Taxonomy & naming
Panaqolus nocturnus was described by Scott A. Schaefer and Donald J. Stewart in 1993 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (vol. 4, no. 4, p. 330, fig. 15) — the same paper in which the clown pleco P. maccus was simultaneously described. The type locality is Río Santiago near La Poza, Río Marañón basin, at approximately 4°01'24"S, 77°45'06"W, Departamento Amazonas, Peru — a site in the upper reaches of the Santiago River, a major tributary of the Marañón draining eastern Ecuador and northern Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Panaqolus nocturnus (Schaefer & Stewart, 1993); the earlier combination Panaque nocturnus is treated as a synonym.
The genus Panaqolus was erected to accommodate small, dwarf wood-eating loricariids related to the larger genus Panaque but significantly smaller in adult size. The name is derived from the indigenous Venezuelan term Panaque applied to the large genus, with a suffix intended to convey smaller stature. Panaqolus nocturnus was entered in the DATZ L-number system as L329 after hobbyist imports from Ecuador and Peru brought it to German and European aquarists in the 1990s. PlanetCatfish confirms L329 as the valid registration number. The species sits within subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini, per Armbruster (2004).
Morphology
Panaqolus nocturnus is a small, compact loricariid reaching a maximum standard length of 5.5 in SL (FishBase; Schaefer & Stewart, 1993), with PlanetCatfish listing the same figure as 5.5 in SL. Total length in large adults is approximately 6.5–7 in. The body is covered in the typical overlapping bony scutes of the family, with odontodes on the scutes providing the characteristic rough texture when the fish is handled. The overall profile is typical of Panaqolus: moderately flattened ventrally, with an arched dorsal surface, and a broad, rounded head.
The most immediately distinctive feature of this species relative to other Panaqolus is its coloration: the body is uniformly dark brown to near-black, virtually unpatterned in adults — a stark contrast to the vivid vermiculations and rings of P. maccus, or the spots of P. albivermis. Juveniles may show faint, barely visible pattern traces that disappear entirely as the fish matures. This cryptic, non-disruptive coloration presumably serves camouflage in the heavily shaded wood tangles the species inhabits.
Sexual dimorphism follows the Panaqolus genus pattern. Breeding males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and prominent odontodes along the dorsum. Genital papilla shape differentiates the sexes: males have a small, pointed papilla; females in breeding condition develop a large, rounded, swollen papilla. Gravid females are noticeably broader between the pectoral and pelvic fins when viewed from above.
Habitat
FishBase records the distribution as the Santiago and Pastaza river basins within the upper Napo drainage, in northern Peru and eastern Ecuador. PlanetCatfish gives a more detailed distribution: upper Amazon, Marañón, upper Marañón, and Santiago drainages, consistent with the type locality in the upper Santiago. The Pastaza system drains from the Ecuadorian Andes and joins the Marañón in Peru, placing this species in a zone of Andean foothill rivers transitioning to lowland whitewater systems.
The Santiago River at the type locality (approximately 4°S, 77°45'W) is a moderately fast-flowing, relatively clear Andean foothill river — cooler, less turbid, and somewhat more acidic than the broad lowland Marañón itself. Waters in these foothill systems are typically soft to moderately hard, near neutral to slightly acidic, with temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F at lower elevations. The 'nocturnus' epithet reflects the species' microhabitat preference: submerged wood accumulations, log tangles, and root systems in areas of reduced light penetration — dark, shaded refugia where the fish's uniformly dusky coloration provides excellent camouflage against predators. As in other Panaqolus, the microhabitat is strongly associated with submerged wood, which constitutes the primary food source.
Feeding
Panaqolus nocturnus is a xylophage — a wood-eater — in the same mould as all Panaqolus species. The fine, multi-cusped (spatulate) teeth characteristic of the genus are used to rasp wood surfaces, ingesting cellulose-rich wood fibres along with the biofilm (fungi, bacteria, algae, and microbial communities) that colonises submerged wood. The actual nutritive value derived from the wood cellulose itself is limited; the fish relies substantially on fermentative gut bacteria to break down hemicellulose fractions, and the biofilm community may be the primary nutritional source in practice.
PlanetCatfish's husbandry guidance is explicit: this genus requires several pieces of driftwood — preferably multiple species — as a non-negotiable element of captive care. Alongside wood, a primarily vegetarian diet is recommended, with prepared algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and fresh vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), sweet potato, potato, and peas all appropriate. The species is not a dedicated meaty-food feeder; heavy protein supplementation is likely counter-productive and may create digestive or organ problems over time. Occasional invertebrate foods can be offered for dietary variety.
