Taxonomy & naming
Panaque armbrusteri was formally described by Lujan, Hidalgo and Stewart in 2010 in the journal Copeia (volume 2010, number 4, pages 676–704), from type specimens collected at the Teles Pires River, near the MT-416 ferry crossing (9°27'07"S, 56°30'46"W), Mato Grosso State, Brazil — a tributary of the Tapajós in the lower Amazon drainage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Panaque armbrusteri as the valid name.
The species had circulated in the hobby for years before its formal description; the L-number L027 was assigned in DATZ magazine to Tapajós-origin 'royal plecos' long before the species was scientifically characterised. The companion code LDA077 (from Das Aquarium) refers to the same fish.
The species epithet honours Dr Jonathan William Armbruster (b. 1969), Professor and Curator of Fishes at Auburn University, Alabama, whose phylogenetic revision of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004) laid the groundwork for understanding the suckermouth catfish tree of life. Within Panaque, the species sits in the nominate subgenus Panaque alongside the type species P. nigrolineatus. Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic work places Panaque firmly within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, with xylophagous (wood-eating) dentition as the cardinal synapomorphy of the clade.
Morphology
Panaque armbrusteri is one of the larger members of its genus: maximum recorded length is 17 in total length (approximately 15.5 in SL) and maximum published weight is 1.3 kg (FishBase, ref. 111518). Body form is robust and depressed, heavily armoured in overlapping bony scutes from snout to caudal peduncle. Ground coloration in adults is dark chocolate brown to blackish, overlaid with a reticulate or worm-like pattern of pale lines — cream to ochre in juveniles and large adults from some localities; the intensity and resolution of the pattern vary geographically.
The defining morphological character of the genus is the dentition: both dentaries carry numerous spoon-shaped (spatulate) teeth, conspicuously wider at the cusp than at the base. This is unique among Loricariidae and reflects extreme specialisation for gouging and ingesting woody plant tissue. A second diagnostic feature is the absence of a buccal papilla (the fleshy pad present inside the mouth of many other loricariids).
The dorsal fin originates well forward of mid-body, with a single unbranched spine and typically seven branched rays; the pectoral fins are broad and paddle-like, armed along the spine with stiff interopercular odontodes in breeding males. Odontodes are also present along the sides and top of the head, and elongate cheek bristles (hypertrophied odontodes) develop prominently on breeding males. Females are broader-bodied and lack the elongate cheek bristles; genital papilla shape is the most reliable sexing indicator.
Habitat
In the wild, P. armbrusteri is known from the Tapajós River and its tributaries — principally the Teles Pires (the type-locality river), the Juruena, and the Jamanxim — in the state of Mato Grosso and Pará, Brazil. The Tapajós is a clear-to-blackwater river system draining the southern Brazilian Shield; at Santarém it meets the Amazon as a broad, tannin-tinged 'meeting of waters'. Conductivity in the middle Tapajós is very low (often below 30 µS/cm), pH is weakly acidic to neutral (typically 6.0–7.0), and temperatures are warm year-round (73–81 °F).
Microhabitat is invariably associated with submerged wood: fallen logs, root tangles, and woody debris jams in areas of moderate to swift current, often over rocky substrates. The Teles Pires type locality is a boulder-strewn fast-water reach. PlanetCatfish spotters have photographed this species wedged into narrow crevices between boulders and deep within log piles, consistent with a strongly refugial lifestyle. The species does not tolerate stagnant or low-oxygen conditions. Water clarity tends to be high in the dry season but the rivers carry more suspended sediment during the Amazonian wet season (roughly November–April).
Feeding
Like all members of the genus Panaque, P. armbrusteri is a confirmed xylophage — an animal that feeds substantially on wood. The broad, spatulate teeth are ideal for gouging into intact hardwood grain rather than merely rasping biofilm from the surface, and wild specimens excavate deep furrows in submerged logs. The nutritional yield from cellulose and lignin directly is modest; the fish relies on microbial fermentation in a specialised hindgut to extract energy from plant polysaccharides, supplemented by ingesting the bacteria, algae, fungi, and fine detrital particles that colonise wood surfaces.
In the aquarium, large pieces of durable driftwood are obligatory — not decorative. Multiple wood types (mopani, bogwood, Malaysian driftwood, ironwood) allow the fish to rasp selectively and provide textural variety. Supplementary feeding should be primarily plant-based: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, potato, and peas are all accepted. Occasional protein supplements — sinking catfish pellets, bloodworm — can be offered but should not dominate the diet, as excessive animal protein may stress the specialised hindgut flora. Wood-gnawing activity is constant and normal; expect significant quantities of wood faeces.
