Panaque titan lives up to its name: at nearly 15.5 in standard length it is among the largest members of a genus already known for impressive size, an obligate wood-eater whose spoon-shaped teeth can gouge actively into submerged hardwood rather than simply rasping its surface. Juveniles arrive in the trade with gold-edged fins that fade with age — a beauty that belies the scale of the tank and the volume of filtration this fish will eventually demand.

Taxonomy & naming

Panaque titan was described by Lujan, Hidalgo and Stewart in 2010 in Copeia (volume 2010, number 4, pages 676–704), as part of a revisionary paper covering the genus Panaque across its Amazonian range. The type locality is Apoalla Creek, a tributary of the lower Shushufindi River in the Napo drainage, Sucumbíos Province, Ecuador (0°17'S, 76°27'W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Panaque titan as a valid species.

The genus Panaque comprises the large, obligate wood-eating loricariids of South American river systems. It is placed within tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae, and is distinguished from the smaller Panaqolus by larger adult size, the absence of buccal papillae, and most conspicuously by the broad, spoon-shaped (spatulate) teeth that can excavate intact wood grain — a functional distinction with direct consequences for the fish's ecological role and its care in captivity.

The species epithet titan derives from the Titans of Greek mythology, emphasising the exceptional size of the fish relative to other members of the genus — it is, at maximum reported size, one of the largest Panaque species known. It carries the informal aquarium registration number L418 and is sold under the common names Shampupa Royal Pleco (referencing a Peruvian export locality) and Gold-trim Royal Pleco (referencing the gold-edged fin coloration of juveniles).

Morphology

Panaque titan reaches at least 15.5 in standard length (SL), making it a genuinely large catfish by any measure — one of the largest plecos practically maintained in the hobby. The body is heavily armoured in the typical loricariid manner, with robust, overlapping bony scutes across the flanks and an exceptionally broad, flat head.

The ground colour of adults is dark grey-brown to near-black, with a bold pattern of pale to gold-yellow streaks or reticulations on the fins and body. Juveniles are strikingly coloured: the dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins show vivid gold or cream margins that contrast sharply with the dark body — the 'gold-trim' pattern from which one common name derives. This marginal gold coloration tends to fade or become less sharply defined as the fish matures.

The most diagnostically significant feature is the teeth: the broad, spoon-shaped (spatulate) dentition of Panaque, visible even in living fish as wide, flat crowns when the mouth is open, distinguishes the genus immediately from the narrower multicusped teeth of Panaqolus. This tooth form enables active wood excavation rather than surface rasping. Buccal papillae are absent in Panaque, another point of difference from Panaqolus.

Sexual dimorphism is not strongly expressed; males and females are outwardly similar at most sizes. The pectoral fin odontodes of males may be more pronounced, and as with other loricariids, breeding condition can be inferred partly from body depth when viewed from above.

Habitat

Panaque titan is known from the upper Amazon basin: the Napo and Putumayo/Caquetá river systems in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. These are large Amazonian rivers draining the eastern slopes of the Andes, carrying a mixture of nutrient-rich highland water and Amazonian lowland conditions.

Microhabitat for large Panaque species is consistently associated with substantial submerged wood — log-jams, half-buried tree trunks, root tangles in flooded forest margins, and large driftwood accumulations in river bends. The IUCN assessment notes habitat in large lowland rivers, flooded forests, and blackwater streams with large driftwood and submerged wood, suggesting P. titan occupies a range of microhabitat types within its geographic range, including seasonally inundated forest where wood availability is high.

Water conditions in the Napo and Putumayo systems vary seasonally but generally reflect soft to moderately hard, warm Amazonian conditions. Hobbyist experience aligns with parameters of 77–84 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 as appropriate targets, with low to moderate TDS.

Feeding

Panaque titan is an obligate xylivore — an animal that consumes wood as a dietary staple, not merely as a substrate material. The broad, spatulate teeth of Panaque are specifically adapted for gouging into intact, submerged hardwood: the fish actively excavates channels and pits into wood surfaces, processing far more wood material than surface-rasping species such as Panaqolus.

The nutritional ecology of large Panaque is not fully resolved, but research on the closely related Panaque nigrolineatus suggests that wood-eating loricariids rely on hindgut fermentation by gut bacteria to extract nutrients from hemicellulose and the microbial community (bacteria, fungi, protists) colonising submerged wood. Wood fibre itself is largely indigestible; the processing of large volumes is compensated for by passage through a relatively long gut and the activity of the microbial fermenters.

