One of the oldest-described Panaqolus species yet among the least familiar in the hobby, the Purus pleco was named from a single specimen collected in 1935 from a remote tributary of the Río Purús. A long gap between original description and genuine understanding closed in 2014 when Cramer's redescription finally gave the species a proper morphological identity — a smallish, cryptically patterned wood-eater from the softwater flooded-forest rivers of the western Purus–Acre drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Panaqolus purusiensis was originally described by Francesca LaMonte in 1935 in American Museum Novitates (number 784, pages 1–8) under the combination Panaque purusiensis, from a single specimen collected near the mouth of the Rio Macauã (Macauhan), a tributary of the Rio Iaco (Yaco), itself a tributary of the Rio Purús, at approximately 9°20'S, 69°W, Brazil. The original description was minimal, based on a single type specimen, and the species remained poorly understood for nearly eight decades.

In 2014, Christian A. Cramer published a thorough redescription in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 12, pages 61–70) that established a detailed morphological diagnosis and an identification key to all Panaqolus species known at that time. Cramer's work also extended the known range to the Curanja River in Peru — also part of the Purus drainage — making this a transboundary species.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the valid combination as Panaqolus purusiensis (LaMonte, 1935), with Panaque purusiensis as the junior synonym reflecting the earlier generic placement. FishBase and PlanetCatfish both follow this treatment. No L-number has been assigned to this species; it has not entered the ornamental trade in any significant quantity and remains virtually unknown in the hobby.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 5 in SL (FishBase, referencing Cramer 2014), with PlanetCatfish listing a maximum of 4.5 in SL — the Cramer redescription figure of 5 in is the more authoritative. The body follows the standard Panaqolus plan: dorsoventrally depressed, fully armoured in bony scutes, with a broad, flat ventral surface and a ventral sucking disc formed by modified lower lip tissue.

The teeth of Panaqolus purusiensis are multi-cusped but narrower than the fully spatulate teeth of the larger Panaque, consistent with the general Panaqolus tooth form — adapted for rasping softer, degraded wood and biofilm rather than deep-boring hardwood excavation. Ground colour is reported as brown, overlaid with a variable pattern of pale spotting or vermiculations; juveniles may show more contrast than adults. Precise coloration details from preserved specimens in Cramer (2014) describe a combination of pale dorsal spots and irregular markings on a medium-brown background.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-wide pattern: breeding males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and odontodes along the dorsum, while females in breeding condition are noticeably broader-bodied between the pectoral and pelvic fins when viewed from above. Genital papilla shape differs: pointed in males, large and rounded in gravid females.

Habitat

The type locality and recorded range place P. purusiensis in the upper Purus River system: the Rio Macauã and Rio Iaco in the western Brazilian state of Acre, and the Rio Curanja in Ucayali region, Peru. The Purus is a major south-bank Amazon tributary rising in the Andean foothills of Peru and flowing northeast through the lowland Amazon basin; it is characterised by highly sinuous channels, extensive flooded-forest (várzea) during the flood season, and relatively soft, slightly acidic blackwater conditions.

The upper Purus and its tributaries lie in the Southwestern Amazon Moist Forests ecoregion — a region notable for high biodiversity and relatively intact forest cover but increasingly subject to deforestation and agricultural expansion. Water conditions in the Macauã and Iaco tributaries are typically very soft (low conductivity, below 50 µS/cm), pH weakly acidic (6.0–6.8), and warm (75–82 °F year-round), with seasonal water level fluctuations of several metres.

Microhabitat for the species can be inferred from genus ecology: submerged wood and woody debris in and along the river margins, particularly in areas sheltered from the strongest currents. The extensive flooded forests provide abundant submerged timber during high water.

Feeding

As a member of the genus Panaqolus, P. purusiensis is a wood-eater (xylophage), relying on driftwood as a dietary staple and not merely a structural element of its habitat. The multi-cusped teeth scrape wood surfaces, ingesting cellulose-rich fibres alongside the biofilm communities (bacteria, algae, fungi, and detritus) that colonise submerged wood. As in other Panaqolus and the related Panaque, hindgut fermentation by symbiotic gut bacteria enables partial digestion of plant polysaccharides.

In the aquarium, several pieces of driftwood — varied in hardness and species — should be available at all times and replenished as they are consumed. A primarily plant-based supplementary diet is appropriate: algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette (zucchini), sweet potato, cucumber, and peas are all suitable. Occasional protein supplementation (bloodworm, brine shrimp) may be offered but should not dominate. Overfeeding protein to wood-eating loricariids can cause digestive upset and fatty liver over time.

