Taxonomy & naming
Otothyris travassosi was described by Garavello, Britski, and Schaefer in 1998 in American Museum Novitates (no. 3222, pages 1–19), which also provided a systematic revision of the entire genus Otothyris Myers, 1927. The paper recognised four species within Otothyris — O. juquiae, O. lophophanes, O. rostrata, and O. travassosi — and is still the definitive monographic treatment of the genus. The type locality for O. travassosi is the Barra Sêca River at the Linhares–São Mateus Road, Espírito Santo State, Brazil.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid, with the authority listed without parentheses because all three authors described the species in a new genus in 1998 (not a transfer from a previous genus combination). FishBase and PlanetCatfish place the genus in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, consistent with the original 1998 treatment, which used the title 'Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae' in its title and placed Otothyris close to Otocinclus and related genera.
Some secondary sources (including the Welsfans L-number database) use the subfamily name Otothyrinae — a name that has been applied to a clade within or sister to Hypoptopomatinae in certain phylogenetic treatments — but as of the current Catalog of Fishes standard, Hypoptopomatinae is the accepted placement and is used here. The specific epithet travassosi honours Dr Haroldo Pereira Travassos (1922–1977), ichthyologist and zoologist at the National Museum of Brazil, who served at the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro from 1942 until his death and became Titular Professor of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1969.
Morphology
Otothyris travassosi is one of the smallest loricariids: maximum recorded standard length is 1.5 in. The body is elongated, covered in overlapping bony scutes, and broad enough ventrally for the fish to adhere firmly to flat or slightly curved surfaces. The head is moderately wide and the snout rounded.
Diagnostic characters for the species, as given in Garavello et al. (1998), include: 16–21 premaxillary teeth and 13–18 dentary teeth on each side; 2 or more series of ventrally oriented odontodes on the anteroventral rostral margin; supraoccipital odontode crests short and low; a relatively small orbital diameter (less than the infraorbital depth); and the abdomen bearing 2–3 paired lateral plates. A pair of preanal platelets preceded by 2 or more additional platelets is characteristic, with small naked areas between platelets. The branched caudal-fin rays are banded, and there is a large brown blotch on the median caudal-fin rays together with two dark brown oblique bars on the fin — features that distinguish O. travassosi from its congeners.
Dorsal fin rays: I,7 (one spine, seven branched rays). Anal fin rays: I,5. The overall body shape is described as elongated. Coloration in life has not been extensively documented; based on field photographs available in the literature, the body is brownish with variable fine stripes or patterning — the basis for the common name 'Fine Striped Oto'.
Habitat
Otothyris travassosi is known from coastal rivers of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. The type locality — the Barra Sêca River (a coastal drainage in Espírito Santo State flowing through the Linhares region) — and published distribution records (PlanetCatfish) indicate the species is confined to Espírito Santo State drainages. Aquarium Glaser (2013) notes that specimens have been sourced from both Espírito Santo and Bahia states, suggesting the range may extend further north along the Atlantic coast than the type locality implies.
The river systems inhabited by O. travassosi are typically short, clear-water coastal streams draining from low-gradient terrain within what remains of the Atlantic Forest. Water is expected to be soft to moderately hard, with pH near neutral to slightly acidic, and ambient temperature in the tropical to subtropical range given the latitude (approximately 18–19°S for the Linhares region).
All Otothyris species are associated with shallow, fast-flowing water with strong surface agitation and high dissolved oxygen. The genus name reflects this habitat association — the combination of ous/otos (ear) and thyra/thyris (a small door or opening) may refer to the relatively large tympanic region of the genus or to structural features visible in the head anatomy, as interpreted by the original describer Myers (1927). The 'Fine Striped Oto' appellation and the Aquarium Glaser report of a maximum total length around 1 in confirm this is a true microhabitat specialist.
Feeding
Otothyris travassosi is presumed to be a periphyton grazer — feeding on the algae, diatoms, and microbial biofilm coating hard substrates in the shallow coastal streams it inhabits — consistent with the dietary ecology of virtually all Hypoptopomatinae for which feeding data exist. The genus is closely aligned phylogenetically with Otocinclus and relatives, which are among the best-known periphyton grazers in Loricariidae.
No stomach-content or observational feeding study specific to O. travassosi has been published. In the related genus Otocinclus, diatoms dominate the diet in many stream studies, with filamentous green algae and biofilm detritus forming secondary components. The multi-cusp teeth described in the Garavello et al. (1998) diagnosis are consistent with scraping rather than biting, confirming a hard-substrate grazing feeding mode.
