First described in 1911 from the Serra da Mantiqueira foothills and still clinging to the same highland streams more than a century later, Pareiorhina rudolphi is a stocky little cascudinho of the upper and middle Paraíba do Sul basin in southeastern Brazil. Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, it faces the slow attrition of urbanisation and deforestation across a watershed that cradles the megacity corridor of São Paulo–Rio de Janeiro — a reminder that even a small, unremarkable fish can sit at the intersection of history, geology, and a rapidly changing landscape.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhina rudolphi was originally described by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1911 as Rhinelepis rudolphi in the Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz. The genus Pareiorhina was erected by Gosline (1947) with R. rudolphi as its type species, and the new combination Pareiorhina rudolphi was established at that time (Gosline 1947: 104). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) confirms Pareiorhina rudolphi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1911) as the valid name and places the genus in Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae.

Note: a number of molecular phylogenetic studies (Chiachio et al. 2008; Roxo et al. 2012) place Pareiorhina within the subfamily Neoplecostominae rather than Hypoptopomatinae, and the ZooKeys paper describing P. hyptiorhachis (Silva et al. 2013) follows this classification. However, the Catalog of Fishes (CoF), which is authoritative for valid names, currently lists Pareiorhina under Hypoptopomatinae. The subfamilial debate reflects genuine uncertainty in Loricariidae phylogenetics that has not yet been definitively resolved.

The genus currently comprises five or six described species distributed across three hydrographic basins in southeastern Brazil: P. rudolphi and P. brachyrhyncha in the Paraíba do Sul basin; P. carrancas in the upper Paraná basin; P. cepta in the São Francisco basin; and P. hyptiorhachis also from the Paraíba do Sul system. The type species, P. rudolphi, is the most widespread member and carries the genus's nomenclatural history.

Morphology

Pareiorhina rudolphi reaches up to approximately 2 in standard length (SL) per FishBase, making it slightly larger than many congeners in the Hypoptopomatinae and notably larger than the co-occurring P. brachyrhyncha. The body is dorsoventrally compressed and broad across the head and pectoral girdle, typical of benthic loricariids that live pressed against rock surfaces in fast current. The anterior profile of the head is elliptical in dorsal view — a feature that distinguishes it from the round-snouted P. hyptiorhachis (Silva et al. 2013).

The abdomen is entirely naked (unplated), as in other Pareiorhina. Teeth are unicuspid — a single-cusped form suited to rasping rather than gouging — and the premaxillary and dentary tooth counts documented in congeners are in the range of 17–40. The dorsal surface of the body posterior to the dorsal fin is flattened, without a postdorsal ridge (distinguishing P. rudolphi from P. carrancas and P. hyptiorhachis). Adipose fin is absent. Ventral plates cover the mid-ventral line behind the anal-fin base.

Colouration in live specimens is typically yellowish-brown with darker mottling; preserved specimens show the pale ground colour of the underside and variable dorsal pigment. Suborbital depth in P. rudolphi is proportionally smaller than in P. hyptiorhachis (24.5–31.8% of head length vs. 35.0–40.5% in the latter), providing a measurable morphometric distinction. Sexual dimorphism has been documented in at least some congeners (males with fewer teeth and a genital papilla); formal description for P. rudolphi is sparse.

Habitat

Pareiorhina rudolphi inhabits fast-flowing, clear streams in the upper and middle Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, with a distribution spanning São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro states (IUCN 2022). More specifically, the IUCN assessment and supporting studies localise the species to mountain streams on the eastern slope of the Serra da Mantiqueira — high-relief tributaries in the Ribeirão Grande microbasin and adjacent sub-basins.

The habitat is characterised by torrential or rapid-flowing water over substrates of sand, pebbles, and boulders of various sizes, with riparian gallery forest providing shade, leaf litter, and structural complexity (Braga & Andrade 2005). Water temperatures at these altitudes typically range from about 70 °F to 77 °F over the year (FishBase ref. 13614). The fish are scrapers that cling to rocky substrates using their ventral sucking disc, exploiting the periphyton communities that develop on stones in well-lit sections of clear mountain streams.

The IUCN assessment reports that the species has an estimated extent of occurrence of approximately 9,545 mi², all within the upper and middle Paraíba do Sul system. The range is restricted to the eastern Serra da Mantiqueira drainages, and the species is described as uncommon ('pouco abundante') within that area.

Feeding

The IUCN Red List assessment explicitly identifies P. rudolphi as herbivorous, feeding mainly on periphyton — the epilithic community of benthic autotrophs (primarily microalgae and associated biofilm) that grows on hard substrates in clear streams. This is consistent with its unicuspid teeth, suited for scraping rather than biting, and with the feeding mode of the Hypoptopomatinae generally.

