Panaqolus tankei is a wood-eating pleco from the rio Xingu of Brazil — the same biodiverse rapids system that gave the hobby the zebra pleco and dozens of other iconic L-numbers. Registered as L398, it carries the tiger-striped pattern typical of the genus, packs genuine xylivore biology that demands driftwood as a dietary staple, and has a small but growing captive-breeding history that makes responsible husbandry an achievable goal.

Taxonomy & naming

Panaqolus tankei was formally described by Cramer and Sousa in 2016, published in PLoS ONE (volume 11, number 11, e0165388). The type locality is recorded as Pará, rio Xingu, 11 mi south from Senador José Porfírio, main channel, Brazil (02°44'54.7"S, 52°00'09.5"W) — placing the species firmly in the lower Xingu system. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Panaqolus tankei as a valid species, authority Cramer & Sousa, 2016 (without parentheses).

The genus Panaqolus was established to accommodate the dwarf wood-eating relatives of the larger genus Panaque. The name derives from the Venezuelan indigenous term Panaque — the parent genus name — with a suffix implying smaller body size. Both genera share the defining character of the wood-eating loricariid lineage: spatulate (spoon-shaped) teeth adapted for rasping wood fibre rather than scraping biofilm from rock surfaces as in most other Loricariidae. Panaqolus species are typically smaller and slimmer than Panaque but retain the essential xylivore ecology.

In the ornamental hobby, this species is catalogued as L398, assigned by the DATZ (Deutsche Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift) registration system. It is also known by the vernacular name Tanke Tiger Pleco and, in Scandinavian markets, as 'Tigersugemalle'. Known distribution encompasses the lower Amazon, Xingu, and lower Xingu drainages.

Morphology

Adults of P. tankei reach approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) — a size typical for mid-sized Panaqolus, larger than the clown pleco (P. maccus, ~3.5 in SL) but compact relative to Panaque species. The body follows the loricariid pattern: depressed, fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral suckermouth, broad pectoral fins, and a stout caudal peduncle.

The colour pattern is the characteristic banded or 'tiger-striped' form shared by several Panaqolus species: alternating pale and dark transverse bands or worm-like markings across the flanks, fins, and head. The exact patterning varies somewhat between individuals and changes with age — juveniles typically show sharper, more contrastive markings, while adults may show broader, less sharply delineated bands.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced enough for reliable sexing in conditioned adults. Males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) during breeding condition and also bear odontodes along the dorsum. Genital papilla morphology provides the most reliable indicator: males have a small, pointed papilla, while females develop a large, rounded, swollen papilla. Gravid females are noticeably wider-bodied than males when viewed from above, particularly in the area between the pectoral and pelvic fin bases.

Habitat

The rio Xingu is one of the Amazon's most distinctive tributaries — a clearwater river rising on the Brazilian Shield and flowing north through Pará state to join the Amazon main stem near Altamira. Its lower reaches, where P. tankei is found, are characterised by extensive rock outcrops, rapids, and boulder fields sculpted by fast, well-oxygenated clearwater. The Xingu's water is notably clear and warm relative to the turbid whitewater Amazon main channel, with moderate to low conductivity and mildly acidic to near-neutral pH depending on the season and location.

Within this system, P. tankei — like other Xingu Panaqolus — is associated with wood accumulations: submerged logs, root masses, and driftwood tangles lodged among boulders and in calmer pools behind rapids. Driftwood is not only shelter but the primary food source for xylivore loricariids, and the association is therefore both ecological and nutritional. Current at collection sites is typically moderate to brisk, with high dissolved oxygen levels.

The known distribution extends across the lower Amazon, Xingu, and lower Xingu drainages, suggesting the species is not restricted to the most extreme upper-Xingu rapids but occupies a range of habitats within this clearwater system.

Feeding

Panaqolus tankei is a xylivore — a wood-feeder — and this biology is the most critical aspect of its husbandry. Like other members of Panaqolus and the related genus Panaque, it rasps wood using its spatulate, multi-cusped teeth, ingesting cellulose-rich wood fibre along with the biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and detritus that colonises submerged timber. The nutritional strategy depends heavily on gut microbial communities that ferment hemicellulose fractions, supplemented by algal and invertebrate material encountered during grazing.

In the aquarium, multiple pieces of driftwood of varied types must always be available — this is a non-negotiable requirement, not an optional enrichment item. Without adequate wood, P. tankei will show stress, may rasp at silicone seams, and will suffer digestive and immune compromise over time. Supplementary foods should strongly favour plant-based options: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), sweet potato, cucumber, and peas. Occasional protein supplements (bloodworm, brine shrimp) can be offered sparingly. Heavy protein feeding is not appropriate for a xylivore and may cause fatty liver over extended periods.