In captivity, O. travassosi should be treated similarly to Otocinclus: offer an aquarium with well-established algae on glass and hardscape, supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based tabs, and blanched vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, spinach). The very small adult size means competition with larger grazers should be avoided; the fish needs unobstructed access to soft algae films. It is notably tiny — even Otocinclus affinis can be a dominating food competitor relative to this species.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Otothyris travassosi has not been documented. Neither the Garavello et al. (1998) monograph nor any subsequent publication describes courtship or reproductive behaviour in this species, and PlanetCatfish notes that breeding is unreported in the aquarium.
Within the Hypoptopomatinae, the majority of species studied breed via a T-spawning (or near-T) system in which the male positions himself perpendicular to the female, sperm is released, and the female individually places adhesive eggs on a flat, hard surface — behaviour documented most extensively in Otocinclus. Whether O. travassosi follows this pattern is plausible but unconfirmed.
For any hobbyist attempting to breed this species, water conditioning would likely need to mirror the seasonal dynamics of the Atlantic Forest coastal rivers: a period of richer feeding, warming (or stable warmth), and good flow followed by a modest water change with slightly cooler water to simulate the onset of the rainy season, which often triggers spawning in related genera. The fish's cryptobiotic tendencies (typical of the Hypoptopomatinae as a group) suggest that sheltered spawning spots among vegetation or against vertical surfaces may be preferred.
Breeding
Otothyris travassosi has not been bred in captivity as of mid-2026. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports, and Aquarium Glaser characterises the species as rarely imported, indicating it has barely entered the hobby at all. No registered keepers are listed on PlanetCatfish.
The Aquarium Glaser report (published online) noted that imported specimens adapted well to captive conditions and fed on algae, suggesting the fish is not particularly delicate once established — a positive indicator for future breeding attempts. The maximum total length of approximately 1 in noted in that source (consistent with FishBase's 1.5 in SL) means even a modest aquarium of 10–15 US gal with established algae and gentle to moderate flow could support a small group.
Breeding Otothyris travassosi would represent a genuine first in the hobby and a contribution to knowledge of Hypoptopomatinae reproductive biology. Recommended starting conditions: soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0, total hardness under 10°dH), temperature 75–81 °F, ample algae surfaces, and a group of at least four to six individuals to encourage spawning activity. Documenting the spawning sequence with photography would be valuable given the complete absence of captive reproductive data.
In the aquarium
Otothyris travassosi is a genuine rarity in the hobby. Aquarium Glaser reported imports in the early 2010s from Bahia and Espírito Santo, describing it as one of the smallest loricariid species available and noting that at barely 1 in total length it belongs to the smallest armoured catfishes in existence. Since those reports the species has rarely if ever appeared in trade.
For a keeper who acquires this fish, the practical requirements are those of a miniature rheophilic Hypoptopomatinae: well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, established algae on smooth rock and glass surfaces, soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 72–82 °F), and peaceful tankmates. A nano-tank of 5.5–10 US gal is adequate for a group of four to six individuals, provided filtration is matched to the bioload and algae are managed to ensure constant grazing surfaces.
Because of its very small size, O. travassosi should not be kept with any fish large enough to swallow it, nor with boisterous species that compete aggressively at feeding time. Miniature tetras, dwarf rasboras, small killifish, and other diminutive Hypoptopomatinae (such as Otocinclus) are suitable companions. The species is almost certainly nocturnal or crepuscular in activity, consistent with Hypoptopomatinae generally.
The fine striped patterning, miniature size, and Atlantic Forest provenance make O. travassosi appealing for biotope aquaria focused on southeastern Brazilian coastal rivers, where it could share a display with Schizolecis guentheri, small characins such as Hemigrammus or Moenkhausia species, and other Atlantic Forest endemics. Documentation of husbandry observations and any spawning behaviour would be a valuable contribution to the sparse published record for this species.
Conservation
Otothyris travassosi was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern on 7 November 2018 — a status indicating the species does not currently meet the criteria for threatened categories. The assessment is based on a sufficiently broad distribution across Atlantic Forest drainages and an absence of documented major population decline at the time of assessment.
Nevertheless, the Atlantic Forest biome is one of the world's most severely deforested and fragmented ecosystems, and the small coastal river systems of Espírito Santo and Bahia states — the heart of this species' range — face ongoing pressures from urbanisation, Eucalyptus plantation monoculture, sugar-cane agriculture, and water abstraction. The Linhares region of Espírito Santo is also the site of significant petroleum industry infrastructure (Petrobras), adding an industrial-spill risk layer to the riverine environment.
The Least Concern assessment should not mask the species' vulnerability to localised habitat degradation. All four Otothyris species are confined to the Atlantic Forest coastal drainage, and none has a large geographic range. Monitoring of population status, particularly in the drainages from which the species is known — the Barra Sêca and associated Espírito Santo coastal rivers — would provide an early warning of any decline linked to the continued attrition of the Atlantic Forest watershed.
