Taxonomy & naming
Panaqolus gnomus was originally described by Schaefer and Stewart in 1993 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 4, number 4, page 333, fig. 17), from material collected at the Río Cushuimi near the community of Cushuimi — approximately 2°39'S, 77°43'W — in the upper Río Morona–Marañón drainage of Ecuador, at an elevation above 300 metres. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 62022) recognises the valid combination Panaqolus gnomus (Schaefer & Stewart, 1993), with the earlier combination Panaque gnomus treated as a synonym following the generic revision that erected Panaqolus for the smaller wood-eating loricariids. No L-number has been assigned to this species.
The genus Panaqolus is derived inelegantly from the indigenous Venezuelan name Panaque — applied to the larger genus of wood-eating loricariids — with a suffix implying diminutive stature. The specific epithet gnomus is Latin for gnome or earth-dweller, a fitting reference to the diminutive size and secretive, wood-hugging habits of this fish. Panaqolus sits within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, closely related to the larger Panaque clade (Armbruster, 2004), with both genera defined by spatulate or multi-cusped teeth adapted for rasping wood and woody biofilm.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of approximately 3 in (3 in) standard length (SL), making P. gnomus one of the smallest xylivorous loricariids known. The body is covered in the overlapping bony scute armour characteristic of the family, and the mouth is positioned ventrally as a sucking disc with multi-cusped teeth suited to rasping degraded wood surfaces and biofilm. No detailed published colour description is available for this species beyond general Panaqolus body patterning, which in related species typically involves dark brown to near-black ground colour with paler banding or spotting.
Sexual dimorphism follows the general Panaqolus pattern. During the breeding season, males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and additional odontodes along the dorsum. The genital papilla provides a reliable secondary indicator: the male's papilla is small and pointed, whereas a ripe female has a large, rounded, swollen papilla. Gravid females are noticeably wider between the pectoral and pelvic fin bases when viewed from above — a useful sexing character even outside of breeding condition.
Habitat
Panaqolus gnomus is known from the Pastaza and upper Marañón river basins, straddling the Ecuador–Peru border region — Andean foothill drainages that descend from the eastern slopes of the Andes into the upper Amazon system. The type locality on the Río Cushuimi places it in Andean piedmont water above 984 ft elevation, where rivers are typically clear to lightly turbid, well-oxygenated, and subject to strong seasonal variation in flow and temperature.
No water chemistry parameters are recorded in the published literature specifically for this species. By analogy with related Panaqolus from adjacent Amazonian drainages, the likely range encompasses warm tropical conditions typical of the upper Amazon basin. Microhabitat is presumed to involve submerged wood accumulations — root tangles, sunken logs, and driftwood piles in areas of moderate current — consistent with the dietary requirements of all Panaqolus.
Feeding
Panaqolus gnomus is a wood-feeder — a xylivore — and this is the defining element of its husbandry. The fish uses its multi-cusped teeth to rasp cellulose-rich wood, ingesting wood fibres along with the biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and fine organic matter that colonises submerged wood surfaces. Like other Panaqolus, the nutritional contribution of wood itself is modest; the associated microbial community and fermentative gut processes are likely central to meeting energy and nutrient requirements.
In the aquarium, several pieces of quality driftwood must always be available — not as optional furnishing but as a dietary staple. Mopani, Malaysian driftwood, and similar dense hardwoods are all suitable. Supplementary foods should be predominantly plant-based: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and root vegetables such as sweet potato, yam, and potato are all accepted. Occasional offerings of live or frozen invertebrate food can supplement the diet but should not form the bulk of it, as high-protein diets are not consistent with the natural feeding ecology of wood-eating loricariids.
Mating
Courtship in Panaqolus gnomus has not been documented in detail but is expected to follow the general pattern seen in related species. Males become territorial around preferred cave sites — sections of hollow driftwood, ceramic tubes, or tight crevices — displaying and defending these against rival males. The development of elongated interopercular odontodes in breeding males serves both as a display and a competitive weapon in male–male interactions. A ripe female, identifiable by her wider profile and swollen papilla, is coaxed or escorted into the male's chosen cavity.
Males may maintain territories with multiple females in a sufficiently spacious aquarium, but housing two males together in a small enclosure risks persistent conflict. Each individual requires roughly 30 × 12 in of floor territory.
Breeding
Panaqolus gnomus is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the reproductive strategy of the genus. No confirmed breeding reports have been filed on PlanetCatfish as of the time of writing, and only two registered keepers are recorded there — reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby rather than any fundamental difficulty of breeding. In related Panaqolus species, the male selects and cleans a tight cave or hollow wood section, spawns with a conditioned female, and then guards the egg clutch, fanning continuously to maintain oxygen flow and removing infertile eggs.
Fry emerge as miniature adults and begin rasping available wood surfaces almost immediately. Conditioning adults on a varied diet rich in wood and plant matter, combined with regular water changes and modest temperature fluctuation to simulate seasonal cues, is the approach that has triggered spawning in closely related species. Documenting this species in captivity would be a meaningful contribution to the hobby literature.
In the aquarium
The dwarf panaque's small adult size — under 3 in SL — places it among the most manageable loricariids available, but its wood-eating requirements mean it is not a fish that can be kept in a minimally furnished tank. Driftwood is non-negotiable: without it the fish will be stressed, may rasp at silicone seams, and is likely to decline over time. Multiple pieces of differing wood types are preferable, giving the fish both dietary variety and cover.
Tank size should reflect the species' territorial nature: a minimum of approximately 15–20 US gal is advisable for a single individual or a pair, with additional space and wood territory required for each additional fish. PlanetCatfish guidance suggests at least 30 × 12 in of floor space per individual. The species can be territorial toward conspecifics but is generally peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates. Compatible species include small peaceful mid-water fish — tetras, rasboras, small livebearers, and Corydoras — that do not compete for bottom space or wood resources.
Water quality must be high. Wood-eating loricariids produce significant organic waste, and high nitrate accumulation is stressful; regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are advisable. No specific water chemistry parameters have been published for this species, but conditions appropriate to an upper Amazonian origin — temperature in the low-to-mid tropical range, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral — are a reasonable starting point.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Panaqolus gnomus as Least Concern in April 2014, indicating no immediate threat at the species level at the time of assessment. The species occupies the Pastaza and upper Marañón basins in Ecuador and Peru — Andean foothill systems that, while subject to increasing agricultural and extractive pressure, retain substantial intact habitat in many reaches.
The broader upper Amazon and Andean foothill region faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and oil extraction, which can degrade stream quality and alter the wood dynamics on which Panaqolus species depend. Captive breeding in the hobby is theoretically achievable but not yet documented for this species. Its rarity in the trade means the hobby's demand pressure on wild populations is currently minimal.