Mating
Detailed courtship observations for P. armbrusteri specifically are sparse in the published literature and hobbyist record alike — PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports for this species as of mid-2026. What is known derives from the general Panaque breeding pattern and observations of closely related species (notably P. nigrolineatus).
Males become strongly territorial as they mature, defending preferred cave sites or log crevices and displaying elongated interopercular odontodes to rivals. Two males of comparable size in a confined space will engage in prolonged lateral displays, fin-spreading, and contact sparring using pectoral spines; significant injuries can result if the loser cannot retreat. Receptive females are allowed into the male's territory; courtship involves the male herding or nudging the female toward the chosen spawning cavity. Given the species' large adult size, a substantial cave or hollow log section is required, and successful spawning in captivity almost certainly requires a purpose-built breeding vessel or very large hollow wood piece.
Breeding
No breeding report for P. armbrusteri has been registered on PlanetCatfish, and the species remains unverifiably uncaptive-bred at the time of writing (June 2026). The difficulty is largely practical: adults require very large tanks, produce substantial waste loads, and — given the species' robust build and territorial nature — may damage each other if pairings are not carefully managed.
Based on the breeding biology of P. nigrolineatus and other large Panaque (which have been spawned occasionally in public and private collections), the expected mode is cave spawning with paternal brood care. The male would occupy a hollow log or rock cavity, receive the female briefly for egg deposition, then guard and fan the clutch for an incubation period estimated at 7–10 days at warm temperatures. Clutch sizes in large Panaque are reported as several dozen to over a hundred adhesive, yolk-rich eggs. Fry would initially consume yolk before transitioning to wood and soft vegetables.
Conditioned pairs should be offered temperature cycling (allow the tank to drop 34–36 °F seasonally), periods of high water flow, and abundant cover. The ornamental trade in P. armbrusteri is supplied almost entirely by wild collection from the Tapajós, making captive breeding a conservation priority.
In the aquarium
Panaque armbrusteri is strictly a species for dedicated large-tank keepers. A single sub-adult specimen requires a minimum of 105 US gal to be housed comfortably; a full-grown adult at 15.5 in standard length and 1.3 kg body mass needs 160 US gal or more, with substantial filtration to handle the wood-based waste output. Long, low aquaria with broad floor areas are preferable to tall tanks.
Water chemistry should reflect the blackwater Tapajós origin: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.4, very soft to moderately soft (hardness below 10 dGH), with good oxygenation. The species does not tolerate nitrate accumulation well over time; weekly large partial water changes (30–40%) are advisable. Tannin-rich water from driftwood or botanicals is tolerated and probably beneficial.
Driftwood is non-negotiable — multiple large pieces of durable hardwood should be present and replaced as consumed. Large, smooth boulders or slate caves can serve as refuges and potential spawning sites. Live plants are generally incompatible with this species, which will bulldoze or consume them.
Conspecific males cannot be housed together in any realistically sized domestic aquarium due to territorial aggression. Mixed-sex pairs or a male with multiple females may be attempted in very large tanks with ample visual barriers. Compatible tankmates are limited to robust, fast-moving fish that occupy the mid-water: large characins (Mylossoma, Colossoma), doradid catfishes, and similar Amazonian megafauna from the Tapajós. Delicate community fish will be outcompeted for food and stressed by the vigorous nocturnal activity of a large wood-chewing pleco.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Panaque armbrusteri as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment recognised a moderately broad distribution within the Tapajós basin of Brazil, no quantified evidence of population decline, and no major threat sufficient to qualify it for a threatened category at that time.
However, the Tapajós basin has since become one of the most contested river systems in Amazonia. The Belo Monte hydroelectric complex on the Xingu (an adjacent basin) demonstrated the potential for massive hydropower development in this region; the Tapajós itself has been the focus of proposed large-scale dam projects — notably the São Luiz do Tapajós dam, which, if constructed, would flood extensive areas of the middle Tapajós including key habitat for this species. These projects have been politically contested and variously paused, cancelled, and revived. Artisanal gold mining (garimpo) is also widespread in the upper Tapajós tributaries and causes significant sedimentation and mercury contamination.
The ornamental trade exports moderate numbers of wild-caught P. armbrusteri annually, primarily through the Santarém trade hub. Without established captive breeding, collection pressure on wild populations cannot be displaced. The combination of large body size, slow growth, and site fidelity makes this species likely to be vulnerable to localised overharvesting.