In the aquarium, multiple large pieces of dense hardwood — bogwood, catappa trunks, or equivalent — must be available at all times. Panaque titan will actively work these pieces, excavating visible grooves and producing large quantities of wood-chip-laden faeces. Supplementary feeding should include sinking xylivore-formulated gel foods (such as Repashy xylivore), spirulina wafers, and blanched vegetables. Protein-rich foods can be offered sparingly. Nutritional deficiency from insufficient wood access is a documented problem in this and related species.

Mating

Relatively little is documented about courtship behaviour specific to P. titan, in part because the species is infrequently bred in captivity and the adults are challenging to condition in all but very large systems. General Panaque courtship behaviour involves males establishing and defending large territory-like areas around preferred cave sites, displaying pectoral spine odontodes and body posture to rival males, and guiding receptive females into spawning cavities.

Given the adult size of P. titan, suitable spawning structures are necessarily large: a hollow log of substantial diameter, a large-bore drainpipe section, or equivalent. Males may defend such a site aggressively against both conspecifics and other large fish. Conditioning adults for breeding requires sustained provision of appropriate food, stable water quality, and sufficient space — requirements that in practice translate to a very large aquarium or indoor pond.

Breeding

Breeding records for Panaque titan in captivity are scarce. The species is listed by PlanetCatfish as having a small number of registered keepers, and confirmed spawning accounts in the public record are limited. What is known derives partly from analogy with the more frequently bred P. nigrolineatus and related species, for which cave spawning with paternal brood care is well established.

Like other large Panaque, P. titan is expected to spawn in a large, enclosed cave, with the male remaining to fan and guard the eggs and early fry. Incubation duration and clutch size are not documented in the available literature for this species specifically; by analogy with related large Panaque, clutch sizes are likely moderate (several dozen eggs) and incubation at typical tropical temperatures lasts roughly a week.

Successful captive breeding of P. titan would require a very large aquarium, well-matured water, a suitably dimensioned spawning site, and extended conditioning of adults on a diet adequate in wood and vegetable matter. The rarity of breeding reports reflects the logistical difficulty of maintaining adult specimens in appropriate conditions rather than any absolute biological barrier.

In the aquarium

Panaque titan is a large-aquarium specialist and should not be acquired without a realistic plan for housing an adult. At up to 15.5 in SL — equivalent to perhaps 17.5–19.5 in total length — this fish requires a tank of at least 80 US gal for a single adult; a larger system of 130–160 US gal or more is preferable for a long-term setup. Very robust filtration is not optional: wood-processing produces an extraordinarily high waste load, with large fragments of part-digested wood fibre passing through the fish continuously. External canister filters of high flow rate, combined with regular siphoning of settled material, are the minimum setup.

Water parameters should target 77–84 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, low to moderate hardness. Strong oxygenation is important given the heavy bioload. Weekly water changes of 30–40% are advisable in systems carrying adult fish.

Driftwood — large, dense pieces — must be present and must be replaced as it is consumed and excavated. Panaque titan will visibly gouge channels and pits into bogwood within weeks; a supply of replacement wood should be maintained. Supplementing with xylivore gel foods and spirulina-based sinking wafers ensures nutritional breadth.

Behaviour toward other fish is generally peaceful given the fish's size; it does not prey on other tank inhabitants. It may defend cave sites against intruders. Tankmates must be large enough not to be intimidated by accidental disturbance from a 15.5 in armoured catfish. Other species of large Panaque should not be housed in the same system unless the tank is extremely large with multiple well-separated cave territories.

Juveniles are the most commonly available form in the trade — the gold-trim fin pattern makes them appealing at 3–6 in. Buyers should be aware that the adult size is roughly three times the purchase size and plan accordingly.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Panaque titan as Least Concern in 2020 (published 2021). The assessment notes a range across the upper Amazon basin — Napo, Putumayo/Caquetá, and Ucayali river systems in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia — with extent of occurrence and area of occupancy sufficient to meet Least Concern thresholds. No major threats have been identified across most of the range; some collection pressure for the ornamental fish trade exists but is not considered sufficient to trigger a higher category at present. Population trend is listed as unknown.

The broader concern for obligate xylivores such as P. titan is habitat quality rather than direct persecution. Large submerged wood — the ecological substrate that defines this species' feeding niche — is a product of old-growth riparian forest. Continued deforestation in the western Amazon, including within the Napo and Putumayo drainages, reduces the input of large trees into river channels and thereby degrades the microhabitat on which wood-eating loricariids depend. This concern is not reflected in the current LC assessment but represents a long-term structural risk for the guild.

Captive breeding of P. titan, while rare, would be a meaningful contribution to reducing collection pressure on wild populations of this slow-growing, large-bodied species.