Compared to the larger Panaque species, the narrower teeth of Panaqolus suggest a preference for softer or more decayed wood and biofilm-rich surfaces rather than deep excavation of intact hardwood. Multiple soft-wood types alongside harder pieces give the fish options to select according to preference.

Mating

No aquarium breeding reports for P. purusiensis are documented in the PlanetCatfish database (as of mid-2026), and the species is effectively unknown in the hobby. Courtship behaviour can be inferred from the well-documented patterns of congeners such as P. maccus and P. albivermis.

Males in breeding condition develop conspicuous elongated interopercular odontodes and become territorial around preferred cave sites. In the Panaqolus breeding cycle, males select and defend a cavity — a section of hollow driftwood, a tight crevice, or a purpose-made breeding tube — and will repel rival males with lateral displays, fin-fanning, and direct physical contact using the pectoral spines. A receptive female, identifiable by her noticeably swollen abdomen and rounded papilla, is coaxed into the cavity for spawning. Water temperature, quality, and photoperiod cues linked to the Amazonian dry season (cooler, clearer water) appear to be important triggers for spawning attempts in related species.

Breeding

Panaqolus purusiensis has not been bred in captivity in any documented case. The species was essentially unknown to hobbyists prior to Cramer's 2014 redescription, and it has not entered commercial trade in meaningful quantities. All Panaqolus are cave spawners with paternal brood care, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ.

Based on the well-documented breeding of P. maccus and occasional reports for other Panaqolus species, the expected pattern would be: adhesive eggs deposited on the internal walls of a narrow cave selected and guarded by the male; continuous fanning of the clutch during an incubation period of approximately 5–7 days at 77–81 °F; fry emerging as miniature adults that begin rasping soft foods almost immediately; and paternal guarding through the early fry stage until independent dispersal.

Any keeper lucky enough to obtain specimens from specialist importers handling Purus basin material should treat this species as a taxonomically significant rarity and attempt captive reproduction using the standard Panaqolus protocol: excellent water quality, ample driftwood, temperature cycling, and paired housing in a tank with multiple cave options.

In the aquarium

Panaqolus purusiensis is, in practical terms, a species unavailable through normal hobby channels. No registered keepers are listed on PlanetCatfish as of mid-2026, and the species has not been commercially imported in any documented batch. It is encountered only when ornamental fish collectors work in the upper Purus or Rio Curanja — a remote area with limited trading infrastructure — and identify it correctly following Cramer's 2014 key.

Should the species become available, its husbandry requirements can be reliably derived from the congener P. maccus. Tank size: a minimum of 20 US gal for a single adult; 30–40 US gal for a small group with adequate wood territory. Water parameters should reflect the soft, acidic Purus origin: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, hardness below 8 dGH. Tannin-rich water from botanicals or natural driftwood is appropriate.

Driftwood is obligatory. Multiple pieces, varied in hardness and type, should fill significant floor area. Plants are not essential and will likely be disturbed. Tankmates should be peaceful, mid-water species compatible with soft-acidic Amazonian conditions: small tetras, pencilfish, and Corydoras from the same drainage are ecologically appropriate choices. The species should not be mixed with larger, more aggressive plecos that would outcompete it for wood resources and cave sites.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Panaqolus purusiensis as Least Concern in October 2020. The assessment reflects a range spanning parts of Brazil (Acre state) and Peru (Ucayali region) within the Purus drainage, without documented evidence of severe population decline. The species is not commercially exploited for the ornamental trade to any known degree.

However, the upper Purus basin — particularly the Brazilian state of Acre — has experienced rapid agricultural expansion (cattle ranching and soybean cultivation) over the past two decades, with associated deforestation, sedimentation, and reduction of riparian vegetation. The Rio Madeira–Rio Purús interfluvial region has among the highest deforestation rates in Amazonia during recent years. The loss of riparian forest reduces inputs of woody debris to rivers, directly affecting xylophagous species that depend on submerged wood for food and shelter.

In Peru, the Rio Curanja forms part of the territory of the Iskonawa indigenous people; the broader region faces pressure from illegal logging, gold mining, and coca cultivation. Given the species' dependence on intact flooded-forest habitat and submerged wood, sustained deforestation represents a structural threat that LC status does not fully capture at the landscape level.
