endemic species such as O. lophophanes is vulnerable to riparian clearance, sediment loading, and alteration of flow regimes. While the Least Concern assessment reflects the current state of population data, the restricted endemism and threatened habitat of this species warrant ongoing monitoring.