Mating
Courtship in P. nocturnus has not been specifically documented in the scientific literature or in detailed hobbyist accounts, but the pattern can be inferred from the Panaqolus genus template, which is well described from both P. maccus and hobbyist experience with the group. Males become territorial around preferred wood cavities or crevice sites as they approach breeding condition. Interopercular odontode development is the most visible male-specific breeding signal; males in peak condition display noticeably enlarged cheek bristles and prominent dorsal odontodes.
A conditioned female in breeding condition is wider-bodied and carries a large, rounded, swollen papilla easily distinguishable from the small pointed papilla of the male. Females may be less obviously territorial than males but will defend roosting positions. In a sufficiently large tank with multiple wood structures and cavities, a male and one or more females can coexist without chronic conflict. Two males in a confined space risk persistent low-level aggression and odontode abrasion, but rarely fatal injury if hiding places are adequate.
Breeding
Panaqolus nocturnus is a cave-spawner. PlanetCatfish records the breeding mode as: 'A cave breeder, the male looks after the eggs and fry until the fry are ready to fend for themselves as miniature copies of the adults.' No captive breeding report has been registered on PlanetCatfish for this species, making it rarer in captive breeding terms than its more popular congener P. maccus.
The general Panaqolus breeding pattern — inferred from P. maccus and aligned with the PlanetCatfish description — involves the male selecting and occupying a narrow cavity within driftwood or a tube-like structure. After the female deposits her clutch of adhesive eggs on the interior walls, the male guards the eggs, fanning them continuously to maintain oxygenation and removing any fungused eggs. Incubation at typical tropical temperatures (75–81 °F) takes approximately 5–7 days. Fry emerge as miniature adults, already capable of rasping biofilm and soft plant matter within days. The male continues guarding until the fry disperse.
To encourage spawning in captivity, conditioning the pair on a diverse diet, maintaining good water quality with weekly water changes, and providing a gradual temperature reduction followed by warming (mimicking seasonal cues) are the standard approaches used successfully with other Panaqolus.
In the aquarium
At a maximum of roughly 5.5 in SL — total length around 6.5–7 in — P. nocturnus is among the more compact of the wood-eating loricariids, making it accessible for aquaria that could not accommodate Panaque species or large Pterygoplichthys. A single adult is manageable in a well-decorated 80-litre tank; a small group of three is comfortable in 40–55 US gal, provided multiple wood structures and caves ensure that individuals can each hold a territory.
PlanetCatfish's husbandry note is concise and accurate: 'Rock piles are optional and wood tangles are a must. Plants are not vital and will be nibbled or destroyed.' Driftwood is the central furnishing requirement — multiple pieces of at least two or three wood types (mopani, Malaysian, cholla, or bogwood) are preferable to a single large piece. The species will actively rasp all exposed wood surfaces. Plants in direct contact with the fish's territory will be nibbled or uprooted; attached species (Anubias, Java fern) on wood or stone above the substrate are usually safer.
Water parameters should target soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions reflecting the Andean foothill origin: temperature 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5. The species is reportedly compatible with most peaceful community fish. Some intraspecific territorial behaviour is expected, but given adequate wood territory, a group can be maintained without chronic injury. PlanetCatfish notes roughly 30 × 12 in of floor territory per fish as a guideline. Avoid keeping with aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Panaqolus nocturnus as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting a distribution across multiple river systems in the upper Amazon basin of Peru and Ecuador and no evidence of decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. The species is not a major commercial export item from either country.
The upper Marañón and Santiago drainages of northern Peru include some areas of active deforestation, agricultural expansion, and — at higher elevations — artisanal gold mining, all of which degrade riparian and in-river habitat. The dependence of P. nocturnus on submerged wood accumulations means any reduction in riparian forest cover — which reduces the rate of wood input to river channels — is a specific, indirect threat. Ecuador's eastern foothills (the Pastaza drainage) face similar pressure from colonisation and oil industry activity.
The species is not currently threatened, but the narrow geographic focus of its distribution in these transitional Andean foothill systems makes it somewhat more range-restricted than more widely distributed Amazonian loricariids. Continued monitoring of habitat condition in the Santiago and Pastaza drainages is warranted.
