With its marbled cloak of black and olive-green and a caudal fin ending in long white filaments, Panaque bathyphilus is an unmistakable species — and one built for the dark: collected from sunken wood and submerged timber at depths up to 18 metres in the main channels of the upper Amazon, it is the most depth-tolerant Panaque known and, at around 15.5 in standard length, the smallest member of the genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Panaque bathyphilus was formally described by Nathan Lujan and Cláudio Chamon in 2008 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 19, number 3, pp. 271–282), from a type specimen collected in the Solimões River upstream of its confluence with the Purus River (3°39′52″S, 61°28′53″W), Amazonas state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Panaque bathyphilus Lujan & Chamon, 2008, with no currently accepted synonyms.

The genus Panaque, erected by Miranda Ribeiro (1920), is distinguished from all other Loricariidae by its broad, spoon-shaped (spatulate) teeth — wider at the tip than at the base — and by the absence of a buccal papilla. Panaque bathyphilus sits within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004), sharing the wood-eating, strongly spatulate-toothed habit with congeners such as Panaque nigrolineatus and P. schaeferi.

The pre-description hobby code L090 was applied in Germany in the early 1990s, and the fish had already been circulating in the trade for years before the formal description appeared. Collectors in Peru export it under the name 'Pleco Papa Ojo Chico' (small-eyed father pleco), a name that captures both its imposing size and its disproportionately small eyes — a trait linked to life in deep, light-poor water.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 15.5 in standard length (SL), making P. bathyphilus the smallest species in its genus — a relative statement, since 15.5 in remains a large pleco. The body is powerfully built, broad-headed, and covered in the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of all Loricariidae. Ground colour in established aquarium specimens is a reticulated pattern of black or dark olive-grey with paler green or yellowish mottling — a disruptive camouflage well suited to wood-tangles in turbid Amazon channels.

The most distinctive feature is the caudal fin: both lobes are extended into long white filaments that persist throughout ontogeny, from juveniles of 2.5 in upward. No other Panaque species shares this character across all life stages, making it immediately identifiable. The eyes are conspicuously small relative to head size — a presumed adaptation to the low-light conditions of deep benthic habitats where vision is of limited value.

The teeth conform to the Panaque pattern: broad, spatulate, and capable of gouging intact wood. The mouth is positioned ventrally on the broad, slightly flattened head, with the oral disc capable of generating strong adhesion to rocky or woody surfaces against current.

Wild-caught specimens occasionally arrive at export facilities in a near-white or pale condition, a result of their sudden transition from deep, lightless water to surface conditions. This colouration fades within days, reverting to the normal marbled pattern. The holotype itself was described from such a bleached specimen, a detail that caused some early confusion about the fish's normal appearance.

Habitat

The type locality lies in the Solimões River (the Brazilian stretch of the upper Amazon), and the species is also established from the Ucayali, Marañón, and their Peruvian tributaries — a broad arc of the upper and middle Amazon drainage. Wild collections by hobbyist collectors in Peru document the fish at depths up to 18 metres in the main river channel, beneath submerged logs and fallen timber where current and fine sediment conspire to reduce visibility to near zero.

The Amazon's main channels are whitewater systems — turbid, warm, and moderately productive. The Solimões at the type locality runs at temperatures of approximately 79–86 °F year-round, with near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH and moderate conductivity reflecting Andean mineral input. Deep benthic zones of these channels experience reduced temperature variation and little direct sunlight, but remain well oxygenated by river flow.

Despite the deep-water habitat association, hobbyist collectors have also found P. bathyphilus in shallower situations — Erlend Bertelsen documented collecting juveniles from 2.5–8 in around a single fallen tree in the Ucayali at relatively modest depth, suggesting juveniles and smaller fish may occupy shallower wood-tangle microhabitats. Whether adults routinely occupy such depths or move deeper is unknown.

Feeding

Like all Panaque, P. bathyphilus is a confirmed xylophage. Its broad spatulate teeth are capable of gouging fibres from intact hardwood, and the gut is adapted for fermenting cellulose-rich material with the assistance of intestinal bacteria. In the wild, the fish scrapes biofilm, algae, and detritus from submerged wood surfaces in addition to ingesting wood fibres directly. Stomach content data for the species are sparse given the difficulty of collecting in deep benthic habitats, but the dentition and gut morphology leave little doubt about the dietary guild.

