Taxonomy & naming
Otothyris rostrata was described by Garavello, Britski and Schaefer in 1998, alongside its congeners in the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the radiation of dwarf suckermouth catfishes within Loricariidae. The genus Otothyris comprises a small number of diminutive, broad-headed loricariids of the eastern and southern Brazilian coastal drainages.
The epithet rostrata derives from the Latin rostrum, 'beak', referring to the species' relatively elongate, beaked snout — a feature distinguishing it from the shorter-snouted members of the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. The species is closely related to the Critically Endangered O. juquiae of the Ribeira de Iguape basin to the north.
Morphology
Otothyris rostrata is a very small loricariid, reaching about 1 in standard length. The body bears the overlapping bony plates characteristic of the family, and the head is broad and depressed with a ventral suckermouth. The species is named for its comparatively elongate, beak-like snout, the most readily cited diagnostic feature relative to its congeners.
Detailed colour and meristic data beyond the original description are limited in the secondary literature, and no data on sexual dimorphism in this species has been published.
Habitat
Otothyris rostrata occurs in the Atlantic coastal drainages of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal species; unlike the tropical O. juquiae, its range extends into temperate latitudes, so it experiences cooler and more seasonally variable stream conditions than most loricariids.
As a dwarf suckermouth catfish it is associated with the bottom and with submerged surfaces — rocks, wood and aquatic vegetation — where it clings and grazes. Specific published water-chemistry data for its localities is limited.
Feeding
No detailed feeding study has been published for Otothyris rostrata. As with other Hypoptopomatinae, it is presumed to graze periphyton — the algal and microbial aufwuchs film coating submerged surfaces — using its ventral suckermouth. Specific dietary data for this species is not available.

Its temperate origin suggests it would not require the warm conditions typical of tropical loricariids, but this is inference rather than documented husbandry.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Otothyris rostrata as Least Concern in 2020. The classification reflects a comparatively broad distribution across the Atlantic coastal drainages of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with no evidence of significant range-wide decline. This stands in marked contrast to its Critically Endangered congener O. juquiae, whose far narrower range in the heavily impacted Ribeira de Iguape basin places it at high extinction risk.
While O. rostrata is not currently considered threatened, the coastal streams of southern Brazil face ongoing pressures from urbanisation, agriculture and pollution, and continued monitoring of water quality across its range remains prudent.
