A small, strongly rheophilic catfish of Atlantic Forest streams in southern Brazil, Pareiorhaphis steindachneri clings to boulder-strewn torrent beds in the Itapocu, Cubatão, and Itajaí-Açu drainages — cool, clear, fast-flowing coastal rivers almost nobody outside Brazilian ichthyology has heard of. It barely scratches 5.5 in and has never established itself in the ornamental trade, but the genus offers a striking example of loricariid sexual dimorphism: fully mature males sprout hypertrophied odontodes along the head margins, one of the more dramatic facial modifications in the family.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhaphis steindachneri was originally described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1918 as Hemipsilichthys steindachneri, from material collected in the Rio Itapocu drainage of Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The same paper introduced a second name, Hemipsilichthys luderwaldti Miranda Ribeiro, 1918, which is now treated as a junior synonym. A further combination, Pseudancistrus luderwaldti (Miranda Ribeiro, 1918), was applied at various points and is likewise synonymised. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, spid 5350) recognises the valid combination Pareiorhaphis steindachneri under the authorship (Miranda Ribeiro, 1918), with the parenthetical authorship reflecting the genus transfer from Hemipsilichthys.

The genus Pareiorhaphis was revised in detail by Pereira and Reis (2002; Ref. 42856), a study that substantially clarified species limits and morphological characters across the group. FishBase currently assigns Pareiorhaphis to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae; WaterAquaria follows an alternative phylogenetic placement and lists the genus under Neoplecostominae per site convention — readers consulting FishBase should note this discrepancy. No L-number has been assigned to this species, consistent with its complete absence from the commercial aquarium trade.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum of approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL), which FishBase records from male or unsexed specimens (Ref. 36817). The body follows the typical loricariid plan: flattened ventrally, armoured with bony scute plates, and equipped with a ventrally positioned suctorial mouth for clinging to hard substrates in current.

Morphometric data from the Pereira and Reis (2002) revision provide several diagnostic ratios: preadipose azygous plates number 1–2; the adipose fin is present; the pectoral spine is curved and relatively short; cleithral width falls between 27.9 and 33.7 percent SL; and head length spans 30.2–36.4 percent SL. These proportions give the fish a moderately broad, slightly flattened head profile well-suited to pressed-flat posture on rock surfaces.

The most striking morphological feature is the sexual dimorphism of odontodes. Fully mature males develop hypertrophied odontodes along the margins of the head — longer than the mandibular ramus length in maximally developed individuals, though shorter than snout length. This kind of hypertrophied head ornamentation is characteristic of the genus Pareiorhaphis and serves as a reliable field character for separating adult males from females.

Habitat

Pareiorhaphis steindachneri is restricted to Atlantic coastal drainages of southern Brazil, specifically the Itapocu, Cubatão, and Itajaí-Açu river basins in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. The type locality is Rio Itapocu, Santa Catarina. These are compact, fast-flowing rivers descending steeply from the Serra do Mar and Serra Geral escarpments to the coast — a very different hydrological setting from the broad, seasonally flooded lowland rivers that most hobbyist-familiar loricariids inhabit.

The IUCN assessment describes the microhabitat as shallow fast-flowing streams with substrates of boulders, blocks, and pebbles. The species requires cold, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water and preserved riparian vegetation. This combination of cold water, strong current, and rocky substrate places it firmly in the rheophilic guild of loricariids — fish adapted to grip hard surfaces against forceful flow rather than to cruise open sand or forage in still backwaters.

The species occurs within or adjacent to several protected areas, including Parque Nacional da Serra do Itajaí, Parque Nacional Guaricana, Parque Nacional Saint-Hilaire/Lange, APA Serra Dona Francisca, APA Estadual de Guaratuba, APA Campos do Quiriri, and Parque Natural Municipal das Grutas de Botuverá. The IUCN assessment characterises local populations as frequent and abundant where the species occurs.

Feeding

No targeted dietary studies specific to Pareiorhaphis steindachneri appear to be available in the literature. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.0 ±0.0, which is at the very base of the consumer scale and consistent with a diet dominated by periphyton, epilithic algae, and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces — the standard foraging mode for rheophilic, hard-substrate loricariids in fast-flowing Atlantic Forest streams.

The suctorial mouth and scraping dentition typical of Pareiorhaphis are morphologically suited to rasping material from boulder and cobble surfaces in current. In the cold, clear streams this species inhabits, biofilm and diatom communities on rock surfaces are typically the dominant food resource available to benthic catfishes. Incidental organic detritus and small invertebrates swept into the grazing path are likely consumed opportunistically.

Mating

No detailed behavioural observations of courtship in Pareiorhaphis steindachneri have been published, and the species has not been bred in captivity to the knowledge available in the literature. The strongly developed head odontodes in mature males almost certainly function in male-male competition, as has been documented or inferred in related genera of Neoplecostominae and Hypoptopomatinae. Males with more elaborate odontodes may gain preferential access to spawning sites or females.

The degree of dimorphism — with males producing odontodes that exceed the mandibular ramus in length — suggests that intrasexual competition is an important reproductive force in this genus. Whether females exercise active mate choice based on odontode expression is unknown for this species.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Pareiorhaphis steindachneri has not been documented in the scientific literature or aquarium hobby sources. By analogy with other loricariids of similar body plan and habitat, the species is presumed to be an egg-layer that deposits adhesive eggs in a sheltered cavity or under a flat rock, with some degree of parental guarding of the clutch — but this inference has not been confirmed for this species specifically.

The cold, fast-flowing stream habitat of the type locality likely imposes a seasonal reproductive regime tied to water temperature and flow cycles, but no phenological data are available.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhaphis steindachneri does not appear in the ornamental fish trade. No established husbandry literature exists for the species, and the ecological requirements inferred from its natural habitat — cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams with rocky substrates in Atlantic Forest drainages — would present a significant challenge to replicate in a standard home aquarium setup.

Any keeper who obtained specimens would need to prioritise strong water movement, very high dissolved oxygen levels, cool temperatures (the cold upland streams of the Serra do Mar rarely warm to the high 20s), and a rocky aquascape. The fish's small size (under 6 in) is in its favour from a tank-size perspective, but the environmental demands of a true cold-water, high-flow rheophile place it well outside the comfort zone of typical tropical aquarium conditions. Honest assessment: this species belongs in specialist hands with appropriate cold-water flow-through systems, if it could be obtained at all.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhaphis steindachneri as Least Concern in November 2018 (published 2022), a status assigned by assessors at the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The justification rests on a moderately wide distribution across multiple river basins, local populations described as frequent and abundant, and representation within several formally protected areas across its range in Paraná and Santa Catarina.

Potential threats noted by the assessment include mining, logging, and agrochemical pollution, but these were not considered significant enough to affect overall population viability at the time of assessment. The species' dependence on cold, fast-flowing streams with intact riparian vegetation makes it inherently sensitive to deforestation, which degrades water temperature buffering, sedimentation, and oxygen dynamics in headwater streams. Continued monitoring of the impacts of upland deforestation and agrochemical runoff in the Serra do Mar drainages is identified as a research need.
