Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis scutula was described by Pereira, Vieira, and Reis in 2010 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, number 1, pages 33–38). The type locality is Córrego Prainha, a tributary of Rio Piracicaba in the Rio Doce basin, at approximately 19°38'54"S, 42°57'37"W, in the municipality of Nova Era, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pareiorhaphis scutula Pereira, Vieira & Reis, 2010 as the valid name.
The genus Pareiorhaphis belongs to the subfamily Neoplecostominae within Loricariidae — a primarily Southeastern Brazilian clade of rheophilic, small-stream catfishes. Pareiorhaphis species are distributed across Atlantic coastal drainages and the upper portions of large interior basins in southeastern Brazil. Within the genus, P. scutula is distinguished by a unique autapomorphic character: the abdomen is entirely covered by small platelets embedded in the skin and irregularly scattered from the pectoral girdle to the pelvic-fin insertions — a feature not seen in any other Pareiorhaphis.
Morphology
Adults reach up to 3.5 in standard length (SL). The body is elongated, as is typical of Pareiorhaphis and most neoplecostomines, tapering toward a slender caudal peduncle. The defining feature of P. scutula is its abdominal armour: small platelets irregularly scattered across the abdomen from the pectoral girdle to the pelvic-fin insertions, creating a uniquely textured ventral surface absent in congeners.
Additional meristic characters recorded in the original description include 51–71 premaxillary teeth, 24–28 lateral plates in the median series, and a snout length of 62.1–70.0% of head length. The fins carry pale yellow and light brown spots — markings noted from preserved specimens. Meristic and morphometric details place P. scutula firmly within Pareiorhaphis but clearly separated from other species in the genus by the abdominal platelet autapomorphy.
Habitat
Pareiorhaphis scutula inhabits shallow, rocky, fast-flowing creeks within the upper Rio Doce basin of Minas Gerais. At collection sites the water depth was typically 1–2 ft, with swift current over a substrate of rocks and sand. The fish were collected syntopically with other small rheophilic taxa including Trichomycterus (pencil catfishes), Geophagus brasiliensis, Neoplecostomus species, and Astyanax (tetras) — a community typical of well-oxygenated piedmont streams in this region of Minas Gerais.
The upper Rio Doce drainage in which this species is found is characterised by the crystalline, swift headwater streams descending from the Espinhaço range and adjacent upland areas. These are clear-water environments with high oxygen content — conditions that loricariids in this clade require for sustained activity and respiration.
Feeding
Neoplecostomines in general are aufwuchs and biofilm scrapers, rasping algae, diatoms, and associated organic material from rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. P. scutula almost certainly follows this feeding mode, given its rheophilic habitat and the suckermouth morphology shared across Loricariidae. No specific stomach-content analyses for this species have been published. In the absence of captive-husbandry data for this species, the feeding ecology can be inferred from its closest relatives and habitat type: a grazer of periphyton on smooth rock faces in high-flow microhabitats.
Mating
No specific observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Pareiorhaphis scutula are available in the published literature or from documented aquarium records. The species has not been established in the hobby to a degree that has generated captive-breeding reports.
Breeding
Reproductive biology of P. scutula is undescribed. In the broader loricariid context, most small neoplecostomines are believed to be substrate spawners depositing adhesive eggs on rock surfaces in swift water, with some degree of guarding behaviour by one or both parents — but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically. No aquarium breeding reports are known.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis scutula is not known to be established in the ornamental fish trade, and no captive-husbandry documentation is available. The species is a specialist of fast, clear, rocky streams in a restricted endemic range in Minas Gerais — conditions that would require careful replication in a dedicated rheophilic setup. Should specimens become available, the baseline requirements for neoplecostomines from this region would apply: high water oxygen levels, strong directed flow, smooth and rocky substrate, cool to moderate temperatures consistent with piedmont stream conditions in southeastern Brazil, and low organic loading. Information sufficient to give specific aquarium parameters for this species does not currently exist in the published or hobbyist literature.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhaphis scutula as Least Concern in 2022. The species is endemic to the upper Rio Doce basin, a drainage that has experienced significant anthropogenic pressure including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and altered hydrology in the broader catchment. However, at the time of the IUCN assessment, the species was not considered to face population decline sufficient to place it in a threatened category.
The Rio Doce basin as a whole suffered a catastrophic environmental disaster in November 2015, when the Fundão tailings dam (iron ore mine) collapsed near Mariana, Minas Gerais, releasing approximately 43 million cubic metres of iron ore tailings into the drainage. The plume reached the Atlantic coast and caused extensive documented mortality of aquatic species across hundreds of kilometres of river. The upper-basin headwater streams where P. scutula was collected — specifically the Rio Piracicaba tributary system — are somewhat upstream of the primary impact zone, but the long-term effects on stream biota across the Doce system continue to be monitored by Brazilian research institutions.
