Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is a small, fast-water loricariid endemic to the upland streams of southern Brazil's Atlantic Forest — a rheophile adapted to the cool, clear, oxygen-charged torrents of the Rio Canoas drainage. Rarely encountered in the hobby and assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, it represents the kind of hyper-localised, poorly-surveyed neoplecostomine whose conservation status may be more precarious than current data reveal.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis was originally described by Pereira and Reis in 1992 as a new species of the genus Pareiorhaphis (Miranda Ribeiro, 1918). The type locality is the Rio Canoas, a tributary of the upper Rio Pelotas within the upper Rio Uruguay drainage, in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis (Pereira & Reis, 1992).

The genus Pareiorhaphis belongs to the subfamily Neoplecostominae — a group of largely small, rheophilic loricariids distributed primarily through the southeastern and southern Atlantic Forest drainages of Brazil. The genus currently comprises more than twenty species, many of which have restricted, drainage-specific ranges. Taxonomy within Pareiorhaphis has been refined through revisions by Bockmann and Miquelarena (2008) and subsequent work by Reis and colleagues.

The species epithet directly describes one of the taxon's key diagnostic characters: 'vestigipinnis' is formed from the Latin vestigium (remnant, trace) and pinna (fin), referring to the vestigial — greatly reduced — adipose fin that distinguishes this species and provides a ready field character within the genus.

Morphology

Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is a small loricariid, reaching approximately 4 in standard length (SL). The body form is typical of neoplecostomines adapted to fast-water environments: depressed, robust across the pectoral-fin base, tapering posteriorly, and covered in bony scutes. The ventral surface is flattened to maximise contact with rocky substrates in current.

The most diagnostically important morphological feature is the vestigial adipose fin — greatly reduced in size compared with most loricariids, reflecting either secondary reduction or retention of a plesiomorphic state. This character, named in the species epithet, is a reliable identification marker within Pareiorhaphis.

Coloration in life is typical of a cryptic highland rheophile: brown to grey-brown dorsally, with darker mottling that provides camouflage against the cobble and boulder substrates of upland streams. The belly is paler.

Males develop odontodes on the snout — small, stiff bristles that become more pronounced in breeding condition — a feature shared with other members of the genus and widely found among male loricariids as a secondary sex character.

Habitat

Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is known from the Rio Canoas in the upper Rio Uruguay system, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This is a classic Atlantic Forest upland stream environment: the water is cold, clear, fast-flowing, and well-oxygenated, running over cobble, boulder, and bedrock substrates at altitude. The Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil supports an exceptionally high level of aquatic endemism, and many loricariid species in this region have ranges restricted to single river systems or sub-basins.

The subtropical latitude and upland elevation produce water temperatures significantly cooler than Amazonian habitats: typical conditions are approximately 61–72 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water with high dissolved oxygen. The species is presumably a rheophile — strongly adapted to life in fast current — and would be expected to occupy areas of riffle and rapid rather than still or slow-moving water.

The extent of the species' range beyond the type locality is inadequately documented, which is reflected directly in its IUCN Data Deficient assessment.

Feeding

As a neoplecostomine from fast-flowing, rocky streams, Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is a grazer of epilithic algae and periphyton — the thin films of diatoms, cyanobacteria, green algae, and associated organic matter that coat submerged rocks and cobbles in upland rivers. The ventral mouth with its oral disc and fine teeth is well adapted to scraping these films from hard, smooth surfaces in fast current.

Detailed feeding data for this species specifically are not published, but the feeding ecology of the genus and subfamily is well characterised in the broader loricariid literature. In captivity, species of comparable ecology from Neoplecostominae and allied subfamilies accept algae wafers, spirulina foods, and blanched vegetables offered on smooth rock or glass surfaces. High water flow at feeding sites appears to stimulate natural feeding behaviour.

Mating

Reproductive biology of Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis has not been documented in published studies. Based on the broader patterns within Pareiorhaphis and Neoplecostominae, males are expected to become territorial during the breeding season, using the rostral odontodes — which develop most prominently in breeding condition — in male–male interactions. The cooler, seasonal climate of the southern Brazilian highlands likely imposes a natural reproductive seasonality absent from tropical loricariid habitats, with spawning activity probably concentrated in the warmer months.

Given the species' rarity in captivity, aquarium breeding has not been reported in accessible hobbyist literature. Husbandry experience with comparable highland neoplecostomines suggests that cool, oxygen-rich, high-flow conditions are prerequisites for conditioning.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis has been documented in published sources. The breeding mode is not confirmed for this species specifically. By analogy with related Neoplecostominae from comparable Atlantic Forest stream habitats, the species is likely a rock-surface or crevice spawner with paternal guarding of eggs, but this remains unverified.

The restricted known range and rarity in trade mean that this species has received essentially no husbandry attention in the hobby literature. Any breeding observations would represent a meaningful contribution to knowledge of the species.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its restricted distribution in a single Brazilian river system, combined with the lack of any L-number designation and absence from commercial collection routes, means it is not available through normal trade channels. Hobbyists in Brazil may occasionally encounter it in the wild or through regional specialist networks, but it cannot be considered an obtainable aquarium fish.

For the purposes of understanding what husbandry would require: the species' habitat demands cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over rocky substrate — conditions appropriate to a hill-stream or torrent-tank setup. Temperature should not exceed 72 °F; sustained warmer conditions would likely cause chronic stress. pH 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderate hardness suit the Atlantic Forest drainage of origin. High filtration turnover (10× tank volume per hour or more) and a powerhead to simulate current would be important. Smooth river cobble and slate as substrate and resting surfaces are appropriate, along with some driftwood. Feeding would rely on established epilithic algae growth supplemented with algae wafers placed in the current.

Conservation

Pareiorhaphis vestigipinnis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN (2018 assessment). The DD listing reflects the very limited published population data and the restricted known range — a single river in Santa Catarina state — rather than an absence of threats. It is not equivalent to Least Concern: Data Deficient indicates that the assessors lacked sufficient information to determine threat status, not that the species is necessarily secure.

The Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil is one of the most threatened biomes on Earth, with less than 12% of original forest cover remaining. The upland streams within it face ongoing threats from deforestation of riparian zones — which raises water temperature, increases sedimentation, and removes the organic inputs that sustain stream productivity — as well as from agriculture, eucalyptus plantation, and small-scale hydroelectric development. For an endemic restricted to a single sub-basin, any significant degradation of the Rio Canoas catchment could affect the entire known range of the species. Clarifying the actual range extent and population size of P. vestigipinnis is a conservation research priority.