Studies on analogous cascudinhos and other small loricariids in Atlantic Forest streams of southeastern Brazil confirm that diatoms and filamentous green algae dominate gut contents, along with fine detritus and incidentally ingested sand grains. The presence of fast current at the species' habitat ensures that rock surfaces are kept clear of coarse sediment, maintaining the productivity of the periphyton layer that the fish depend on.

In an aquarium context, the dietary requirements would mirror those of Otocinclus and similar small algae-grazing loricariids: natural algae growth on rock and glass, spirulina-based wafers, blanched courgette or cucumber, and other soft vegetable matter. The species has no xylophagous (wood-eating) specialisation.

Mating

Specific mating behaviour in Pareiorhina rudolphi has not been described in the published literature. The IUCN assessment (based on Braga & Andrade 2005) provides the best available summary of reproductive biology, indicating a spawning season between October and February, with the cycle concluding by April — corresponding to the austral spring through late summer at the Serra da Mantiqueira elevations.

This seasonality suggests that increasing temperature and day length in the austral spring, possibly combined with elevated stream flow from seasonal rains, serve as proximate triggers for reproductive readiness. In related small loricariids, males typically become more active and territorial in the weeks preceding spawning, displaying or patrolling near suitable oviposition sites.

The comparative material cited in Silva et al. (2013) includes P. rudolphi specimens collected from the Ribeirão Fernandes catchment in the municipality of Piquete, SP (Rio Paraíba do Sul basin), confirming the species' presence in moderate-gradient mountain streams where rocky substrate and shelter sites are available. Whether the species defends territories or forms aggregations around spawning sites is unknown.

Breeding

Braga & Andrade (2005), in their study of the fish fauna of the Ribeirão Grande microbasin in the Serra da Mantiqueira Oriental, document that Pareiorhina rudolphi spawns between October and February, with the reproductive cycle completed by April. This is the primary published breeding record for the species, and it aligns with the austral warm-season pattern seen in other southeastern-Brazilian Hypoptopomatinae.

Clutch size, egg size, and incubation period have not been formally described. Given the species' body size (up to ~2 in SL) and the pattern of related genera, eggs are presumed adhesive and deposited on a hard substrate — rock surface, wood undersurface, or a sheltered crevice. Parental guarding behaviour (likely by the male, based on loricariid norms) is assumed but undocumented for P. rudolphi specifically.

No captive breeding records exist for this species. The fish are not kept in the ornamental hobby and are not held in ex-situ conservation programmes. Any future captive maintenance would likely require replicating the cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing conditions of the Serra da Mantiqueira streams, including temperature cycling to simulate seasonality and trigger spawning.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhina rudolphi is not present in the ornamental fish trade and has never been assigned an L-number or widely used common name in hobbyist circles. Its absence from the market reflects the combination of restricted range, non-commercial collecting location, modest size, and cryptic colouration that characterises many small loricariids endemic to southeastern-Brazilian Atlantic Forest streams.

For a dedicated specialist, the care requirements would demand close attention to water quality. The species' Serra da Mantiqueira habitat — fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated highland streams — must be approximated: temperature in the range of 64–75 °F (with seasonal cooling if breeding is intended), strong filtration providing good oxygen and moderate current, very low ammonia and nitrite, and a rocky substrate with biofilm-covered surfaces. Warmer, stagnant conditions would be stressful and likely fatal over time.

Diet would be herbivorous/algivorous: natural periphyton growth, spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables. The species is harmless to plants and other fish. Its relatively larger body (up to ~2 in) compared to other Hypoptopomatinae means it could be maintained in a somewhat larger nano-tank (15–20 US gal). No captive maintenance protocols have been published and no breeding reports exist.

Conservation

Pareiorhina rudolphi is assessed as Near Threatened (NT, B1b(iii)) on the IUCN Red List (ICMBio, assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022; e.T186341A1811586). The NT designation is based on a restricted extent of occurrence (approximately 9,545 mi²) and evidence of continuing decline in habitat quality due to urbanisation, deforestation, and pollution, though the population is not considered severely fragmented and the number of distinct locations cannot be assessed.

The species has not been recorded at two previously known localities, suggesting local disappearance at some sites. The primary threats identified are habitat destruction (urban and residential expansion), deforestation and associated sedimentation, and agricultural and domestic wastewater pollution (IUCN 2022). The Paraíba do Sul basin corridor runs through one of South America's most heavily populated and industrialised regions, linking the metropolitan areas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; its tributary streams are under diffuse pressure from the expanding urban fringe.

No conservation programme or protected-area coverage specifically for P. rudolphi has been documented. The species is not known to occur in any formally designated conservation unit (Unidade de Conservação). Given the Near Threatened status and the ongoing habitat pressure, targeted survey work to establish current population distribution and trend, along with protection or restoration of riparian forest at key localities, would constitute a proportionate response.
