Pareiorhaphis regani is a small bristle-cheek pleco of southeastern Brazil's Atlantic Forest streams, named in honour of the British ichthyologist C. Tate Regan. A rheophilic biofilm grazer of clear, fast-flowing upland and coastal waters, it is a fish of scientific record rather than the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhaphis regani was described by Louis Giltay in 1936, the species epithet honouring Charles Tate Regan, the influential British ichthyologist and longtime worker on South American fishes at the Natural History Museum in London. The species was originally placed in one of the coastal-stream loricariid genera as understood at the time and was subsequently allocated to Pareiorhaphis through the modern revision of the genus; the combination Pareiorhaphis regani is recognised in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918 endured a long period of nomenclatural confusion with Hemipsilichthys and Pareiorhina before being re-established and substantially expanded by Edson Pereira, Roberto Reis, and colleagues in a series of taxonomic papers during the 2000s and 2010s. Pareiorhaphis is now one of the more species-rich genera of the subfamily Neoplecostominae, comprising many narrow-range endemics of southeastern and eastern Brazilian river systems.

Within Loricariidae, Neoplecostominae is a subfamily of small, often hill-stream-adapted catfishes of the Atlantic Forest and adjacent uplands. Pareiorhaphis is diagnosed within this group by the hypertrophied odontodes — bristle-like structures — that mature males develop along the margins of the head and snout, a feature reflected in the genus name. Distinctions in dentition, plate arrangement, fin-ray counts, and colour pattern separate P. regani from its many congeners.

Morphology

Pareiorhaphis regani is a small loricariid, with adults reaching a size typical of the genus, on the order of 3–4.5 in in standard length. The body is dorsoventrally depressed and streamlined for life in current, with a broad, flattened head and a ventral suckermouth that allows the fish to cling to rocks against flowing water. The dorsum and flanks are armoured with the overlapping bony plates characteristic of the family, while the belly is largely naked.

Colouration is cryptic and subdued — brown to greyish, frequently mottled or marbled with darker markings, sometimes with faint banding on the fins — providing camouflage against the algae-covered stones of its habitat. As with its congeners, the pattern is functional rather than ornamental, consistent with the species' absence from the ornamental trade.

The diagnostic feature of the genus, and the principal cue to identifying mature males, is the development of conspicuous hypertrophied odontodes along the lateral margins of the head and snout, often extending onto the pectoral-fin spines. The full suite of meristic and morphometric characters distinguishing P. regani from related species — counts, body proportions, and details of the odontode and plate arrangement — is documented in the taxonomic literature and is the appropriate basis for precise identification.

Habitat

Pareiorhaphis regani occurs in coastal and upland drainages of southeastern Brazil within the Atlantic Forest biome. It is a rheophilic inhabitant of clear, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers, favouring stretches with moderate to fast current and rocky or gravelly bottoms — the riffles and runs where loricariids of this form cling to stable stones and submerged wood.

The waters of its range are typically soft to moderately mineralised, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and kept relatively cool by flow, shade from riparian forest, and elevation in the forested highlands. Submerged stones coated in periphyton supply both the foraging surface and the structural refuge that the species depends on, while the surrounding forest contributes shade, leaf litter, and the bank stability that keeps water clear and flow stable.

The southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest is among the most fragmented and heavily impacted biomes in the Neotropics. As a rheophilic stream specialist, P. regani is sensitive to habitat degradation: siltation from deforestation and erosion smothers the algae-covered rock surfaces it grazes, and removal of riparian vegetation raises water temperatures and disrupts flow. Its reliance on clear, fast, well-oxygenated water makes it a useful indicator of the health of the catchments it inhabits.

Feeding

Consistent with the feeding ecology of the genus and the broader Neoplecostominae, Pareiorhaphis regani is principally a grazer of aufwuchs — the periphyton biofilm of microalgae (especially diatoms), bacteria, fungi, and trapped fine detritus coating submerged stones in flowing water. Using its ventral suckermouth and rows of fine teeth, the fish rasps this film from rock surfaces, taking in algal and microbial material together with incidental sediment.

Small benthic invertebrates and larvae living within the biofilm and gravel are ingested incidentally, so the diet is best described as predominantly herbivorous-detritivorous with an opportunistic invertebrate component. This places the species in the scraper guild of its stream community, the ecological role shared by most small rheophilic loricariids.