In the aquarium, driftwood is not optional furniture but a nutritional necessity: large, hard pieces of driftwood (mopani, Malaysian, ironwood) should always be available for rasping. Supplementary feeding should consist primarily of plant-based foods: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), sweet potato, and peas. Tubers (potato, yam) are accepted enthusiastically. Some green beans and cucumber can be rotated into the diet.

Animal protein should be minimal. Heavy protein diets produce excessive waste and may cause fatty organ degeneration over time. A modest supplement of sinking carnivore pellets or occasional thawed bloodworm is acceptable, but vegetables and wood must dominate.

Mating

Breeding of P. bathyphilus in captivity has not been documented in any published report to date, and no verified aquarium breeding account appears in the PlanetCatfish database. The species' large adult size — requiring substantial tanks — and the difficulty of conditioning such fish without commercial-scale facilities are the most likely barriers.

By inference from other large Panaque, courtship presumably involves males competing for and defending cavity sites, with the male developing enlarged interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) in breeding condition. Males of large Panaque are typically identifiable by a broader, more odontode-bearing snout margin and a slightly more slender body profile compared to gravid females. The large caudal filaments may play a role in intraspecific signalling, though no behavioural data exist for this species.

Conditioned pairs are likely to require a significant cave or hollow — a section of very large-diameter pipe, a hollow root system, or deep wood cavity — to initiate spawning. Whether the caudal filaments are retained or shortened in reproductive condition is unknown.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Panaque bathyphilus has been confirmed. The species presents several practical obstacles: adults reaching 15.5 in SL require tanks of 105 US gal or more for a single individual, and the provision of appropriately scaled, deep cave structures for spawning is challenging for most private keepers. The large volume of organic waste produced by an animal of this size also demands powerful, mature filtration.

In larger Panaque generally, spawning is understood to be cave-based, with paternal guarding of adhesive eggs deposited on the cave walls, but this has not been directly observed in P. bathyphilus. Given the deep-water origin of this species, it is plausible that some aspect of its reproductive biology (pressure change, photoperiod in dark habitats, seasonal water temperature or chemistry shifts in the Ucayali) may prove difficult to replicate in standard aquarium conditions.

The absence of any breeding report despite the species having been in the hobby since the early 1990s underscores the challenge. Until a reliable protocol is developed, the ornamental trade remains dependent on wild collection from Peru.

In the aquarium

Panaque bathyphilus is a fish for serious large-pleco keepers: the combination of substantial adult size (up to 15.5 in SL, with total length including filaments somewhat longer), prodigious wood-and-vegetable waste production, and a need for extensive wood decoration places it firmly outside the category of beginner fish. A single adult requires a minimum of 105 US gal, and preferably 130–160 US gal or more, with strong filtration — sump systems or multiple large external canister filters are advisable. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are essential to control nitrate accumulation.

The marbled body pattern and extraordinary caudal filaments make this one of the most visually striking plecos available, and the species has a devoted following among dedicated loricariid keepers. Water parameters should replicate the warm Amazonian main channel: temperature 77–86 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. The fish tolerates a range of water chemistry but does not tolerate poor water quality.

Multiple large hardwood pieces — ideally Malaysian driftwood, mopani, or similar dense types — must always be present. The fish will rasp actively and the wood will be visibly eroded over months. Courgette, sweet potato, and algae wafers should be supplied several times per week. Tankmates should be robust: large, peaceful mid- to top-water fish. Other Panaque of similar size may coexist if territory is generous, but smaller plecos may be outcompeted for feeding sites.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Panaque bathyphilus as Least Concern in October 2020, reflecting a broad distribution across the upper and middle Amazon drainage of Brazil and Peru and the absence of evidence of significant population decline. The species is collected in moderate numbers for the ornamental trade, primarily from Peruvian export operations in the Ucayali watershed. Its deep-water habitat offers some degree of natural protection from shoreline disturbance and artisanal fishing pressure.

The major conservation concern for the upper Amazon broadly — and by extension for deep-channel benthic species — is hydroelectric development. Several large dam projects have been proposed or are under various stages of planning in the Ucayali and Marañón drainage; alteration of river hydrology, sedimentation of deep channel habitats, and destruction of submerged wood accumulations could all affect a wood-dependent, deep-channel specialist. At present, however, P. bathyphilus has no legal protected status and remains trade-legal from Peru.