Mating

Courtship in Panaqolus tankei follows the general pattern documented for cave-spawning loricariids. Males establish and defend preferred cave structures — tight crevices in driftwood, rock tunnels, or manufactured ceramic tubes — and develop pronounced interopercular odontodes and dorsal odontodes during reproductive condition. Territorial behaviour between males is common in smaller enclosures; males display and may engage in brief physical contests for prime cave sites.

Male readiness is signalled by odontode development; female readiness by the swelling and rounding of the genital papilla and increasing body width when viewed from above. A conditioned pair can be maintained together if sufficient cave options and floor area are available — PlanetCatfish guidelines suggest approximately 30 × 12 in of floor area per individual as a minimum to reduce chronic territorial stress. Multiple females can be kept with a single male in a suitably sized tank.

Breeding

Panaqolus tankei is a cave spawner with paternal brood care, and has been bred in captivity with four confirmed breeding reports on record as of the PlanetCatfish database — a meaningful benchmark for a species described only in 2016. The male selects and defends a suitable enclosed cavity, and after spawning he remains with the clutch, fanning the adhesive eggs continuously with his fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.

Eggs are deposited on the interior walls of the cave, pale in colour, adhesive. The male fans the clutch through incubation — at typical tank temperatures (79–82 °F) roughly 5–7 days is a reasonable expectation based on analogous Panaqolus — and continues to guard the fry for some time after hatching until they can fend for themselves. Fry resemble miniature adults and begin grazing on wood and soft foods within days of emergence.

Successful conditioning requires a varied diet, high water quality, and setup conditions that include multiple wood pieces and enclosed cave structures. A slight seasonal temperature drop (36–37 °F) followed by a return to warmer water, combined with more frequent water changes, has been used to simulate the seasonal flood-pulse transitions of the Xingu and may help trigger spawning in reluctant adults.

In the aquarium

At approximately 4.5 in SL, Panaqolus tankei is a manageable pleco that fits comfortably into community setups of 25 US gal or more. Its wood-eating biology and territorial tendencies mean the aquarium must be designed around its needs: multiple pieces of driftwood are essential both as food and as territory markers, and each fish should have access to at least one enclosed cave structure (a tight fitting in the driftwood, a ceramic tube, or a snug rock crevice).

Water parameters should reflect the clearwater Xingu origin: temperature 79–86 °F (the Xingu runs warm), pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately soft water. Dissolved oxygen must be high — the Xingu rapids are well-oxygenated — so a powerhead, airstone, or spray-bar return that creates surface agitation is appropriate. The species is sensitive to poor water quality; ammonia and nitrite must be zero, and regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly) are standard.

Somewhat territorial toward conspecifics, P. tankei can be kept in groups if the tank is large enough and hiding spaces are generous. One fish per approximately 30 × 12 in of floor space is the PlanetCatfish-cited guideline. Plants in the aquarium may be nibbled — especially soft-leaved species — so robust Anubias or Java fern attached to wood are better choices than delicate foreground carpets.

Compatible community fish include peaceful mid-water South American species: small characins, hatchetfish, medium-sized tetras, and similarly sized Corydoras. Avoid housing with other large or territorial plecos in confined spaces. This species is not suited to a softwater planted tank where wood would be problematic or where algae-control is the primary role expected of a pleco — it is a wood-feeder first, and its tank should reflect that.

Conservation

Panaqolus tankei is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) on the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2016 and has not been included in a formal IUCN Loricariidae assessment since its description. A Not Evaluated status is not reassuring: it means no data have been assessed, not that the species is secure.

The rio Xingu has been subjected to one of the most consequential conservation battles in Amazonian history: the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Complex, constructed on the main Xingu channel near Altamira, altered the flow regime of the Volta Grande do Xingu — the 'Big Bend' stretch that is one of the world's most biodiverse stretches of freshwater, harbouring dozens of endemic Loricariidae and other fish families. The Volta Grande section is downstream of the main dam and experienced severe flow reduction, fundamentally changing the thermal, chemical, and physical habitat of fish communities adapted to the clearwater rapids.

Panaqolus tankei's type locality (11 mi south of Senador José Porfírio, main channel) falls within the broader Xingu system, and the full extent of Belo Monte's impact on this and related species is an active area of scientific monitoring. Any xylivore loricariid in the Xingu system is inherently at risk from flow alterations that reduce or remove submerged driftwood habitat — the physical and nutritional foundation of these species' ecology.

Captive breeding in the hobby, while at an early stage, is an encouraging development. Establishing a self-sustaining captive population reduces pressure on wild-caught imports and keeps the species in hobbyist awareness pending a formal IUCN assessment.