Because P. regani is not an aquarium fish, there is no body of captive feeding observation. Any hypothetical maintenance would require an environment rich in grazeable biofilm — well-lit, current-swept rock surfaces — supplemented with vegetable-based foods, in line with the established requirements of hill-stream loricariids that feed primarily by rasping periphyton from hard substrates.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour specific to Pareiorhaphis regani has not been documented in detail, so the account here is inferred from the well-characterised reproductive biology of the genus and subfamily. In Pareiorhaphis, breeding-condition males develop pronounced hypertrophied odontodes — bristle-like structures along the head margins, snout, and pectoral-fin spines — understood to function in competition between males and in the defence of nesting sites.

Spawning in the genus is associated with sheltered cavities among or beneath stones in flowing water, where a male establishes and defends a nest. The bristle-bearing male is the territory holder, and the seasonal, condition-dependent elaboration of his odontodes is closely tied to reproductive activity. Females approaching spawning condition become heavier-bodied as their eggs mature.

In these rheophilic stream fishes, reproduction is presumed to follow the seasonal hydrological cycle, concentrating in periods of favourable flow. The strong sexual dimorphism in odontode development is the most conspicuous reproductive feature of the genus and is expected to characterise P. regani as it does its congeners.

Breeding

No captive-breeding accounts exist for Pareiorhaphis regani, which has no presence in the aquarium hobby; the following reflects the general reproductive pattern documented for Pareiorhaphis and related Neoplecostominae. These are substrate-nesting loricariids in which the male provides parental care.

In the genus, a male selects and defends a cavity beneath a stone or within a rock crevice in flowing water. Adhesive eggs are deposited within this sheltered nest, and the male guards the clutch and fans the eggs to maintain oxygenation until hatching. Clutch sizes in small Neoplecostominae are modest, ranging from a few dozen to perhaps around a hundred relatively large eggs — the larger-egg, lower-fecundity strategy typical of stream-adapted catfishes that produce well-developed young.

Fry emerge as benthic juveniles that immediately adopt the rock-clinging, biofilm-grazing habits of the adults. The combination of male-guarded nests, larger eggs, and reduced fecundity is well suited to the variable, flow-driven conditions of Atlantic Forest streams. Confirmation of these details specifically for P. regani would require dedicated field or aquarium study, which has not, to current knowledge, been undertaken.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhaphis regani is not part of the ornamental trade and is essentially unknown in aquarium commerce; it is represented in scientific collections and the taxonomic record rather than the hobby. There is therefore no established husbandry tradition for the species, and the guidance below is generic to the genus rather than tested practice for this fish.

A suitable setup would replicate a clear, cool, fast-flowing Atlantic Forest stream: strong current and high oxygenation, a substrate of smooth rocks and gravel, and surfaces well colonised by periphyton. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water held cooler than typical tropical aquaria (roughly 68–77 °F) would best reflect its native conditions, and impeccable water quality with zero ammonia and nitrite is essential, since rheophilic loricariids do not tolerate the oxygen-poor, organically loaded conditions that hardier species endure.

Feeding would centre on grazeable algae- and biofilm-coated surfaces supplemented with vegetable foods. As a small, peaceful, benthic grazer it would be harmless to tankmates but would fare poorly in a warm, slow, crowded community tank. The species is realistically of interest only to specialist hill-stream and biotope aquarists, and on conservation grounds any keeping should never rely on unauthorised wild collection.

Conservation

Pareiorhaphis regani is a southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest endemic, and its formal IUCN Red List status is not confirmed here; many small-range Neoplecostominae remain unassessed or are listed as Data Deficient owing to limited distributional and population information.

The threats facing the species are those facing its habitat. Southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest streams have suffered extensive degradation from deforestation, conversion of land to agriculture and pasture, urban and industrial expansion, and the associated siltation and pollution of watercourses. For a fish dependent on clear, fast, well-oxygenated water over clean rocky substrates, these impacts are acute: increased sediment smothers the periphyton-coated stones it grazes, and the loss of riparian forest raises temperatures and disrupts the flow regime.

Because the genus comprises many local endemics with restricted ranges, conservation of these fishes depends on protecting intact forest catchments rather than on species-specific measures. Maintaining riparian buffers, water quality, and natural flow regimes within its drainages is the most effective safeguard for P. regani and the stream-fish community it belongs to. A definitive conservation assessment for the species would benefit from updated field survey data.
