Taxonomy & naming
Parotocinclus cristatus was described by Julio César Garavello in 1977, in his landmark systematic revision of the genus — Arquivos de Zoologia de São Paulo 28(2): 1–37 — the same paper that formally transferred several species, including Parotocinclus doceanus, from older genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — species ID 5310) recognises Garavello, 1977 as the sole authority, and the name requires no parentheses because the species was described directly into Parotocinclus. The type locality is given as coastal rivers near Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil.
Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 is placed within subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, the dwarf suckermouth catfishes, a well-supported clade of miniaturised loricariids distributed across lowland tropical South America. The genus contains several dozen valid species, a high proportion of which are narrow endemics in the Atlantic coastal drainages of northeastern and eastern Brazil — a biogeographic pattern reflecting the isolation and antiquity of these small independent river basins draining the Serra do Mar and Serra Geral escarpments.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 1.5 in total length (TL), making P. cristatus one of the smallest members of an already diminutive genus. The body follows the characteristic Hypoptopomatinae plan: dorsoventrally flattened, fully armoured in interlocking bony scutes, with a suctorial ventral mouth and a narrow, keeled caudal peduncle. The head is broad relative to body width, with dorsally placed eyes giving the fish some degree of visual awareness above the body plane while pressed to substrate.
The diagnostic character of this species is the well-developed tuft of denticles on the supraoccipital bone — the bony crest of the skull roof visible as a raised prominence between the eyes — from which the specific epithet derives. This crest and associated denticle patch is more pronounced in P. cristatus than in several of its congeners and was the primary morphological feature used by Garavello to diagnose the species in 1977.
Colouration is typically brown above with variable pale mottling; the underside is paler. As in other Parotocinclus, breeding males develop interopercular odontodes, and ripe females are noticeably more robust-bodied in dorsal view.
Habitat
Parotocinclus cristatus is endemic to small coastal rivers near Ilhéus, in the southern Bahia state of Brazil (approximately 14.8°S, 39.0°W). These are short, independent Atlantic-draining streams flowing from the escarpment of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) biome to the ocean — geographically isolated from one another and from the larger inland drainages of the São Francisco and Paraná systems. FishBase records a temperature range of 72–77 °F for this species, consistent with the warm but not extreme conditions typical of Atlantic Bahia coastal streams.
Microhabitat is presumed to consist of rocky riffles, gravel runs, and submerged hard surfaces where epilithic biofilm is productive. The Atlantic Forest coast of Bahia receives substantial rainfall, and these coastal streams tend to be clear and well-oxygenated in their rocky reaches. Like other Parotocinclus and indeed many loricariids, the species is likely to exploit the shelter of leaf litter and submerged wood in addition to rock surfaces.
Feeding
Parotocinclus cristatus is a benthic micro-grazer, feeding primarily by rasping the thin layer of epilithic biofilm and periphyton from hard substrates — rock faces, gravel, submerged wood, and leaf surfaces — using its fine, multicusped teeth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.4, consistent with a diet dominated by algae, diatoms, and associated fine organic detritus rather than animal prey.
This feeding guild — sometimes called aufwuchs grazing — is shared by most Hypoptopomatinae. The fish presses its suctorial mouth firmly to the substrate and rasps with small, rapid strokes, ingesting a mixture of algal cells, bacterial films, fungi, fine detrital particles, and the invertebrates incidentally captured within the biofilm matrix. In aquaria, related species accept algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables, and these would represent appropriate supplementary foods for P. cristatus.
Mating
No published courtship observations exist for Parotocinclus cristatus specifically. General Hypoptopomatinae reproductive biology suggests males establish and defend small territories centred on suitable spawning sites, using the interopercular odontodes — which are more developed in males — in lateral displays and occasional contact competition with rivals. Ripe females, identifiable by their notably broader body profile in dorsal view, are courted and guided to the spawning site.
The seasonal pattern of the Atlantic Bahia coastal drainages — with a pronounced wet season driven by northeast trade-wind moisture and seasonal frontal systems — likely regulates reproductive timing in this species as it does in other seasonally variable Atlantic drainage loricariids.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Parotocinclus cristatus are available in the published or hobbyist literature consulted. The species is not established in the ornamental trade and is effectively unknown outside of systematic ichthyology.
Based on reproductive data from congeners and the wider Hypoptopomatinae, spawning is expected to involve adhesive eggs deposited on hard substrates — rock undersides, slate, smooth driftwood — with paternal or biparental guarding behaviour during incubation. Clutch sizes in micro-loricariids of this size class are typically small, consistent with the body dimensions. Incubation times and fry development data are unrecorded for this species.
In the aquarium
Parotocinclus cristatus is not available through the ornamental trade. As a narrow endemic of a restricted coastal Bahia drainage, wild collection is impractical at any commercial scale, and no captive breeding programme appears to exist. The following reflects the known husbandry requirements of similar Hypoptopomatinae species.
The small adult size (1.5 in TL) makes the species theoretically compatible with nano and small community aquaria of 10–20 US gal, provided water quality is exemplary. Good filtration with gentle to moderate flow, soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures in the range of 72–77 °F — matching the FishBase-recorded natural range — would be appropriate. Hard substrate such as smooth river cobble and flat slate, combined with pieces of driftwood, provides both grazing surface and shelter. Regular partial water changes maintaining low nitrate levels are important for small-bodied catfishes generally.
Intraspecific tolerance is expected to be moderate; groups of the same or related species can coexist if grazing territory is sufficient. Tankmates should be small, non-aggressive species — small characids, dwarf rasboras, or small Corydoras.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus cristatus as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment notes the species' endemic range in coastal rivers near Ilhéus, Bahia — one of the most biodiverse and simultaneously threatened regions of Atlantic Brazil. The Mata Atlântica coastal forests of Bahia, which mediate the hydrology, sediment dynamics, and water quality of these small coastal drainages, have been extensively cleared for cattle ranching, cacao cultivation, and urban expansion over the past century, reducing original forest cover to a fraction of its historical extent.
Small, geographically isolated coastal drainage endemics such as P. cristatus are inherently vulnerable to localised disturbance events — single pollution incidents, hydrological alteration, or habitat modification within a single stream system can affect the entire known range. The LC assessment reflects the absence of documented population data suggesting severe decline rather than confirmed resilience; the actual population trajectory of this species in degraded coastal Bahian streams is poorly known.
