Taxonomy & naming
Panaqolus dentex was first described by Albert Günther in 1868, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 4, volume 1, number 6, article 56, page 477), under the name Chaetostoma dentex. The species passed through several generic assignments — recorded also as Chaetostomus dentex and Panaque dentex — before arriving at the current valid combination Panaqolus dentex, which is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The new combination in Panaqolus was established by Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1889), and the species was later redescribed with updated distribution data and phylogenetic context by Schaefer and Stewart (1993, Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 4(4): 321, figure 9). The comprehensive Loricariidae checklist of Ferraris (2007, Zootaxa 1418: 1–628) treats the current combination as valid.
No L-number or LDA code has been assigned. The type locality is recorded as Xeberos (also spelled Jeberos), in the upper Río Aipena system, a tributary to the Río Huallaga, at approximately 5°18'S, 76°17'W, Department of Loreto, Peru. Panaqolus belongs within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, and shares with Panaque the spatulate teeth adapted for wood-rasping.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL), placing P. dentex among the smaller members of Panaqolus. The loricariid body plan is fully expressed: a flattened, streamlined form armoured with interlocking bony scutes, a ventrally positioned suctorial mouth, and robust paired fins that anchor the fish against current and substrate. The precise adult coloration of wild-caught P. dentex is not well documented in the hobby literature; no detailed colour description is available from the sources consulted.
The teeth are the diagnostic feature of the genus — narrow and multi-cusped rather than the wide, deeply spoon-shaped teeth of the larger Panaque species. This morphology suits rasping biofilm and softer wood surfaces rather than excavating intact hardwood.
Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-wide pattern. Males in breeding condition develop elongated interopercular odontodes and additional dorsal odontodes. The male genital papilla is small and pointed; the female's is large, rounded, and swollen when ripe. Gravid females appear noticeably broader between the pectoral and pelvic fin bases when viewed from above.
Habitat
Panaqolus dentex is recorded from the upper Amazon headwaters — the Napo, Marañón, and Pastaza drainages, spanning Ecuador and Peru. The type locality (Jeberos, upper Huallaga tributary) places the original specimens in Peruvian lowland Amazonia, while the broader distribution extends into Ecuadorian Andean foothill rivers.
These are tropical freshwater systems in the benthopelagic zone — the fish lives at or close to the bottom, associated with submerged wood and root structure. Specific temperature and pH data are not available in the sources consulted for this species. Based on its sympatric relatives and the general character of upper Amazon Andean-foothill rivers, the water is likely warm, soft to moderately soft, and slightly acidic to neutral — but these parameters are inferred from geography rather than field measurement and should be treated with corresponding uncertainty.
Feeding
Panaqolus dentex is a xylivore — a wood-eater — as are all members of the genus. Driftwood is a dietary requirement rather than optional furniture. The fish rasps the surface of submerged wood with its narrow multi-cusped teeth, consuming wood fibres together with the biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and organic detritus that colonises waterlogged timber. Gut fermentation by associated microbes appears to assist in extracting nutrition from otherwise indigestible cellulose fractions.
In captivity, multiple pieces of driftwood must be provided and kept accessible at all times. Supplementary foods should be primarily vegetable-based: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette, sweet potato, and similar matter are appropriate. Without continuous wood access, obligate wood-eaters experience physiological stress; wood is both a food source and a functional part of their digestive system.
Mating
No species-specific observations of P. dentex courtship are available from the sources consulted. The standard Panaqolus protocol — provision of multiple wood-based cave sites, conditioning on varied vegetable foods and algae wafers, clean well-oxygenated water, and minor seasonal temperature variation — represents the best available starting point for anyone attempting to breed this species. Documenting a successful spawning would constitute a meaningful contribution to the hobby record for this little-studied taxon.
In the aquarium
Panaqolus dentex is rarely available in the trade and has a minimal hobby record — only three field sightings are registered on PlanetCatfish as of the data consulted. Specific husbandry parameters have not been established for this species.
By genus analogy, the core requirements are consistent with other dwarf Panaqolus: a well-filtered aquarium with multiple pieces of driftwood continuously available, a temperature appropriate for upper Amazonian species (likely 75–84 °F), slightly acidic to neutral pH, and a vegetable-heavy supplementary diet. Wood must never be absent from the tank. A 60–80-litre minimum is appropriate for a single specimen; more space with additional wood territory is preferable if a pair is kept.
Given its obscurity in the hobby, P. dentex is not a species a hobbyist is likely to encounter at retail. It may occasionally appear in specialist imports of Peruvian or Ecuadorian loricariids. Anyone acquiring specimens should document water parameters, behaviour, and any breeding attempts carefully, as the published record for this species is thin.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Panaqolus dentex as Least Concern in April 2014. The assessment notes a wide distribution across the Napo, Pastaza, and Marañón basins within Ecuador and Peru, with no major known threats identified at the time.
The upper Amazon and its Andean foothill tributaries face ongoing anthropogenic pressure — deforestation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric projects that alter river geomorphology and reduce submerged wood volumes. These trends are relevant to xylivorous loricariids that depend on wood-rich microhabitats. The species' current Least Concern standing reflects the breadth of its distribution rather than any demonstrated population robustness; population trend data are not available.
